Since Aurelia was closest, she quickly stepped in to de-escalate the situation, hoping to prevent a brawl. But Lara was still furious that Aurelia hadn't backed her up. Accustomed to bossing her younger cousins around, she didn't view Aurelia as a threat at all and ruthlessly shoved her out of the way.
The shove was forceful. Caught completely off guard, Aurelia tumbled backward off the garden steps.
Alaric and the boys' expressions darkened instantly. Cyril finally showed a flicker of presence, rushing down the steps in feigned panic to help Aurelia up.
Thankfully, there were only two steps. Aurelia wasn't seriously hurt, just suffering some scraped knees and elbows.
However, the commotion outside had already alerted the adults inside. Caspian emerged, followed closely by the members of the Ravenshire family.
"What is going on here?"
Realizing she was in deep trouble, Lara burst into tears and threw herself at Caspian, clinging to his arm. "Grandpa, Vivienne is bullying me!"
Singling Vivienne out was a calculated move, exploiting the fact that she supposedly had no real backing.
Benedict's face was stormy. He marched straight down the steps to check on Aurelia, his tone venomous. "If she was bullying you, why did you push Aurelia?"
Lara had been terrified of her Uncle Benedict since childhood. She whimpered a weak defense. "I didn't mean to. I was just..."
She couldn't exactly confess that she had been trying to assault Vivienne, so she stumbled over her words, stammering incoherently.
Evelyn couldn't stand it anymore. She stepped forward to shield her daughter. "Benedict, why are you being so aggressive? Lara has always been incredibly sweet to her cousins. Why would she ever push Aurelia? There has to be a misunderstanding."
Turning to Aurelia with a warm, maternal smile, she coaxed, "Aurelia, why don't you tell us what really happened?"
