Evelyn's embarrassment was palpable, but she couldn't refuse the offer. She could only lower her head and accept.
"Well, well, looks like everyone's here."
As she spoke, Talia entered the parlor, walking on stiletto heels covered in crystals, with Bianca in tow.
"Bianca, come here and let your uncle see you," Benedict said, smiling and waving at Bianca. Bianca glanced at her mother, and only after Talia nodded did she run over with a smile. "Uncle Lucian, Uncle Benedict."
Talia's gaze swept toward the second branch of the family, her tone reproachful. "How many times have I told you? Still so ill-mannered. Your uncle and aunt are right there, why didn't you greet them?"
"Oh." Bianca turned and gave a slight curtsy. "Uncle Leander, Aunt Evelyn."
Evelyn pretended not to notice the girl's awkwardness and nodded with a smile. "Good girl." Her gaze then swept over Bianca with a meaningful look.
It was a family meeting today, so Talia had made her that heavy, smeared smokey eye makeup. But her hair, streaked with pink and green, hadn't been fixed yet, giving her a rebellious look.
Bianca wasn't stupid. Evelyn's stare made her uncomfortable, as if she wasn't being shown any respect. Her face fell, and she stood coldly to the side.
Talia saw everything but said nothing this time, simply patting her back gently to tell her to stand properly.
When Vivienne entered the hall with Serena, all the Ravenshires had arrived.
Serena was visibly out of her element. "Hello, everyone," she said with an awkward stiffness.
The Ravenshires were all born with silver spoons in their mouths, accustomed to a life of luxury. To them, Vivienne and Serena were nothing more than strays the old man had taken in. They gave them a cursory glance and looked away.
This dismissal made Serena even more uncomfortable. She lowered her head and led Vivienne and Isabella to a seat at the very edge of the room.
"What do you want," she snapped, her tone dripping with hostility.
Vivienne paid it no mind and waved her closer. Bianca, though impatient, leaned in.
"Why are so many people here today? You always have the inside scoop. Care to share?"
"Hmph!" Bianca's eyes widened. She stared at Vivienne as if she were a monster. Why was she suddenly sucking up to her?
Bianca opened her mouth to curse her out, but what came out was a smug boast. "You don't know, do you? Someone is stirring up trouble again. The family's about to get a new grandson."
Bianca fell silent. As soon as the words left her mouth, she regretted them and slapped her own lips.
Damn it! That little pauper must have cast a spell on me!
