The Tea Room in the side courtyard was bathed in a warm, amber glow. Caspian's desperate affection and Vivienne's quiet smile spoke volumes in the silence.

Standing in the center of the courtyard, Alaric watched the glowing windows of the Tea Room. The warm light reflected in his dark, intense eyes, softening his usually cold demeanor.

It seemed his grandfather truly cared for Vivienne.

Lowering his gaze, Alaric concealed the emotion in his eyes, turned, and walked out of the courtyard.

"Alaric."

Just as he stepped past the outer wall, he bumped into Dorian Ravenshire.

Dorian had just left the banquet. He smelled faintly of expensive liquor. Smiling, he glanced toward the Tea Room, his tone perfectly genial. "Is the elder inside?"

Alaric gave a slight nod. "He is."

"Excellent." Dorian nodded, his refined aura intact as he prepared to step into the courtyard. Suddenly, he paused. "By the way, Alaric, I noticed quite a few students from the academy at the side banquet. I heard you invited them?"

"I did."

"With so many guests tonight, it wouldn't have been appropriate to seat them in the Main Hall," Dorian noted smoothly. "But since they are your guests, it wouldn't look good if you didn't go over and say hello. Opportunists might try to spin a narrative out of it."

Alaric maintained a polite, measured smile. "What are you suggesting, Uncle Dorian?"

Dorian smiled easily. "Leander and I discussed it. The press and media will be swarming soon. You should make an appearance at the Parlor. It would be good for the family, and good for your image."

Alaric frowned slightly.

Sensing his reluctance, Dorian offered a patient, fatherly tone. "Alaric, I know you hate playing the social game, but it's unavoidable. The Ravenshire family will be yours to lead one day. You have to get used to these kinds of obligations."

After a moment of thought, Alaric nodded. "I understand."

Looking pleased, Dorian patted him on the shoulder and started toward the Tea Room.

As they stood shoulder-to-shoulder, Alaric spoke up. "Uncle Dorian."
