Three years later.
The autumn sun blazed just as fiercely as it had when she was twelve.
Sunlight filtered through the tinted windows, dancing over the amber leather seats like shattered gold.
In the backseat, the young woman leaned against her hand, staring out the window. Her luminous skin seemed almost translucent in the light. Beside her, the young man sat with his gaze lowered, a Bible resting in his hands. His fingertips brushed the pages, breaking the golden rays that spilled across them.
Wesley adjusted his sunglasses. "Sir, Miss Lexton, we've arrived."
Alaric's fingers paused. He looked up toward the window.
Vivienne stretched lazily and casually pulled out her phone, pulling up the FortunePay QR code. "Another quiet day."
Their agreement from three years ago still stood: as long as Alaric stayed quiet during their rides, she would earn a thirty-thousand-dollar reward.
Alaric turned to look at her.
After today, the girl before him would officially be a high school student. Not only had her chest pin changed from the Sword of the Valiant to the Shield of the Rose, but her once-boyish figure had begun to soften into stunning curves.
He discreetly looked away, his expression flat. "I heard you asked Julian for more."
Assuming the young heir was about to lecture her, Vivienne deadpanned, "That's completely different. Julian loves having his ego stroked. I have to agree with everything he says and provide constant emotional support. Charging a premium is only fair, isn't it?"
Emotional support? Alaric's mouth twitched. He opened the door and stepped out.
No wonder Julian strutted around school with such inflated arrogance every time he dropped her off.
"Hey!"
