Completely oblivious to what was happening behind them, Vivienne and Bianca returned to Vellmont Lodge, immediately locking the door to share secrets. Marissa was already accustomed to this routine.

The two sat on the edge of the bed and resumed their earlier conversation.

"You said Benedict could never do it? Why?"

Bianca replied, "I only recently heard this from my mom. Don't be fooled by how intimidating Benedict looks running The Shadow Chamber; he's actually carrying a lot of pain. He used to be the kind of guy who wouldn't even hurt a fly, but in the end, he killed his own wife with his bare hands to protect Grandfather."

Vivienne was stunned. "Who did you say?"

Bianca let out a soft sigh, her tone laced with sorrow. "Uncle Benedict's story is far more melodramatic than any of the novels we read. He met Seraphina at a ball. She was working as a hostess there, and a group of rich kids were getting her drunk and humiliating her. He couldn't stand it and stepped in to save her. One thing led to another, and they fell in love."

"But she was from a lowly background, entirely unfit for him. He knew the family rules. To force Grandfather to accept her, he even gave up his right to the family's billion-dollar inheritance, walking away with nothing. Seeing that he couldn't be persuaded, Grandfather had no choice but to let it slide. Later, Aurelia was born. Grandfather couldn't bring himself to abandon his granddaughter, so he agreed to let Seraphina formally join the family."

"But that decision nearly cost Grandfather his life. During the tea ceremony, Seraphina pulled a gun from her sleeve and shot Grandfather point-blank. After he collapsed, she was about to fire a second shot. In that critical moment, it was Uncle Benedict who pulled the trigger and killed her."
