At noon, everyone moved to the dining room. Each person's face was grim, as if they were facing a great enemy. Even the usually cheerful Lucian wore a pained expression.
Serena's position was awkward. Unable to join the conversation on either side, she tried to make herself as small as possible, trailing at the very back. Still, this was the first time she had eaten at the same table as the Ravenshire family outside of the annual celebration. The thought sparked a bit of anticipation in her heart; she would have to be on her best behavior.
Obsidian Estate had two dining rooms. One was a private banquet hall that could accommodate two or three hundred people, and the other was for daily family use. Though called 'daily,' the room could easily seat fifty or sixty people.
The staff had already set the table, and they hurried forward to pull out chairs as the family entered.
Serena took a deep breath, suppressing her excitement and pretending to be calm and composed as she took her seat.
Once everyone was seated, Cedric walked in from outside. "Everyone, the Old Master isn't feeling well. He said for you all to disperse after the meal."
A collective sigh of relief filled the room.
After relaying the message, Cedric left. The family members exchanged glances, then numbly lifted the lids of the soup bowls before them.
Their reaction was baffling. Serena was confused but followed everyone's lead. The moment she opened her bowl, the excitement in her heart was completely overwhelmed by a fishy, metallic smell.
"Urgh!" Unable to stop herself, Serena clapped a hand over her mouth and turned away, gagging.
What was this?
No way!
Are we eating it raw?
Serena stared in shock, her hand still over her mouth as she looked at the others around the table.
The Ravenshire family members, however, were unfazed. Although they disliked the taste, years of this ordeal had given them some resistance. Almost without a word, they began to eat. But the smell was indeed overwhelming, and nearly everyone showed varying degrees of difficulty swallowing.
Serena was speechless.
Just then, the maids filed in, carrying a new round of soup bowls.
"Sirs, madams, the Old Master has instructed that every last bite must be eaten."
The Ravenshire family members' faces darkened as they all turned to look at the culprit. Serena hadn't expected the meal to turn out like this, and she stood there, pale-faced, unable to voice her misery.
Evelyn pointed unkindly to a corner. "Mrs. Lexton, there's a spot over there. Please move so you don't disturb everyone else."
Serena's expression turned awkward. Just as she was about to get up, the head housekeeper stepped forward with a smile and stopped her. "Miss Evelyn, the Old Master said that a family should eat at the same table. No one is to leave."
Evelyn's face fell, and she shot Serena a harsh glare. "Wise up."
Serena looked chagrined.
Dorian wiped his mouth with a gloomy expression. His gaze inadvertently swept over the restless Serena. The Old Master was truly something else; nothing escaped him, he saw everything.
