Having learned their lesson, everyone kept a wary eye on Serena. Although the second bowl was even harder to swallow than the first, they managed to get it down without incident.
Once the soup bowls were empty, Dorian was the first to rise, a polite smile on his face. "My apologies, everyone. Today's incident was my fault. I'll host next time to make it up to all of you. For now, I'll be taking my leave."
At his words, everyone else began to stand up as well.
"You're being too formal, Dorian," Lucian said. "We're family. No need for such pleasantries."
Dorian nodded, glanced at Victoria, and then turned and walked out of the hall. Having consumed two bowls of the soup, Victoria was feeling so nauseated that she didn't even bother with polite goodbyes and ran after Dorian.
"Dorian! Dorian, stop! You explain yourself!" Once out of the dining room, Victoria caught up to Dorian and questioned him furiously. "Are you insane? How could you acknowledge that bastard?! You…"
"Shut up!" Dorian snapped, his patience worn thin.
Victoria shot back, "You're telling me to shut up?! Dorian, that's a senior position in Congress we're talking about! The Ravenshires can afford to be cavalier, but what about my reputation? What about the Montclairs' leverage?"
A vein throbbed in Dorian's temple, and his expression darkened without warning.
Victoria flinched, a little intimidated. "You... you're really going to give up the power you have now? My brother..."
Dorian said, "If you don't clear your head right now, I don't mind adding the scandal of a divorce to the list."
"!" Victoria looked at Dorian, stunned and in disbelief. "What did you say? You want to divorce me? Your father would never..." Her words caught in her throat as a sudden realization made her tremble.
Dorian let out a cold laugh and walked out of the corridor.
The Montclair family had played their hand well. If it weren't for the Old Master, he would have been completely ensnared in their scheme.
Speaking of his rebellious son, Leander also had a headache. "Where else could he be? Running wild all over the world. I don't know who he gets that reckless nature from!"
"Who he gets it from? The Old Master said that Julian's wild streak reminds him of himself when he was young." Both Dorian and Leander had only one son. Compared to her older nephew, Jaxen, Evelyn was fonder of her younger nephew, Julian Ravenshire.
"Leander, don't say I didn't warn you, but I hear Alaric is coming back soon."
Leander's eyelids twitched.
Evelyn leaned in closer and whispered, "The first branch has always been the apple of Father's eye. If Alaric comes back, there won't be any room for us to speak. Even Dorian has sent his illegitimate son to Obsidian Estate. You can't just do nothing. Even if you don't think for yourself, you should at least think about Julian."
Leander lowered his gaze, his eyes inexplicably darkening.
