Goldbay District, The Mirage Palace.
The bustling, deafening charity gala had been unceremoniously shut down. A legion of men in black suits blocked every single exit, while the elite guests sat frozen in their seats, too terrified to even breathe loudly.
In the top-floor VIP suite.
The massive floor-to-ceiling windows reflected the suffocating, oppressive tension inside the room.
Caspian rested both hands heavily on his cane, sitting at the head of the room with his eyes closed.
Alaric and Julian flanked him. One was expressionless; the other was radiating barely suppressed fury.
Victoria was collapsed against the sofa, covering her face as she sobbed softly.
Dorian, annoyed by her crying and terrified his father would take his anger out on him, put on a stern face and barked, "Enough! You've completely humiliated us at your own gala, and you still have the nerve to cry?"
"That's exactly why I'm so upset! I have no idea who could be so despicable! If anything happens to Vivi and Cyril, I'll never be able to clear my name."
Victoria sounded more heartbroken with every word, looking at Caspian through tear-filled eyes. "Dad! I called you the exact second I realized Vivi was missing. I swear I had nothing to do with this."
Julian sneered at her. "Grandpa didn't say you had anything to do with it. Why are you trying so hard to defend yourself? Benedict has already sent people out to investigate. I'm sure we'll have answers soon. You should probably just quiet down and wait."
Victoria choked on her words. Seeing that Caspian wasn't going to step in to defend her, she lowered her head and wiped her tears in bitter silence.
After Balthazar had taken them, she had calculated the perfect time to alert the family, fully intending to wash her hands of any suspicion. But she never could have anticipated that within thirty short minutes, five helicopters would swarm the airspace over Goldbay, and Caspian would personally drop into The Mirage Palace with half the Ravenshire family's forces.
Her hysterical crying wasn't entirely an act. At least half of it was genuine, paralyzing fear.
Dorian covertly studied Caspian, but the old man kept his eyes shut, his expression entirely unreadable.
The room plunged back into a suffocating silence.
A commotion echoed from the hallway. Benedict pushed the door open and strode in, with Cedric close on his heels.
Victoria was suddenly hit with a sickening wave of dread. She shot a look at Dorian, but he mirrored her confusion, clearly failing to grasp the old man's strategy.
Just then, the door opened again, and Jasper stepped inside.
"Sir."
Caspian's thumb slowly dragged across his sandalwood prayer beads. "Found them?"
Jasper nodded. "Yes. The tracker confirms Miss Lexton is currently at Merriton Port, aboard the Lucifer I."
Victoria's face drained of all color.
How was that even possible?
Even Benedict looked utterly stunned.
