Victoria calculated her next move, forcing a look of deep shame onto her face. "It's all my fault. If I had just been more attentive, the Beaufort family wouldn't have found an opening. Dad, Solenforth is demanding we hand over the killer. Are we really going to surrender Cyril?"
Is this woman out of her mind?
Dorian frowned and cut in before anyone else could react, his voice dropping to a dangerous chill. "Shut up! How could you even suggest that? Cyril is my son. I will never agree to sacrifice him. Besides, he is a victim here."
He said this entirely for Caspian's benefit. The old man had deployed immense resources to save the kids; handing Cyril over now was unthinkable. Victoria was becoming a liability.
Startled by his outburst, Victoria bristled at the phrase 'Cyril is my son'. She grit her teeth, glaring at Dorian. "What a wonderful father you are! Have you forgotten you have another son stuck in a foreign country unable to come home? Jaxen is in Solenforth right now! Have you even considered that this mess might drag him down?"
"Enough!" Caspian barked, his voice slicing through their argument like a blade.
Terrified of the patriarch, Victoria quickly lowered her head. "Dad, I didn't mean to sound resentful. I'm just worried this might cause a rift in the family. I spoke without thinking. What I meant was—"
Caspian raised a hand, silencing her. "A rift? After something like this, what kind of rift could there possibly be?"
Victoria froze, forcing herself to continue. "Balthazar wasn't just anybody. Since Cyril managed to defend himself, was the final shot really necessary? He didn't consider the family's position at all."
Caspian shook his head, unable to hide his profound disappointment. "Who cares who he was? Does the name Beaufort make his life more precious than a Ravenshire's? He hurt my grandchildren. Taking his life is the bare minimum. If Cyril didn't have that kind of ruthless resolve, he wouldn't be fit to call himself my grandson. Thankfully, he didn't disappoint me."
Victoria went pale. Why? I just wanted to excise that little bastard from this family. Why does everything I do backfire?
Swallowing her bitter resentment, she forced a strained smile. "I was just worried about the diplomatic fallout with Solenforth..."
"You think a problem this simple requires worrying?" Caspian sighed. He turned his attention to Alaric, who had remained perfectly silent. "Alaric, tell me. How do we resolve this?"
Alaric looked up, his gaze calm and detached as he addressed the room. "The Merriton Naval Fleet received intelligence that someone was using Lucifer I as cover for an illegal arms trade. When the Navy attempted to board and search, they met malicious resistance. To secure the maritime borders, they executed a mandatory enforcement. The vicious Volgaar Raiders instigated a violent riot to escape. In the ensuing crossfire, Lord Balthazar was tragically struck by a stray bullet from the raiders, resulting in instantaneous death."
The old man stood up and walked over to Alaric. The boy rose to meet him, respectfully hiding his usual aloofness.
Caspian patted his shoulder. "Well done. You've grown up. You actually act like an older brother—unlike some people."
Dorian stood up awkwardly. "Dad."
He knew exactly who 'some people' referred to.
Caspian waved him off. "Enough. Cyril should be awake by now. Go see him."
"Yes, Dad," Dorian nodded.
