After the trip to the Goldbay District, everyone followed Caspian back to Stormhollow. Cyril was the only one who remained in Merriton City.
After sleeping soundly through the night, Vivienne finally woke up on a sun-drenched afternoon.
Her brain had barely booted up, and her consciousness was still a bit foggy.
At first, she only noticed the blinding sunlight. Just as she raised a hand to block the glare, someone stepped up to the edge of the bed.
His shoulders were broad, casting a shadow over her.
Backlit by the sun, the man's sharp, handsome features were strikingly stoic.
"Cyril Bean?"
Alaric's indifferent gaze grew a fraction colder. "No."
"Julian?"
Alaric remained silent. He turned on his heel, fully prepared to leave, but then he seemed to remember something. His eyelids fluttered, and his gaze swept lightly across the girl's face before he turned back around.
"..."
Vivienne's groggy expression instantly sharpened. Wasn't this little prince infamous for his absolute intolerance of being annoyed? That trick worked every single time. Why did it fail today?
"Miss Lexton, you're finally awake!"
Marissa had paced between the master bedroom and the kitchen countless times. Seeing Vivienne's open eyes filled her with sheer joy. Ignoring Alaric's presence, she rushed to the bedside.
"You've slept for so long! You must be starving. What do you want to eat?"
"Marissa?" Vivienne looked around, finally realizing she was back in Whitestone Lodge. She rubbed her stomach. "I really want some Vindrell-style Soup Dumplings."
Alaric lifted his gaze and glanced at her.
"I knew it! The dumplings are already prepped. I'll go steam them right now." Marissa nodded respectfully toward Alaric and practically sprinted out of the room.
Vivienne clicked her tongue. "Fine. What do you want to know?"
"Why did Balthazar kidnap you and Cyril?"
Vivienne shrugged. "What else could it be? The socialite and I were the prettiest girls at the banquet. Who else was he going to grab?"
"Did he mention who his accomplice was?"
"No."
"..." Alaric stared straight into her eyes. "How did you two kill Balthazar?"
"With a gun. It was his own gun, actually. He was going to shoot us, but karma got him first. Isn't that hilarious?"
Alaric didn't find it funny. "What I mean is, Balthazar was a top military commander. Ordinary people couldn't even get close to him. What exactly did you two do to make him lower his guard?"
