Vivienne answered without a second thought, "I don't know. Cyril killed him. I passed out."
"There was a laptop in his room, but the files on it were automatically wiped. Who deleted them?"
"I don't know. I passed out."
"Was it Balthazar himself? Why would he stop halfway through to destroy his own files?"
"I don't know. I passed out."
Alaric nodded slowly, leaning back slightly, his tone completely casual.
"Why was your leg injured?"
"I don't know. I..."
Vivienne froze, the realization suddenly hitting her.
The injury was located dangerously close to her upper thigh. If she claimed ignorance about a wound in such an intimate spot, she would essentially be telling Alaric that someone had been feeling up her legs while she was unconscious.
Vivienne quickly changed her tune. "Oh, right! I remember now. I was so terrified that I cut myself to stay awake."
"You cut yourself..."
Before Alaric could finish, Vivienne cut him off with a counterattack. "I have a question for you too. Did you find the hidden room and save us?"
Alaric assumed she was about to thank him. He avoided her gaze and offered a soft, "Mhm."
Vivienne immediately fired the first shot of her ambush. "Alaric, you did that on purpose, didn't you? I had a tracker on me! I minimized the search time as much as humanly possible, so why did it take you so long to get there? Do you realize that if you had been even a second later, I... I would have been dead!"
Alaric stared at her in silence. "..."
"Did you block the search teams again? Did you try to stop them from sweeping the ship just so we would die? You really are a cold-blooded monster."
Vivienne forced a tight smile. "Got it. Next time, I'll just eat your brain instead."
Alaric stood in silence for a moment before turning and leaving the room.
Wesley had been outside in the courtyard playing with Little Stray. Hearing Alaric's footsteps, he swiftly scooped the small turtle into his pocket and hurried after his boss.
"Boss, how did it go? What did Miss Lexton say?"
Alaric paused, glancing back at the flower-covered walls of Whitestone Lodge. "Not a single word of truth."
Wesley offered a look of deep sympathy. "I told you asking her wouldn't work. See? You just went in there to get yelled at. Honestly, Miss Lexton is on a legendary kill-streak when it comes to pissing you off."
Alaric shifted his gaze toward Wesley. Wesley immediately snapped his mouth shut, nodded vigorously, and slid his sunglasses back down over his eyes.
