“Get out! All of you, get out!”
The moment Talia entered Echostone House, she heard the little tyrant’s roar coming from the main hall.
She sighed softly and walked in. “You may all leave.”
As soon as Bianca saw Talia, she rushed over, aggrieved. “Mom, Grandpa is playing favorites! He’s sending me to Alderwick. Mom, I don’t want to go to that godforsaken place. Can you take me back? I want to go back to the Whitmore family.”
Talia already knew what had happened in the side hall. She gently touched Bianca’s forehead. “Listen to your grandfather. I’ll have Tessa go with you.”
Bianca’s eyes flared with betrayal. She lunged, shoving Talia away with the desperate strength of a cornered animal. “No way! My last name is Whitmore, not Ravenshire. I want to go back to the Whitmore family.”
Talia was caught off guard and nearly fell, but thankfully Lucian arrived just in time to steady her.
Lucian, the eldest of the third branch, had always held authority among the children. Seeing Bianca raise a hand to her own mother, he became furious and stepped forward to reprimand her. “Bianca! You’re getting more and more out of line. How could you treat your mother like that? Apologize!”
At this point, Bianca completely broke down, crying and smashing things. “Apologize, apologize! Why do you always tell me to apologize! Why does no one ever ask what I think? I won’t apologize! I will never, ever apologize! I’d rather die!”
A vase shattered at Lucian’s feet with a loud crash.
Lucian’s expression shifted. He moved to teach Bianca a lesson but was stopped by Talia. Lucian looked displeased. “You’ve all spoiled this child rotten. If we don’t discipline her now, what will she become later?”
Talia looked at the emotionally crumbling Bianca, her eyes filled with heartache and exhaustion. “Let her calm down first.”
Benedict agreed, patting Lucian’s shoulder. “Girls are different from boys. You think you can just smack her around like those two little rascals of yours when they misbehave?”
With that, Benedict walked forward with a smile. “Bianca, be good. When you get back, Uncle will take you to have fun on the West Side. Didn’t you always want to learn how to shoot? Uncle will teach you when you come back.”
Bianca grabbed an apple from the fruit platter and hurled it at Benedict’s face. “I’m not interested!”

A gentle breeze blew through the garden pavilion at Northwing Court. The tea had gone cold. Caspian sat alone in a rosewood armchair, lost in thought. Next to him sat a goofy-looking wolf doll that seemed completely out of place.
Cedric walked into the pavilion, glancing at the wolf doll first. “Sir, Miss Lexton didn’t return to Vellmont Lodge. She wouldn’t let me drive her. It looked like she was heading toward Echostone House.”
Caspian’s gaze wavered. He suddenly remembered the look in Vivienne’s eyes when she said goodbye—so earnest and trusting, as if she truly understood his intentions.
“Sir, could there be a problem? Should I have someone check on them?”
Caspian shook his head. “Let the children resolve their own issues. Flowers that are constantly coddled will only be delicate, not resilient.” Then, a thought struck him, and his expression darkened. “Have you figured out what happened at Vellmont Lodge?”
“Yes.” Cedric nodded, but then his expression changed slightly as something else came to mind. “Sir, there’s one more thing, also concerning Vellmont Lodge…”
