Bianca rolled her eyes at Jade and pulled Vivienne off to the side.
Aurelia smiled politely. "No thanks, we just got here. We're going to rest for a bit."
"Come on, come on! We've already picked teams." She turned her gaze to Alaric. "Alaric, you should come too! Preston is on Sienna's team. If you don't join us, we're definitely going to lose."
She had originally wanted to beg Julian, but remembering how cold he'd been a few days ago, she swallowed her pride and asked Alaric instead.
"Jade!"
Seeing that Jade had managed to strike up a conversation with the Ravenshire heir, the rest of the girls excitedly swarmed over.
Lana glanced timidly at Julian, her voice soft. "You haven't even seen your rooms yet, right? Do you want to rest first?"
"The rooms all look the same, skip it. Let's go race!"
"Yeah, yeah, we have plenty of time to rest later."
Isolde stood at the edge of the group, her gaze resting lightly on Alaric's profile. The boy holding the flowers in the alleyway had single-handedly defined her entire adolescence.
Two years had passed, and she was fully accustomed to her status as the eldest daughter of the Blackthorne family. She had made friends of her own standing and had even gotten into The Academy of Military & Governance with stellar grades. The distance between her and the boy from the alley was no longer an insurmountable chasm.
Vivienne adjusted the brim of her hat, her gaze sweeping from Lana to Isolde before returning to her own manicured nails.
"Well, well. I was wondering what all the noise was about. If it isn't our very own teenage hero, the One-Star Brevet Second Lieutenant."
A sharp, grating male voice cut through the cheerful chatter. A group of boys and girls sauntered out from under the covered bridge.
