Lana froze. She had planned to wait for Jade to press the issue so she could casually drop Vivienne's arrogant quote. But Jade had completely brushed it off. Just as Lana was trying to figure out how to steer the conversation back to Vivienne, the Ravenshire heir had willingly handed her an opening.
She hesitated for a second, then nodded. "I did. Miss Lexton said that if everyone was willing to wait, they could wait. If not, we could go ahead and discuss things first."
She made sure to choose her words carefully, attempting to repeat them verbatim.
It wasn't that Lana actively wanted to go against Vivienne. It was just that the Bellamy family had finally secured an invitation to this high-society gathering, and they couldn't afford any mistakes.
Seeing how awkward the situation was getting, she worried the Cavanaugh family would question whether the Bellamys even belonged there. Her family had instructed her to find a scapegoat if things went south.
Coincidentally, Jade's offhand remark earlier had given her the perfect target. Vivienne had Grandpa Caspian backing her—even Preston couldn't touch her.
Moreover, Lana had observed her closely. Vivienne did whatever she wanted, and all the elite girls whispered that she was the most arrogant girl in Stormhollow. If Vivienne took the fall for ruining the vibe, the powerful families backing these heirs would just swallow their grievances rather than take their anger out on the Bellamys.
Lana usually prided herself on being clever, confident she could maneuver Vivienne into taking the blame without directly offending her. But Vivienne's pointed, sarcastic warning moments ago made her realize this girl was not to be trifled with.
On the walk back, she realized her miscalculation. Vivienne wasn't Jade. The fact that a mere adopted daughter held so much weight with Caspian Ravenshire meant she had to be ruthlessly smart. Lana shouldn't have underestimated her.
If Jade hadn't kept pushing the topic, Lana would have let it go. But since someone else handed her the ladder, she had to take the shot.
As soon as Lana finished speaking, the eyes of every Ravenshire in the room locked onto her. Even Alaric turned his head from the window to stare her down.
"Is there a problem?"
She instantly felt a crushing, invisible pressure bear down on her. She forced a stiff smile and looked at the group.
Isolde noticed the hostile shift in the atmosphere and lowered her head, looking thoughtful.
Jade, however, had the slowest reflexes of them all and remained completely oblivious to the tension. She pulled out her phone and announced loudly, "Sienna's group came up with a few themes: a pool party, a midnight run, or a team survival game. What do you guys think?"
"Any ideas? Julian?"
Julian hooked a finger around his ear. "Not interested."
