I stormed out of the study, muttering under my breath while pretending to not notice the entry who I had long been waiting for.

“Where’s Daria?” I demanded of a maid who was quivering by the corner in my annoyed state. Not caring how much I intimidated her I growled, “Speak.”
The maid stammered out softly, “S-She said she was heading to the banquet early, Aloha Caleb. The guests would start arriving soon and she wanted to help her friend out.”
I scowled openly.
“Of course she did,” I let my grumbles become louder as I walked past the maid. “She has no sense of propriety.”
“Alpha Caleb,” a soft voice stopped me in my tracks. I turned to see Demi standing, her hair disheveled. She was still wearing the nightgown from the previous night, but had a blanket draped over her.
Her eyes were shifting, looking a little nervous. Even her smile wavered.
“Ah,” I kept my tone without emotion. “You’ve returned.”
“I… I’m sorry. I slept at a pack house last night.” Her face twitched slightly as she adopted a confused expression.
Waving her off I shook my head, muttering under my breath, “I don’t have time to deal with this right now.”
But before I could walk off, she stopped me.
“I wanted to apologize to you Alpha Caleb. And to Luna Daria,” she said softly, her face a mask of sadness.
I could barely hold myself back from sneering and instead kept my face as impassive as ever.
“She’s not my Luna. And she’s not here,” I let a hint of frustration tinge my voice. Demi blinked at me, twice, at my less than stellar behavior. Pausing, I appeared to restrain myself and palmed my face with a weary sigh.
“I apologize,” I finally said to her. “There’s been a lot going on lately.”
Her lips parted into a small ‘o’ and then she asked tentatively.
“Between you and your mate?”
I slowly, very hesitantly, nodded.
“It’s nothing to trouble yourself with, but it does disrupt my life,” I explained. “Anyway, let it be. For what

happened last night, I really am not upset as I was before. There was a lot of tension on both sides, and I’m sorry for having you experience that.”
Fuck, I was lying through my teeth. If not for the motivation I had burning within to deal with the rogues and take down Eres, I wouldn’t even come within five feet of her, much less talk to her like this.
“Thank you, Caleb,” her voice was full of relief, her hands holding the blanket tightly still. She looked absolutely pitiful.
“It’s no problem. have to head to Jacob’s engagement banquet.” I glanced at her, searchingly. “What about you? Will you be coming?”
She shook her head, but asked, “Is that wise? I don’t think I was invited.”
“Nonsense,” I feigned vehemence and folded my arms. “You know Jacob. Even though it’s been years, I’m sure he’d want you to come. In fact, you can accompany me, if you want.”
Asking her to be my date was a step in the right direction it seemed, because she lit up brightly.
“Do you mean that, Caleb? I can go with you?”
“Of course. Have the maid dress you in something nice,” I replied with a smile, assuring her. “Besides, since MY mate doesn’t care to accompany me, someone has to.”
Her eyes flickered and I could just about see the gears turning in her head.
I knew I had her.
“Okay, I’ll
go
and get ready,” she whispered with a small smile. I nodded at her and waited until she’d entered her bedroom before heading to mine.
I muttered under my breath, “This better fucking work,” as I took off my clothes and went tk have a shower.
An hour later, it was Demi that was by my side as we reached the banquet hall.
She was dressed to the nines, her hair pulled up into a soft updo that framed her face perfectly. Her eyes were lined with kohl, her lips a deeper shade of pink.
The dress and jewelry she wore made her stand out as a pale beauty that could hardly be outdone,
But I fought to refrain from scowling as we were greeted by a happy Elder Gerome at the door. His brows furrowed and eyes moved from me to Demi.
“Elder Gerome,” I greeted, flashing a smile at him. “It’s an honor to be here,” I kept my tone formal.
He nodded slowly but said nothing.
I could see the confusion on Elder Gerome’s face, his posture stiff as he maintained a polite smile while glancing at Demi.
I was sure he’d have too many questions for me later. Many others in the pack might not know I had

reconciled with Daria, but he surely would have – he and his grandson were great gossips.

I pretended to not notice and pulled Demi into the hall with a charming smirk on my face. Gesturing to the first server I saw, I grabbed two glasses of champagne and handed one to Demi. She took it, her cheeks flushed as she clinked her glass with mine.
“To an exciting night,” I toasted, letting my eyes wander. I could see Master Killian with Eric by his side. They barely glanced my way but I nodded imperceptibly, knowing they were watching. Jacob and Sabrina were the center of attention, and I didn’t care to distract them tonight. It was their day, even though I knew for sure that there was more security in this place than there would be usually. If any fight broke out it would be immediately quelled.
The ambience in the hall was entirely romantic. I listened to the music while downing the glass of champagne. Where was Daria?
I didn’t want to think about what the plan for tonight entailed. This was the beginning of Demi’s unraveling – she just didn’t know it.
I picked up another glass of champagne and continued drinking while making the rounds with Demi on my arm. Anyone who asked about her presence got a smile and ‘She’s a friend of mine’ from me. It was innocuous at best, but I knew there were many possible definitions for the word ‘friend’, and Demi knew that too. With my previous reputation for having lovers that hadn’t quite been extinguished, I knew what many guests from other packs would think.
As time went on, Demi even began to socialize as I did, staying close to me, her arm consistently looped around mine. We looked like a couple.
Meanwhile I was biding my time.
Where the hell was my mate?
By then I had already downed over six glasses of champagne. If I didn’t feel a slight buzz then I’d be lying. The music and alcohol in my system made me long for a distraction, anything to ease the thoughts of where Daria was.
Seeing Demi look longingly towards the dance floor at the center of the hall, I took the hint. Anything to keep
her at ease.
“Dance with me,” I said to her. Her lips parted and cheeks became even more flushed. She nodded after a brief moment, her eyes filled with joy.
Without a word I discarded both our glasses, took her by the hand and led her out. In the eyes of everyone it was just a simple dance. But to Demi it was a sign that her plans were working.
I smiled charmingly and led her through a waltz.
My movements were perfect to a tee. And she leaned in close, her perfume mixed with her scent was cloying to the point of causing nausea. But I kept my mouth shut and a smile on my face, lest I lose it.
The dance was over before she knew it, and I twirled her before dipping her to end it. She giggled as I pulled her back up, releasing her.

“That was fun,” she sounded enthralled and enthusiastic.
“Was it?” A cold female voice close to us made Demi stiffen, her lips twitching.

I turned to glance at Daria who was staring at us with a cold look. It was positively icy. For a bit I nearly thought that she was truly furious with me, but I kept calm.
My eyes could hardly keep from roving over Daria’s body. She wore a black dress, strapless and form fitting. The fabric had a sheen to it, with hints of metallic embroidery all over it. It was simple, understated yet absolutely beautiful.
At some point my eyes became drawn tk her neck, a gold choker with a sapphire hem at the center of it.
“You two looked like you were enjoying yourselves,” Daria continued, twirling the wine glass full of red wine in her hand with a smile that was piercing.
“Daria,” I warned. “Now is not the time for this.”
“Of course you’d say that, Caleb,” she kept her voice low enough that no one would hear us, but it didn’t ease the cutting tone in her words. “You have been defending her from the start. You would have let her go last night if I didn’t see what happened, wouldn’t you?”
Demi’s lips quivered and she choked out, “I… I actually came here to apologize to you, Lady Daria. Im sorry for what happened last night. Im sorry for accusing you needlessly and-”
“Save it.” Daria coldly cut her off, interrupting her sniveling. Truly on the inside i smirked, but had to keep up
the rude.
“She’s already apologized for what happened. It’s over,” I said with a mild annoyance. “You should stop trying to stir up trouble.”
