Chapter 101

Chapter 101

Daria’s POV

:

From the way he grabbed me and kissed me you’d think he was a starving man.

I held back the relief and giggles that rang in my thoughts and wrapped my arms around him.

“You wicked woman,” He said in a low growl as he finally gave my lips some reprieve. I felt mildly dazed; my lipstick was certainly worn off by now, and his eyes lit a fire in me that made me want to disregard all propriety without hesitation.

“You’re the one who came to the banquet with her,” I accused, albeit with a slight smile. “You even danced with her too.”

“Only because you took your damn time,” he quipped, eyes full of frustration. His grip on my waist tightened. “You really let me spend way too much time trying to distract her.”

He really looked annoyed, I thought with warmth welling up in my chest. Without thinking I placed my hand on his chest and leaned in to kiss him again, a slow, chaste kiss.

“I love you,” I whispered.

It wasn’t a new realization. But it was something that felt real and raw. I never felt more assured in my relationship with him than I did right then.

Caleb’s eyes softened, and he pulled me closer.

“I wish I could take you home right now,” his words were low, full of want and promise.

“Ahem,” the sound of a throat clearing made us turn to see Jacob and Sabrina standing by the entrance. “Are we interrupting something?” Jacob asked with a small smile.

“Not really,” I replied before Caleb had the chance to, and stepped away from my mate.

“Good. Because you two can’t be seen together for a while. No lovey-dicey stuff,” he sounded equally amused and warning.

Beside me, Caleb grumbled under his breath, cursing in a way that made me unable to contain my smile.

At least I wasn’t the only one who was feeling the heat tonight.

“What’s the next step then?” Sabrina finally jumped in, asking softly.

“The next step,” Caleb said with authority. “Is to let her lead me into a trap. I’m sure she will make her move once she’s sure she’s not going to get exposed. Might take a while.”

“Might want to speed things up, Alpha,” Jacob said. “Eres seemed impatient to make a move as well from the

letter.”

“I agree,” I spoke up, turning to Caleb. “For now I’ll stay away. Give you some time to win her over a little. Maybe then she’ll become careless. We can have a warrior tailing her when she heads out next time to deliver a letter to her group.”

“More than one,” Sabrina reminded me, and my heart clenched uncomfortably at the thought of the female warrior that had died. Whether it was Demi that did the deed herself or not, she would pay, just like the rest of the rogues.

“Sorry to crash at your place like this,” I told my best friend, even though this was part of the plan. After all, Demi wouldn’t believe Caleb and I were having issues if I returned home like nothing happened.

Sabrina huffed as she handed me a cup of warm tea, a reminder of the old days when she was my personal maid. I took a small sip, letting it burn pleasantly down my throat. Ah, just the way I liked it.

“It’s not a problem, Daria. Look, I know you’re still not comfortable with this plan,” She patted me gently.

“I know. But it’s the best way to catch her off guard,” I mused, albeit a bit bitterly. “We’re just gonna have to deal with it.”

This was the first time in a long time that I would be without my mate entirely. Even on nights where I slept in my own bedroom at the mansion, it was after Caleb and I had spent a lot of time together. And I’d gotten used to it. This time I’d have to find a way to distract myself.

My best friend shifted, running her hands through her hair and tousling the waves. She hadn’t even changed out of her dress yet – a glimmering gold number that we had chosen and had been fitted perfectly. Even now she appeared so glamorous that I couldn’t help but smile.

“Brina, go to bed,” I sighed softly. “It’s been a long day for you, im sure. Besides im pretty certain that Jacob’s waiting for you.”

She smiled in response, and the warm glow of the light caught the stain of pink on her neck and chin.

After I hurried her out and shut the door i sighed again. I was alone, and I sat on the edge of the bed, still in my dress. The pajamas that the maid had laid out for me was beside me. Slowly, I took off the jewelry, placing them on the vanity. Then I skillfully unzipped my dress, and was out of it in seconds.

“Need a shower,” I muttered, rubbing my arms as I was only in my underwear. The curtains were shut but it didn’t stop the breeze from reaching me where I was.

Yeah, a shower would definitely help, I shivered slightly. Goosebumps appeared on my arms as I scurried into the bathroom.

A long half-hour later I returned, with a robe wrapped around my body. The steam from the hot shower I took wafted in from behind me. This time the cool breeze didn’t affect me again. I put on the pajamas and continued to sip the rest of the tea which had cooled considerably, but was still warm enough to savor.

Finally I laid on the bed, my thoughts running rampant.

I shut my eyes, hoping that the tiredness i felt would carry me to sleep.

I listened to the sounds of crickets outside the window, and to the sounds of owls hooting from far away. I drifted, letting out a yawn as I pressed my face against the pillow, not hard enough to suffocate but enough to let the coolness of the soft object relax me.

Then I heard it, a soft groan.

‘What the hell does she want now?’

I nearly jumped out of my skin as I heard Caleb’s voice in my head.

I opened my eyes a little, sure that I was dreaming. It couldn’t be, right? This wasn’t reality. I pinched myself and hissed softly at the pain.

“Mm-wha?”

Then again, Caleb’s voice came through, like it was right out of thin air.

‘I’m not going to let you sleep with me Demi. I’m not fucking insane. Go away,’ His words ended with a series of frustrated growls that bordered on murderous.

This time I was sure. Something was wrong with me.

I raised my head and numbly sat up, before scratching my head.

‘Am I imagining Caleb’s voice in my head now? Is this a dream?’

I waited, but no sounds came again for a long while. I blinked into the darkness of the guest bedroom that was my abode for the night, frowning slightly.

I must have really imagined it.

I laid back down, thinking of my mate. He must be exhausted by now. I had barely gotten a chance to spend time with him tonight. It was terrible.
