Daria’s POV

It wasn’t until it was morning and neither Demi nor the warrior had returned that I began to grow suspicious.
Caleb must have felt the same way too, because he was downstairs in the living room before dawn broke.
Exhausted, I rubbed my eyes, mumbling, “Why are neither of them back yet?
He sat beside me, just freshly showered and his hair damp. His scent brought me a level of comfort. He patted my back, pulling me to rest in my arms. I relaxed instantly, but the frown didn’t leave my lips.
“I’m sure we will get news soon-” He was saying to me, but suddenly the sound of the front door being roughly opened made us both pause.
We both got up and walked out of the living room to see it was none other than my best friend and her mate.
But the gaze that Beta Jacob had was dark, full of grimness.
Something must be up.
“Sabrina,” I went over to my best friend, tugging on her arm gently. She didn’t respond immediately. “What happened? You both are here so early.
“It- it’s-”
“The warrior that Sabrina lent to you is dead.”
Jacob’s words sounded final, like a death knell.
“As I suspected,” I heard Eric say behind us.
Turning to glance at him I noticed he had only just entered the mansion. Perhaps from the back entrance. He looked weary, eyes heavy with sleep but he still didn’t appear
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Caleb demanded of my cousin.
“There has been a snake in your house, Alpha Caleb,” He explained. “I simply couldnt figure out what had changed. But a lot more spies appeard from the blue days ago.”
I rea;ized what he meant.
“Demi,” I seethed. “She must be one of them.”
“Is that so?” Jacob looked confused.
We had to have a long talk, it seemed.

“So you meant to say,” Jacob started after I was done recounting how Demi had tried to frame me last night, among other actions of hers that proved that she was targeting me. “That this woman entered the pack with a goal to infiltrate.”
“And it would have worked if she didn’t piss Daria off so much,” Sabrina quipped. Her brows were knitted, and her hand clenched tightly. I could tell that if Demi were here, she would have done something to her.
“There’s more,” Eric stated. “I was able to intercept this yesterday.”
He held up a letter and my eyes widened. I nearly reached for it and snatched it out of his hands myself but Caleb took the lead, grabbing the letter and unfurling it.
“What is it?” I asked impatiently, seeing his expression shift tk a darker one.
“It’s definitely him. Eres,” He said. I recalled our conversation from last night.
“Eres? Remind me who that is, man,” Jacob raised his brows.
Then Caleb sighed and went over what Alpha Townsend had said the previous day.
“Eres is one of the rogue leaders. The one we have to look out for. And he can lead us to the others,” He finished. “The letter is from someone who’s definitely a rogue.”
I took the letter gently, and read it.
‘I need to know how far you have gone. This time we need to act fast before the damn Alpha catches on. How much longer do we have to wait? My men are already sick of this.
-E’
“It’s likely,” I agreed with my mate, handing the letter out to Jacob. As he read I stated. “So my instincts were right. She came here with a purpose.”
“And that purpose was to infiltrate the pack.” Jacob said.
“Not just the pack itself, but the higher ranks. The highest rank there is,” Caleb muttered with fury. His hands clenched into tight fists, and the veins on his forehead were more prominent. “I thought I was saving her life.”
“I thought she was a member of the Renegades Pack, though?” Sabrina spoke up. “Jake, you said that she moved there with her parents a while ago, didn’t she?”
“The Renegades Pack?” Eric spoke up. He was frowning. “They are now defunct. Last I checked, anyway. The Crimson Pack has a wide network thanks to Killian.” He shrugged. “I heard it was a catastrophic event. No one could quite figure out what exactly caused it. But one day everything and everyone was just fine. Some bodies were found. And everyone just quietly forgot about it.”
It wasn’t hard to connect the dots.
The Renegades pack. Demi. The rogues.
“Fuck, this is such terrible timing,” Jacob growled in frustration, raking his hands through his hair.

I smiled sadly; apparently the battle couldn’t stop for Sabrina’s and Jacob’s engagement banquet.

“It’s fine. The pack comes first in times like this, Jake. What do you think we should do?” Sabrina spoke up.
Caleb suddenly tensed, and I turned to look at him. Before I could ask what was wrong, the knock on the door
came.
Eric’s face lit up, and he walked over to open it, revealing one other than Master Killian. His eyes surveyed the entire study calmly before he stepped in, taking Eric’s hand in his.
“Master Killian,” Caleb greeted. I stood and walked over to him, a small smile playing on my lips.
“You’re back early,” I noted with slight mirth.
“I did have to hurry,” Killian tilted his head before glancing over my shoulder. “Besides, how else could I attend the banquet tonight?”
“True,” Eric quipped beside his mate.
Killian, ever the stoic, glanced at his mate briefly, from top to bottom. Then he stated, “You’re exerting yourself again.”
“With good reason,” Eric argued, sounding a little too soft. My cousin rolled his eyes and turned to me. “Tell him, Daria.”
“Leave me out of this,” I joked, ducking to return to my seat.
Killian joined us, taking a seat beside Eric as we filled him in on everything.
“Hmm,” he replied after a brief moment. “Then we can use this to our advantage. Use the woman to draw Eres out.”
“Demi?” I asked. “She hasn’t returned yet, though.”
“But she will,” Killian responded to me. “She hasn’t completed her mission. And though you won a small battle, Daria, she doesn’t sound like the type of person to give up. She can easily keep up her act, so she will
return.”
“And how do we use her to draw Eres out?” Jacob asked the question that was on all our minds.
“By giving her what she wants,” Caleb said after a moment. His eyes were dark.
It clicked in my mind like a puzzle piece slotting into place.
“What she wants most is to succeed in her plan. She wants either you or Jacob to yield to her,” the horror couldn’t leave my voice.
“But Jacob is unavailable. His engagement banquet is proof of that,” Sabrina slowly seemed to get it.
Everyone turned to Caleb. Everyone, except for me.

The thought of having Caleb by her side, I couldn’t stomach it one bit.
I had only just begun to love being with him. Now I was going to lose him.

Standing up abruptly I walked out of the study, disregarding everyone’s eyes on me. There was a raging fire in my veins that was ignited by the thought of Demi being with Caleb. Demi kissing Caleb. Demi and Caleb, together. In bed. Everywhere.
I couldn’t take it.
I had barely gotten past the balcony when an arm pulled me back.
Whirling around I tried to shove him away but it was impossible.
“Let go of me,” I managed to get the words out through gritted teeth.
“No.” Caleb insisted. His grip on my waist grew tighter. “I know you don’t want to do this. I fucking don’t either, Daria,” his voice was low, as if he was afraid someone would hear us. As far as I was concerned, that fear might be based on truth.
“But,” he added, “We both know that there’s no other way to get her to lead us to Eres. We’ve battled against these rogues for ages now. Something’s got to give.”
I closed my eyes, feeling his warmth around my body.
For a split second, all my doubts, my fears, my past… they came rushing in.
I took deep calming breaths, fighting to steady myself from the onslaught of emotional turmoil.
“I know…” I replied in a whisper, desperate and almost pleading. “Just… don’t let it go too far… okay?”
“I swear it,” he murmured, before pressing a kiss to my lips.
I swallowed all the words I wanted to say and let the heat on his lips take me away,
By the time he led me back to the study, I felt oddly calm, even though my heart beat faster.
Facing everyone who had waited, I asked, “So how do we play this?”
