Chase Me Alpha (Daria and Caleb) novel Chapter 102

Chapter 102

Caleb’s POV

:

“Elder Talen is dead,” Callum had woken me up early to say, his tone grave.

I had expected this.

The man was going to die anyway. Sighing deeply I nodded.

“Have his body cleaned,” I ordered. “We will bury him as soon as possible. No fanfare.”

It was the greatest insult any Elder of such a prestigious pack and the Wisteria Pack could get. To be given an unremarkable burial in death.

I didn’t give a damn.

Suddenly my head snapped up and I heard voices outside. Raising my hand to Callum I sufficiently dismissed him, and stood to open the door.

The sight that met me was… something.

Daria was squaring off with Demi right in front of me. And the two instantly turned to look at me as soon as they say i had come out.

“What is going on here?” I demanded roughly.

Before Demi could speak, Daria took over, pointing at Demi.

“Look at what she’s wearing. She came out this early to find you, Caleb. Is that normal now?” Daria knew how to play the part very well. Her rage was palpable.

“She doesn’t mean any harm by it, Daria,” I found myself saying, struggling to stay in character when all I wanted to do was hold her. I recalled hearing her voice in a dream the previous nigth. It was the only thing that had somehow lulled me to sleep a little restfully.

Daria’s eyes narrowed from me to Demi with an astonishingly emotionless glare.

“Oh,” She drawled with a sneer. “I see now. You’re taking her side aren’t you? After everything?”

“She’s apologized already, Daria. And no, I’m not having it with you right now,” I kept my voice firm.

Daria didn’t say any more words, instead storming off, and brushing past me while muttering curses as loudly as possible.

I winced at the door slamming shut with a loud bang.

Sighing i closed my eyes and pinched my nose briefly.

How much longer did I have to keep this up?

“I’m sorry,” Demi’s voice quivered a bit.

“Don’t be,” I replied a moment after, opening my eyes to look her over.

I had refused her last night, because I honestly didn’t have the patience for it back then. What I hadn’t expected was for her to take it as me playing hard to get. I glanced at her outfit, which made me raise my brows.

“Do you like it?” She didn’t waste any time concealing her smile behind her hand and then, without a warning, she twirled around.

The dress was already short to begin with, but with that action of hers, it exposed the tops of her inner thighs, her creamy skin and figure on display for me to see.

“It’s… good,” I managed to hold back the words on the tip of my tongue. It wasn’t the most provocative outfit I’d ever seen. But somehow things had changed – I had changed. No more was I easily drawn simply by a pretty dress, a pretty face and a smile.

Especially not when that smile hid secrets I wanted to unravel.

“Thank you, Caleb,” Demi was barely inches from me.

Then she leaned in and pressed a kiss on my cheek. I felt it against the corner of my mouth, far too close for comfort. Her scent mingled with that terrible perfume she wore, and it made me want to retch.

“This isn’t appropriate or right,” I found myself saying the words I’d never said before in my life. I wasn’t unused to being desired by women. But this time I swore off everyone but my mate. No one else but her.

Demi giggled and placed her hand on my chest, making me tense even more.

“It feels so right. I’ve loved you even before I returned. Ever since we were kids I liked you, Caleb. I know that you’re afraid of your mate discovering. But you don’t have to worry about her. Daria wouldn’t find out.”

Couldn’t she just take a fucking hint?

My mind raced.

“I have to hurry up and get ready. Got lots of work to do,” I said before returning to my bedroom. I didn’t bother trying to hide the fact that I was running away from this woman’s wiles and her scent which always made me want to shove her off and out of this house.

Just a little longer, I thought to myself.

I tried to distract myself with thoughts of arranging Elder Talen’s quiet burial. I still had to inform the Council. I had already sent a letter to Elder Gerome, whom I trusted, and he approved of my plans regarding

that.

That was enough, even if many in the Council still seemed to be against me at the moment. I would deal with

it in time.

For the first time ever, I visited Felicia that afternoon after handling some inspection duties at the pack clinic.

I steeled myself as I walked in. I could hear nothing but silence. But as soon as the maid saw me, she bowed.

“Greetings, Alpha Caleb,” She said. Suddenly Felicia’s head snapped up. I gazed at her – the woman carrying my child. She had added a bit of weight, not too much to be considered worrying, but enough that I knew that she was doing well. My gaze drifted to her belly, which was prominent in the gown that she wore. Though she wasn’t yet close to her due date anytime soon, it was clear that she was showing. Werewolf pregnancies always developed fast.

“Caleb,” She trembled a bit and suddenly raised her hand to point at me, her eyes fixed on my face.

“You came to me to taunt me didn’t you? Coming here with that,” She stood, her eyes blazing.

I raised a brow at her, a little concerned for her mental state. What the hell was she talking about now?

Then she pointed to my face again, this time I glanced briefly at the nearby mirror. Right on the corner of my lips, where Demi had kissed me – unfortunately – was an obvious lipstick mark.

I raised my hand to wipe at it, my annoyance for Demi returning with fervour.

“Who kissed you? Let me guess, it’s that bitch Daria,” She snarled.

“You forget your fucking place, Felicia,” I snapped, my temper high, and patience running out. “Would you like me to remind you?”

“She’s the one who should know her place!” She retorted, her eyes round and maniacally furious. “She should know that I’m the only one who deserves you! I’m carrying your child!”

“You speak like a fool,” I sneered at her and her voice suddenly cut off, her face turning an even uglier shade of red. “The only reason I ever deigned to see you here today is to inform you of Elder Talen’s passing.”

Now that made her shut up. She blinked slowly, as if her mind was still processing.

“What?”

“Elder Talen is dead,” I said with a curt tone.

“T-That’s not possible!”

Her attitude made me curl my lips downward into a scowl. It was absolutely disgusting. Clenching my fists, it was all i could do to restrain myself from yelling at her. I refused to give her the satisfaction.

“Believe what you fucking like. I simply pitied you enough to give you the courtesy of knowing. Felicia,” I replied without a care in the world. For Elder Talen’s death, for Felicia, I felt nothing. No joy, no sorrow, It meant nothing but another task handled. “He will be buried in an unmarked grave. Desolate, abandoned, and soon, forgotten. His name will be struck from the history books, as will anyone in your family who supported him. He is a criminal, and will be treated as such.” I paused and then added, a little cruelly, “Consider this an official notice.”

“You… You cant do that!” She yelled, rushing to grab me. However the guards had her firmly held, preventing her from even making a move. “You’re making a mistake, Caleb! Why are you doing this to me?!”

With that, I walked out, hearing her anguished and angered screams, yells and curses. It was almost funny how much she was putting on a show now, when she had never thought to inquire about his wellbeing from the reports given to me. All this time she had focused herself on the goal of provoking me and not even bothered to check in on her aged family member. What a joke. Now she dared to use this to lash out?

“Theres no mercy for criminals,” I said to myself out loud. Thinking of all that Elder Talen had done to tarnish his legacy, I wouldn’t spare him even in death.

Felicia was still screaming as I left the safehouse. It was lucky that the walls were padded with insulation and soundproofing, perfect to muffle her shrieking voice that was akin to a banshee.

Shaking my head, I returned to my home, my thoughts filled with strategies, plans, and information that ran a mile a minute.

As soon as I stepped into the mansion, I couldn’t help but notice the eerie silence that had filled the air. Clearing my throat, I walked through the foyer only to stop short at the sight of Demi, who stood at the foot of the stairs. Her eyes met mine and she smiled sweetly.
