By the time I left the mansion dressed in my clothes for training, neither Caleb nor Demi were anywhere to be seen. The former was not pleasant but the latter was absolutely so.

Thinking of Caleb’s face as I had practically yelled at him barely an hour before made me smile. But it quickly faded as I remembered how Demi had clung to him as I had stormed off to my bedroom for a shower.

That traitorous slut, I thought with a scowl on my face.

The training this time was able to distract me, a little bit. I had come to love the way it always pulled me from my head too much, and it calmed those racing thoughts. Killian had joined Eric, and both of them worked too well together. Where one attacked, the other would dodge, and Sabrina and I had to keep up a lot. Even as they held back on their strength, it still felt like we were millions of miles away from them.

Sabrina tired out first, her legs cramping up a bit, so we stopped earlier than normal.

I rested beside my friend, pulling out the healing ointment from my jacket pocket – after the way I had first experienced sore muscles from training, I made sure to always carry it with me.

“You’re a godsend, Daria,” Sabrina hissed pleasantly as I rubbed her ankle and calves with the balm.

“Thank you,” I said.

“Now that training’s over, you can stop scowling so much. You’ve been doing that since you arrived,” My best friend nudged my elbow with a smirk.

“What? No I’ve not been,” I denied it.

“Yes you have,” Eric sounded amused as he and Killian stopped right next to where we had been resting by the large willow tree. “Did something happen or is that simply your terrible mood?”

“I did sleep funny last night,” I remarked a little sarcastically. “And I’m so hungry I could eat a cow.”

“We’d do well to find you one then,” He shot back, chuckling before asking, “really, you look stressed.”

“Being without her mate has left her unmoored,” Killian was the one to make that seemingly blase statement. But it hit hard, like a punch to the gut.

“It’s… a little difficult,” I admitted after a moment to the three of them.

“Oh, Daria,” Sabrina pulled me into a small hug. “You don’t have to feel this way.”

“I know, I know,” I sighed to myself, brushing away a strand of my hair. “It’s a lot more difficult than I had thought it would be to pretend Caleb and I are not getting along.”

I didn’t tell them that it felt too much like a reminder of my past. It would be a little too soon to say

that.

But it wasn’t any less true.

“Alright, “I shook my head, standing up. “Enough of the morose mood. I have to get some proper sleep… and find that cow so I can fill my stomach.”

“Alright,” Sabrina stood with some effort, stretching out her cramped leg. “Wow your balm does wonders, Daria. Much better than the ones we get from the clinic.”

“Thank you,” I gave her a small smile, preening. She looped her arm through mine and turned to Eric and Killian. “Okay, we’re off.”

“See you later, cuz.” Eric waved at me, already deep in conversation with his mate. The two of them leaned against each other and I smiled at the sight, before turning and leading Sabrina back to her home. Once I had seen her off, I was on my way back to the mansion.

It was already past the sunrise, and though it wasn’t super late in the morning, the entire sky was a lovely shade of blue, with the golden light of the sun streaming down over me as I walked.

I was just about to turn the corner and enter the mansion when I saw something that made me stop in my tracks.

It was none other than Demi. I watched her, keeping my body hidden as I saw her leave the mansion and rush off in swift footsteps.

My brows furrowed.

And then I saw a male warrior – dressed simply – come out from the bushes right next to me, and follow Demi; it must have been one of the warriors set to tail her.

It was clear Demi was headed to do something important, because she was clutching something to her chest.

My heart sped up. Should I..?

It was a split second decision and I set off at a sedate pace, trailing after the warrior that was following Demi.

We followed her through a lesser known path that had me raising my brows. She was more knowledgeable than I had thought. Thoughts of where she was going, who she was meeting, and what she held in her hand flitted through my mind. But the only way to know was to find out for myself.

As I walked, we entered the forest, and continued to walk. It was getting harder to keep myself from tripping as I tried my best to stay ever stealthy. Somehow, i managed it until suddenly, i saw Demi up ahead stop.

She turned to her left and waited.

I moved closer, not daring to expose myself. The warrior too noticed my presence and I pressed my index finger to my lips.

Together we waited in silence, a sense of solidarity between us. The leaves rustled, painting an otherwise romantic ambience. If not for the severity of what I was doing, I would have relaxed and laid down for a nap.

Then I heard Demi gasp and say, “Is that you? I thought you weren’t coming!”

Who?

A man’s chuckle quickly answered that.

Öf course I’d come. You’ve clearly nearly fucked things up as you usually do, Demi. I was getting impatient as

it is.”

Impatient? Something clicked.

This must be… the one she was communicating with all this time.

That letter she clutched in her hand fell to the ground as she moved closer to a shadow- no, it wasn’t a shadow, but a MAN.

“Eres, this guard uniform doesn’t suit you at all,” Demi giggled a little. “Staying at the Eastern border must be terrible.”

Eres – oh shit! – growled, but didn’t dispute her statement. He tilted his head, asking, “What news do you have for me this time?”

“Well, I’ve nearly gotten Caleb covered. I told you you could trust me. He may be a ruthless Alpha but he can’t bring himself to suspect a beautiful woman. I’m so close to getting him in my bed.”

My hands tightened.

So Eres had disguised himself as a guard from the Eastern Border. For how long? My mind whirled as I listened to more, but I had already heard enough.

The sound of a growl made me stiff.

What was that?

Suddenly a wolf jumped out towards the warrior and I.

“Glad to see you brought visitors with you, Demi.” I heard Eres’s taunting words as the wolf rogue circled us. Demi was standing by Eres’side, her eyes fixed on me with surprise, and hate. “You’re fucking lucky we have a lookout or you would have to pay for this.”

I instantly knew. We had been caught!

“Lady Daria, get behind me.” The warrior instantly shifted, charging towards the rogue. I turned, hearing a loud howl from the warrior that sent chills down my spine. It sounded a lot like ‘Run!’

I burst into a run without thinking. I heard footsteps behind, chasing after me.

As I was about to push myself forward, I saw a man blocking my path. His eyes were gleaming with a mocking look in them.

He charged at me, just like the rogues behind me.

The fight was terrible.

Maybe if I hadn’t been so exhausted from this morning’s training, I thought frantically as I continued to dodge blows from left, right and center. They were ganging up on me, not giving me a chance to escape. With swift moves I had managed to take a few of them down but they somehow multiplied.

“Leave her alive!” I heard someone yell and all of a sudden I was distracted. A blow at the back of my neck came down hard, making me cry out.

I couldn’t hold my body up any longer. My knees buckled and I fell, sweat staining my brows and wetting my lashes. My eyes pricked with tears but I fought against it. I wasn’t going to appear weak.

“Demi,” I growled, knowing she could hear me. “I’ll make sure you regret this. I’ll kill you.”

“Not today, bitch,” I heard her sneer. Suddenly another blow came down on my neck, this time, it pulled me down, down. I felt not able to move my limbs.

Everything became blurred, hazy.

“Keep her,” I heard someone that sounded faintly like Demi said. “We can use her as a hostage if things get too rough.”

“True,” Eres replied, his voice fading in and out of focus.\

Then it all went black.

I came to, feeling cold all around me. I groaned, my throat suddenly too dry.
