“Hey,” Demi said to me. I frowned slightly. Her hair looked a little disheveled, and I could smell the forest on her. She had clearly been outside.
Should I ask?
I shook my head minutely, remembering we had a plan.
I brushed past her, feeling uncharacteristically unable to keep up the act right then. Too much was on my head and on my hands to let Demi have her way right now.
As I passed by Daria’s bedroom I stopped, listening for any sound, but none came. She wasn’t there.
Returning to my bedroom I was mildly surprised to not see Daria or any trace of her in here. It was all too… disappointing. I closed my eyes and refrained from going out and getting her back. She was likely at Jacob’s and Sabrina’s place, so I comforted myself. Or hanging out with Eric and Killian. She was safe.
But why didn’t I feel at ease?
I forced myself to leave my bedroom and go to my study. Paperwork was piled up there. Reports, letters, invitations, threats, the works. The work of an Alpha never ended.
Sighing, I finally sat down at my desk to do the work I had been avoiding before.
It wasn’t until the knock on the door came that I lifted my head, realizing it was considerably dark.
“Alpha, dinner is ready,” the maid that had come in said.
That was when I looked out the window, my brows furrowed, my lips pressed together tightly.
Something felt wrong. I couldn’t deny it now.
I stood and didn’t bother heading towards the dining hall. Instead I left my home, heading to Jacob’s. If Daria was there I’d rather have dinner there than to spend my time avoiding Demi’s touch and gaze.
“Alpha Caleb,” Sabrina had met me at the entrance, looking surprised. “What brings you here? Is something wrong?”
I raised my brows, confused. “Is Daria not in?”
Her eyes widened, and she shook her head repeatedly.
“W-Why, no. She… Didnt you see her earlier? She went back home after training today. We haven’t seen her since. Actually I was going to send someone to invite her for an outing tomorrow-”
“She hasn’t been at home all day.” I gritted out.

Something pulled at my gut from the inside. I was beginning to feel it more and more – something called reading, called fear.
“Where’s Master Killian?”
“Here,” Master Killian’s voice made me turn around. There he and Eric were, dressed in semi-formal clothing, likely to have dinner with Jacob as well. “What’s the matter?” ehasked after, likely noticing the looks on our faces.
“Have you seen Daria?”
Eric frowned, and so did Killian, and they exchanged a glance.
“Have you not seen her?” Eric finally asked, his tone one of foreboding grimness.
I was beginning to lose it.
A growl left my lips.
“She’s not been at home all day,” I heard Sabrina say worriedly. “That’s not like her at all.”
Jacob must have heard the commotion because he came out.
He frowned.
“Something’s wrong,” my best friend said, exactly the same words that ran through my head like an alarm.
“We have to find her,” I clenched my hands into fists. “We have to.”
“We will,” Eric said with grave assurance.
And so the search began.
Sabrina had led us through the path where they had taken earlier that morning, but we could only detect a faint trace, nothing conclusive.
Then we reached my mansion. I frowned, staring at the bushes right by the corner.
“I think I’ve found something,” Jacob’s voice was tight with frustration. “Have you noticed there’s a guard spot missing? We’d placed them at different stations to watch Demi’s movie, hadn’t we?” He pointed to a spot not far away. “Right there.”
“That woman had gone out. I could smell it. The scent of the forest was strong on her,” I said.
That was the only signal we needed to move in the direction of the forest. Suddenly I caught it.
“Daria’s been here,” Eric caught it too, lifting his nose to sniff.
“And recently,” I added.”
That was too much of a coincidence. Everything- Daria’s scent, the warrior missing, Demi’s outing-

“If anything happened to her-” Sabrina was trembling. Jacob had tried to get her to stay behind but she had insisted on coming. She’s my best friend, she had all but yelled at Jacob who immediately gave up in the face of his mate’s fierceness.
“I will kill her,” I growled.
They didn’t say anything – I knew they were thinking the same thing.
We continued following the traces of Daria’s scent into the forest. Then we stopped.
Right there, my nose could pick up more than one scent.
“Everything seems a bit… muddled, don’t you think?” Sabrina’s voice was a hush, compared to her usually open, sassy personality.
“There was a fight here,” Killian expertly explained. Eric was by his side, bending down to pat the ground. I noticed it- a strange spot that had been dug and covered.
Without a word Eric Nolan and I began to dig through the sand, our senses detecting something but not sure of what it was.
Not until I touched a very cold hand.
My body froze
It couldn’t be-
“It’s not her,” Eric said with faint relief. But then he frowned. “Is this not the warrior that was stationed right outside?”
Jacob peered down at the dead warrior’s face. The corpse’s neck looked mangled, with dried blood all over the body.
“Yes,”He replied moments after, barely containing his rage.
“They were attacked.” Sabrina gasped in realization. “Demi and the warrior were attacked. If the warrior’s dead then- oh Goddess!” she covered her mouth, stifling a whimper.
I’d had enough, enough of pretending.
I pushed my way out of the forest, my chest heaving. Anger flooded me like a raging fire. It was impossible to control. I could hear the others shout and follow me, but I didn’t stop.
Not until I had entered my home and saw Demi standing wearing a green dress – one I instantly recognised as Daria’s – as if she was waiting for me.
“Caleb-
I didn’t give her another chance to speak. In an instant I had her pushed against the wall, my hand tightly wrapped around her slim neck. She grabbed my hand which was choking her, beginning to struggle. I lifted her up off the floor, letting her continue to flail about.

“Where… is… she?” I barely managed to keep my voice calm. Dangerously so.

“I… I don’t know what you mean… You’re crazy… P-please,” a tear rolled down her cheek and she stretched her hand toward Jacob and the others flailing. “Help me.”
“Dont fucking LIE TO ME!” I slammed her hard against the wall again, and tightened my grip like a vice. I forced her to meet my gaze head on. Her eyes were glossy, but I cared not for the terror in her eyes. “I know what you are, Demi! I know you’re a rogue. I know about Eres, ALL OF IT! SO DON’T! TELL ME WHERE SHE IS!”
“Cale! She’ll die before you can get her to talk if you continue like that! Come on, let her go! Let’s handle this together!” Jacob said, his voice loud enough to echo down through to the hallway.
I listened, for once tonight.
With a disgusted sneer I dropped Demi and watched her crumple on the floor. She coughed out, her eyes fixed on me as she sniffled a little.
Then all of a sudden…
“HAHAHAHAHAHA!” Demi burst out into a hoarse cackle, tears still streaming down her face. “I really thought I had you! I thought you were finally mine! And yet, you deceived me!”
Her words alone were enough to ignite my anger once more.
I took a step forward and Eric and Jacob flanked me at my left and right.
“Speak, now, before I carve that face of yours,” Eric threatened in a low, demanding growl. He clenched his jaw, his hands flexing.
“If you touch me, then you will never get to see that bitch ever again,” Demi smirked wickedly. Her mask had fallen now, and I could see it. “So what if im a rogue? You’re nothing but a group of spineless, clueless men that revolve around that Red Vale Pack bitch like she’s a reincarnation of the Mood Goddess!”
Sabrina hissed behind me, and I knew she would have pounced on Demi if she had the chance.
“Enogh,” I moved to grab her again, but she quickly scurried away, backing herself up against Jacob. She looked up at Jacob, her lips curled into a seductive smirk.
“I wanted you too,” She said. “If only this other bitch you call a mate would have let me,” She crooned. “I would have shown you a pretty good time. My skills are second to none-”
Somehow in the mess of her words, she had not noticed Killian reaching for her until it was too late. It was swift; he had her in a hold that she couldn’t break. Ever the efficient master, he said, “We have to be sure of her identity.”
“What?” Jacob grunted in displeasure. “We have to deal with her and deal with that pig Eren while we’re at it!”
Killian calmly raised a brow at me, before regarding the others.
I stepped forward.

“I have been conducting investigations on these rogues for long enough. I have discovered they have a way to identify themselves, especially their hierarchy. The reports reached me just this afternoon. They’re more organized than any other rogue group. Knowing their positions within the group is important.”
