Chapter 105

Daria’s POV

It was too late.

My breaths came out in harsh pants, every step a test of my strength and courage. I was fleeing, in a darkened forest, without the light of the moon shining down on me. But from what, I could hardly tell. Howling filled the air, just as the wind rushed past my ears. I sped up, unaware of the pit in front of me-

Somehow, out of nowhere, I tripped. The ground came at me fast. I opened my mouth to scream, tried to brace my arms against the shock of my fall but then, it all disappeared.

I awoke with a gasp, my heart still beating in staccato rhythm. I swore inwardly, feeling sweat beads roll down my forehead, and pool on the crook of my neck. I swallowed, audibly, and looked up.

If the sounds of crickets and owls in the otherwise silent cave wasn’t obvious enough, it was the darkness, pitch black like I was staring into nothingness, that told me it was in the middle of the night.

Exhaustion rolled over me in waves, but I blinked hard and tried to steady my breaths.

Looking at the mouth of the cave, it was possible to make out the silhouettes of three rogues standing guard.

A sense of desolation filled my body, making me sigh inwardly.

I wished I could be back at the mansion, free. And with Caleb and everyone else.

Suddenly I felt something shift and I turned around. But I was alone. No one was close enough to have caused such a reaction.

Just when I thought it was my imagination I heard something that shook me to my core.

‘Daria. Caleb’s voice sounded sleepy, drawling my name in a deep baritone. The sound was too real for me to ignore. Tentatively I felt myself reach for that voice.

‘Caleb?’

There was a pause.

My heart skipped.

Had I imagined things again?

Then I heard his voice, louder and clearer than before. More awake.

‘Am I hallucinating again?’ He asked. ‘I could have sworn I just-

‘Caleb? Is that really you?’ I felt disbelief warring with hope and budding realization deep within me. ‘Where are you?’

In my bedroom,’ he replied, just as surprised. ‘I… Daria, tell me it’s you’

Telepathy.

I was really hearing him… wasn’t I?

That was when I realized it fully.

Those times I thought I heard his voice… had been real. I hadn’t been imagining things.

I was really hearing him.

“This is… this is real…’ I felt a surge of emotion in me.

‘Yeah but how the fuck is this possible?’ Caleb sounded so… him. I couldn’t help but laugh inwardly, and this time I was aware he had heard it.

‘I have heard stories,’ I said in my head, testing my inner voice. ‘Of mates being able to communicate like this. It’s a gift, Caleb. That’s all that matters. And… it’s to our benefit.’

He didn’t say anything for a while but I knew he was in agreement.

‘I… I went after Demi,’ I finally said, cutting through the silence. I continued to speak, or rather, think – it felt like a weird cross between the two. Almost like I was addressing him face to face. Once I finished my tale of how I’d gotten taken, he sighed and told me what had happened with Demi.

A thrill ran through me, satisfied and dark, when I found out he had her imprisoned. But finding out Demi was the second rogue leader was also a shock.

‘It explains a lot,’ I said, rubbing my arms. The night was far colder and I didn’t even have a blanket. Shivering slightly, I exhaled.

‘We’re on the move, already we’ve caught over ten spies in the pack. No mercy will be shown. It’s straight execution. And Killian has sent word to the Crimson Pack. Alpha Townsend will receive a letter tomorrow morning. Taking down the rogues would be easier now we have a way of identifying them.’

‘Well be careful,’ I reminded him. ‘If Eres can disguise himself as a guard on the Eastern Border gate, then anything is possible’

‘I will handle it,’ his inner voice sounded sluggish and rough with sleep. ‘I should have figured this out. There’s been a lot of weak spots in that area, more than usual. It’s my fault.’

Hearing him speak felt like I was back in the pack, instead of facing a more uncertain position of being an abductee.

My vision blurred a bit and that was when I realized I was crying.

The night breeze cooled the streaks of tears on my cheeks, and I shivered.

‘I miss you,’ I let those words slip through the bond, reaching him.

And it was true. I missed him like I’d never thought I could miss anyone. I felt incomplete and unmoored without him.

‘I will come for you, love. Trust me. He assured me, a whisper of comfort that calmed my nerves.

Sniffling softly, I wiped my tears and with the back of my hand.

‘I understand.’

This time, it wasn’t difficult to drift off to sleep. Laying there, with Caleb’s presence filling my mind, was like a drug.

Soon all fell silent around me. I felt someone sigh, and just like that I was drawn into the realm of sleep.

I was jolted awake by the feeling of someone shaking me. I looked up to see a woman standing over me. She looked me up and down, sneering with a cold smirk.

“Morning princess,” she laughed mockingly and tossed a piece of bread at me before walking away.

I shakily lifted myself into a sitting position. I could barely maneuver my hand to pick it up from the floor. The chains rattled, and I scowled inwardly.

Damn brutes!

Just you wait, I thought, committing all of their appearances to memory. I’d be out of here soon.

‘Daria.’

I nearly dropped my bread as I heard Caleb’s voice boom in my head.

I winced visibly, turning my face away so no one would notice.

‘Ouch! Be careful! You nearly gave me a headache,’ I scolded my mate through our telepathic bond. But a part of me felt a sense of exhilaration. I had thought I had dreamed it up, and honestly hoped it wasn’t true. The night’s events being confirmed now made me all the more excited.

Caleb’s voice came in my head, a softer tone.

‘I apologize. But your cousin wants to be sure that I’m telling the truth about being able to communicate with you. Tell me what to say to him.

I nodded to myself. That sounded a lot like Eric.

‘Oh…’ I thought to myself. What could I tell my cousin? Memories of our conversation yesterday morning flashed in my head and I said, ‘Um, well, you can tell him I’m still sore from training yesterday. And I’m still so hungry. I haven’t gotten to eat a cow yet!

‘A cow?’ Caleb sounded confused.

‘Just tell him that exactly, Caleb,’ I said. ‘He’ll know what I mean.’

There was a pause and he said disbelievingly, ‘Alright I guess.’

Then came a longer pause. The thrill of being able to communicate via telepathy with my mate was wearing off, leaving behind many questions in my mind. Before I could ponder on them, I felt his presence in my head again.

Caleb returned, ‘He believes me. Finally. We need to figure out where you might be. Do you recognize the part of the forest you’re in?’
