I awoke gradually, to the deafening, comforting silence only night afforded.
My consciousness wavered in and out of the waking world, reveling in the warmth. My mind swam; memories filtering in from my abduction by Eres, down to my messy rescue.
Caleb had kept his word, he had come for me. I couldn’t stop the spread of warmth through my body, making the already comfortable temperature under the blankets toastier than ever.
Slowly, I exhaled, and stared up at the ceiling.
Recognizing the intricate patterns of the large master bedroom, I turned and predictably found myself face to face with Caeb’s chest.”
The headache I’d felt ever since I returned to the pack – caused by none other than Eres sneaking up to corner me during the fight back then – had dulled, partly due to the decoction I had insisted on drinking instead of worrying the pack doctor.
Thinking of the way Caleb had all but demanded the pack doctor to check on me over and over again with an aura of intimidation, towering over the considerably shorter and wiry doctor, made the corner of my lips quirk up.
“You’re awake,” Caleb murmured, and I felt an arm tug me closer. Underneath the blanket, our bodies were touching, my arms braced against his side as he exhaled slowly.
“I’m sorry, I woke you,” I said softly. I had no idea what time it was, but I was sure that this dutiful Alpha mate of mine wouldn’t have gone to bed at an early hour. While he had sent me off with an order to rest, he and the others had busied himself with tasks regarding the rogues.
There had been a lot of cleanup to be done.
Guilt stirred up within me – while I had slept, everyone else had been busy. The identity of slacker had never once been associated with me but it didn’t stop me from thinking of how useless I was.
“Your health matters more than your duties, love,” I nearly jumped out of my skin when I felt Caleb’s chest rumble, and my ears picked up on the words.
I was stunned. How…. Did he know what I was thinking?
Feeling a little more than exposed, I tried to laugh it off, “I had no idea my thoughts were that loud. It’s nothing, really.”
But that alone made me wonder… about how this mind link thing worked. It was very different from how kin communicated as wolves. And there was not much widely known about telepathic abilities between mates as far as I knew.
‘You’re restless,’ this time it was in my head I heard those words, echoing like they were in a large hall. 1 shivered and pressed myself to him, burying my face in his chest. His scent did wonders for calming

something I wasn’t sure I could ever admit aloud. ‘Whatever it is, we can deal with it in the morning.
‘Okay, I gave up on trying to form coherent thought processes tonight. I had to learn how to control this telepathic thing before I ended up always disturbing Caleb.
Resolving to do more research on it, I listened to my mate’s heartbeat and slowly closed my eyes, letting it lull me into a meditative state. I was hardly aware of when I drifted back into sleep, but when I opened my eyes again it was to the sounds of Caleb talking to someone at the door.
“… and have it arranged,” Caleb was saying right as I fully tuned in.
“Yes, Alpha,” I recognized the face of the guard who would report to Caleb at times. As I sat up fully, Caleb paused and glanced at me. Yawning, I covered my mouth as the guard left.
“What’s going on?” I asked, rising to greet him with a kiss. He was already freshly showered, his damp hair disheveled, with some strands clinging to his head. I hummed in appreciation as he pulled me close and delivered a kiss against the corner of my lips, before replying smoothly.
“Demi is to be executed at noon.”
Those words made me pause, but I didn’t bother saying anything in response. I had nothing to do with a wretched woman like her, and other than her petty, absolute rage-inducing attempts to seduce my mate, I didn’t care how she died either.
“Before that, I have a few things to attend to,” He finished tilting his head. “I won’t be able to join you for breakfast, love.”
“It’s fine,” I replied, before a thought sprang up in my mind, unwittingly making its way along the mind link, ‘I have to do some research anyway?’
He inclined his head again, his eyes meeting mine with a nod. Then he cupped my chin and pressed his forehead to mine briefly, leaning down. I closed my eyes, inhaling his heady musk mixed with the fresh scent from his shower.
It was barely a second, but it meant a lot.
My maid entered the bedroom shortly and I conducted my morning ablutions while making a mental list of things I would see to today.
Caleb’s birthday was coming up soon; I was sure he had no idea I was planning to make it a special one.
Wearing a black floral gown with heeled boots, my first stop was to see Eric. Though a lot of scenes remained hazy in my memories of yesterday, one thing that didn’t had to be the sight of my cousin clutching a bleeding arm with an arrow sticking out of it.
I reached the guest house within minutes, and upon walking into the small but cozy place, I saw Killian and Eric seated at the dining table, having breakfast.
“Master Killian,” I greeted with a nod, before turning to Eric. He sipped a cup of coffee, his eyes trained on me. “Eric, how’s your shoulder?” I couldn’t help the concern that showed in my voice as I moved to stand beside him.

He nodded dismissively, even though his mate’s eyes paused briefly at the shirt-covered bandaged shoulder before returning to his plate.
“I’m fine,” Eric finally said gruffly, though his cheeks were tinged with a slightly pink hue. “How’s your head?”
My smile softened, although I winced inwardly at his bluntness.
“Could be better,” I admitted. “But I no longer have a headache.”
“The Pack doctor stated you need to be careful for the next couple of days. That means no running off anywhere. And certainly no training. We’ll take a break until you recover. Goddess knows you need it.” As he said those blunt words that nearly made me shrink back, he gestured for me to sit beside him, and had already begun placing sausages, eggs and french toast on an empty plate.
I sat down, sighing.
“I’m fine,” I insisted. “It’s not like I did much anyway.”
“You did quite enough,” Killian’s words were calmer and more measured than I suspected Eric’s would be. Without pausing he poured a cup of herbal tea and slid it over to me gently. “WIthout you giving Alpha Caleb hints about your whereabouts, we might not have found you in time, or been prepared for whatever Eres tried to plan.”
“The bastard was thorough too,” Eric said with a slight edge in his voice. I knew a part of his pride was bruised by being unable to kill the rogue leader himself. “Who knew he even had so many men stationed? If we hadn’t managed to secure the border, it would have been over.”
“I have you both to thank for that,” I said, remembering what bits and pieces I had heard about their victories yesterday when we returned to the pack. Jacob and Sabrina had kept the pack compound safe, while Eric and Killian had ensured the border gates were secure.
Thinking of the support Caleb and I had in securing victory against two out of three rogue leaders, I resolved to find a way to appreciate them.
“We’re family, Daria. It’s what we do.” Eric said, before plopping a sliced apple piece into his mouth. “Now eat. You need to recover quickly.”
Chuckling to myself, I did as he said, changing the subject to a lighter one,
An hour later, stomach and heart full, I tagged along with Eric and Killian as they went to find Jacob.
