Daria’s POV

An hour to go before the execution of Demi. A traitor and rogue leader, her stain on her family’s former prestigious name would carry on in the history books.

I had expected to rest and contemplate my future before I was to follow Caleb to the clearing, but then he came to me, storming into the living room with his eyes full of an emotion I couldn’t quite name.

“What happened?” I stood as 1 asked, reaching out to touch his chin. He took my hand midair and grasped it tightly.

“I need your help, once again,” he sounded hesitant but certain. “Demi has agreed to give information on the last rogue leader.”

I raised my brows.

In less than an hour before she would be dead, she finally broke

“Cutting it a little close, isn’t she?” 1 let out a breath.

“She will die anyway. It’s too late for her to ask for mercy,” he said to me. “But that she agreed to give us information is more than I can ask for.”

I nodded, prrring into his eyes. There was something hanging in the air.

And it took barely a minute before I heard his words in my head, spoken through the mindlink with such clarity.

‘She demands to see you. He finally let it slip. ONLY you.”

My heart sank.

So that was what made him hesitate so.

I pressed my lips together. My stomach doing flips as I considered it. Whatever she wanted to say she would only agree to tell me. The pack, Caleb, and I myself needed that information she had.

If she wanted to see me, it was less of a grasp for power and more of a last request.

“Okay,” I softly spoke out loud, letting the weight of my singular word settle in my gut. It was uncomfortable, but there was no reluctance behind it.

He led me there himself, had given instructions to the guards.

“If you feel threatened, Daria, you don’t have to stay,’ he said, a rephrasing of the many warnings and assurances he had given over ten times in three minutes. I had counted each and every one of them.

‘I know, Caleb, I felt like sighing out loud but didn’t at the sight of his dark eyes.

Caleb left, and I alone walked to the cell, hearing every echo in the dark, damp dungeon.

“He brought you,” Demi murmured, her hoarse voice trailing to me even before I had reached her cell.

As I reached her cell I could hardly contain the horror that bubbled tk the surface.

Two guards stood beside her, holding her firmly. But the dried blood on her lips, the trail of scars on her arms, the deep cmonon from her sunken, hollow eyes that stared at me, that caused it.

Chapter 112

Gone was the innocent mask of a woman she was.

Now she looked like a monster.

“You won.” Demi hissed, before breaking off into a chuckle. It set chills down my spine. It was so full of hatred that anyone would want to run at the sound of it.

“I told you I would.” I said, keeping those thoughts behind. “Whatever you have to say make it quick. You will be dead soon”

She closed her eyes tightly like she had been slapped, then nodded.

“No one came for me,” she murmured. “Not even Eres… not even she cut myself off.

“Eres is dead.” I replied coldly.

“Of course you lot killed him,” she shook her head, but with the weight of the chains around her she was unable to. “Well, 1 hoped for too much from them. I was foolish,” she sneered. “But not anymore. The Goddess would grant me mercy to not meet them in my next life.”

“Whatever you say,” I tilted my head. “Now get on with it.”

She sighed, her shoulders slumping. Then she started to speak again.

“Your father made a deal with us,” she began. “He has longed to destroy every pack in the region. To take them as his own. He united his pack with our group for that purpose. Alpha Kingston is quite the beast. But he wasn’t strong enough to face even the Wisteria Pack on his own.”

“So he used you as his army.”

“Used us?” She laughed maniacally again. “He cannot use us. He the one being used here. Let me tell you. Daria. The true leader of this rogue group, the one in charge of us all, even Eres and I… he is darker than you can imagine. Grueler than you have ever met. If he ever gets his hands on you, he will show no mercy,”

I placed my hand on the bars.

“What’s his name?” I asked the one thing that had plagued my, Caleb’s and everyone else’s minds. “Give me a name.”

“His name is Veritas.” She stated. “But his real name, is Jamal.”

My jaw clenched. Even the way she said his name was full of fear full of reverence, full of pain.

“Thank you,” I said after far too many silent moments had passed

“Don’t thank me,” she chuckled before coughing. “I’m only giving you the pleasure of being so close to winning before he kills you all.”

Then she began to laugh again. I stared at her, thinking to myself that she was truly crazy.

She was broken beyond repair.

I had nothing else to say to her.

Bile rose up, burning my throat as I fought the urge to spit, to throw up.

Turning around, I left the cells, my feet carrying me until I was out of that forsaken place, until I had Caleb’s arms around me, pulling me into a hug. Only then could I breathe again.

Caleb stood beside me, bearing witness as he always did to such executions.
