The study was exceedingly quiet, with little sound except from the scratch of my pen against paper. I was drafting a letter to Alpha Townsend and Master Killian; it had barely been two days since the Regional Packs Meeting, but it had nevertheless been filled with moments of work, training and more work. Master Killian had left after making sure Eric was recovered from his shoulder wound enough to resume training.

I could sense he would have wanted to stay longer if not for his duties as a middleman between the Crimson Pack Alpha and

I sighed as I ended the letter and folded it expertly within seconds. Reaching for the wax seal to my right, I finished sealing the letter and stood. A yawn slipped through my lips and I covered it, feeling the weight of exhaustion upon me.

Glancing at the clock, I blinked in shock. 11pm, already?

“Fuck,” I muttered, sighing heavily.

I had realized belatedly that I had missed having dinner with Daria once again.

Thinking of my mate I couldn’t help but poke inwardly at the mind link between us. Silence ensued, and I frowned slightly.

She had gone to bed already then.

However the knowledge didn’t make me relieved; Having not seen my mate in over a day, I wasn’t foolish to deny that something was truly wrong.

It had started at Demi’s execution – her quietude, something I had wondered about then. And now, she seemed to be avoiding me.

I looked down at another half-written letter that was on my desk.

Jamal, also known as Veritas. Whoever this leader was, he seemed like the worst of them all. Daria had relayed exactly everything that Demi had said to her in the cell waiting for her execution.

But what Daria didn’t tell me was how it made her feel.

If she was scared, she kept it to herself.

If she was angry, she kept it to herself.

And that, was what made it truly unsettling.

I sighed again, the sound carrying through the study.

There was nothing much to be done about it now. It was late in the night and she was asleep.

Leaving the study, I returned to my bedroom, but not before pausing at the door of Daria’s bedroom. I could hear the sounds of her breathing through the door, slow and steady.

She was asleep.

As I had already known.

My hands twitched, itching to open the door and go to her, to wrap my arms around her body, to pull her close and inhale her warm, special scent. To kiss her and assure her that she could trust in me, that there was nothing to be afraid of because I always had her back.

Chapter 113

But not now.

Through the haze of exhaustion and a deep, nigh unquenchable longing, I forced my legs tk walk past.

Tomorrow, I decided with ease.

Tomorrow, I’d talk to her, properly. Whatever she was holding back, she didn’t have to suffer it alone.

What I didn’t expect the next morning was to open my eyes at the crack of dawn. My brows furrowed.

Something had woken me. What was….?

Suddenly I heard it, making me tense; the sound of the door opening drew my attention and I tilted my head a little before sitting up. If not for the familiar scent of Daria, I wouldn’t have been so calm.

A faint aroma of something else wafted past my nostrils and I inhaled deeply, causing my stomach to growl.

The scent of breakfast in the morning was unmistakable.

The sleep had completely faded from my eyes now.

“Hi,” Daria softly whispered, her eyes meeting mine. Her red hair was tied in a low ponytail, framing her face, her eyes were full of warmth.

“Love,” My voice was still rough from sleep. “What’s the occasion” I asked as she approached me, placing the breakfast tray by the bedside table. I couldn’t help it – my arm shot out and pulled her closer by her waist.

Her scent was even more enticing now, and as I pressed my lips to hers, I growled, aching to press her into the bed and have my way with her.

“Caleb,” she pulled away just a little but I tugged her back, our lips meeting in brief, tingling kisses. “Not now. It’s… hmmmh… it’s too early,” she sounded breathless, tilting her head back to gaze at me with dazed eyes.

“Screw that,” I replied. Then I dove in for another kiss only to have her dodge my lips and playfully slap my shoulder, her shoulders shaking in laughter,

“Honestly, you randy thing!” She huffed, despite her face flush with colour. “By the goddess, you’re going to ruin the surprise!”

Surprise?

“What surprise?” I demanded, my eyes twinkling in amusement and curiosity. “Tell me.”

“Your birthday, Caleb,” she said.

Birthday?

Then it hit me.

Today WAS my birthday.

“Ah,” I replied, a little speechless.

“I knew you’d forgotten!” She sighed and shook her head. “You’re so focused on dealing with the rogues and other matters that you don’t even bother to celebrate your own birthday.”

Even through the warmth of her voice I sensed a hint of chastising in them.

“My heart, I did forget,” I admitted.

“It’s a good thing I didn’t,” Daria shot back. “Look, the entire pack is getting a party ready in your honor.”

“And,” she leaned in and kissed the corner of my lips. “If you keep us waiting, I’ll have no choice but to punish you.”

I narrowed my eyes on her. The unmistakable hints of flirting were there, a promise of the night we’d surely have.

“For you,” I leaned in and nipped at her neck playfully. “I’d do anything. Now… let’s have breakfast.” I gestured to the tray laden with spectacular breakfast foods and a cup of steaming tea.

We were interrupted halfway through our breakfast by a maid demanding Daria’s presence in the kitchen- something she had laughed about and bade me goodbye with a promise to ‘meet you in an hour.

Therefore I finished the rest of my breakfast and jumped in the shower with more energy than I had expected. The water from the shower was scalding hot, running down my body in an endless stream until I shut it off and exited with a stream of billowing steam behind me.

By the time I’d dressed up and left my bedroom in favour of the living room, barely 40 minutes had passed.

It was as I crossed the foyer into the living room that I could hear the sounds of music outside, and I noticed it; there was an unmistakable flurry of activities right outside.

Excitement was contagious and I had begun to feel it now.

Then, a low voice cut through my thoughts of how the day would go.

“Alpha, my greetings.”

It was Callum, I turned and glanced at him bowing with his head dipped low.

“What is it?” I raised a brow at him and bid him to rise to his feet

As he did he stated his purpose, as if sending my slight impatience.

I had a birthday to celebrate.
