Chapter 126
Daria’s POV
My body burned.
The only sounds that echoed in the locked cell were the clinking of chains, still suspending me above the air like a marionette, the faint sounds of water dripping that I couldn’t pinpoint, and my heavy, drawn out breaths, each weaker than before.
I was in pain, but more than that, I was unable to do anything about it. Now, the chains were tight enough to rub terribly against my skin, and each time I moved I’d feel a sharp, abrasive sting.
Jamal, I thought with quite enough force, was the cruelest person I had ever had the guts to defy. And yet I would do it again and again. I closed my eyes, my breaths hitching as tears prickled my eyes. The image of Eric and Sabrina flashed in my mind and I felt a surge of what was akin to relief, bitter yet bold.
They were safe, I thought. If they could get help, I had to hold on. I loved that there would be a rescue.
A traitorous, taunting voice that sounded insidiously like Felicia’s asked in my head, ‘What if they couldn’t make it? What if they died? What if they aren’t fast enough to save you? Can ou handle this torture anymore?’
I swallowed, my body trembling.
I wasn’t sure.
Doubts raced in my head, which were suddenly solved to the back of my mind as a loud thud was heard. My eyes flew open and I let out a soft gasp.
Then the door opened, and someone I hadn’t expected to meet again flew in, eyes blazing. She wore a white, glamorous gown, but looked every bit the dishevelled harridan.
“You!” Felicua’s voice was snappy, snide and dark. Behind her, two guards that looked pale followed.
“Madam, Alpha Jamal has ordered us to not touch-”
“Shut up!” Felicia whirled around and slapped the guard that had said such words. The sound was a loud clap that bounced off the walls. I even winced at the force that she had used, leaving a large claw mark from the guard’s chin to his lower chin. She didn’t seem to care that she was unraveling, her state of madness visible for everyone to see. “I am the Luna here! I decide what to do! Not you!”
Her breathing was ragged, her chest heaving.
“Should be nicer to them,” My voice croaked, cracking at the end “Especially if they’re sworn to protect you.”
As soon as I said that, Felicia turned back to face me, eyes full of deep unconcealed hatred.
“You! So I underestimated you, you bitch!” She snarled, her canines elongating. However I wasn’t afraid. She was all bark and no bite, unlike Jamal that could steal the very air you breathed if you so much as looked at him the wrong way.
“What have I done now?” I asked, tilting my head. My vision grew hazy at the edges but I blinked and regained my focus. I wasn’t about to appear weak in front of her, no matter how beaten down I was. I looked her up and down, my mind whirling. What she wore wasn’t just a basic glamorous dress, it reminded me of one of the designs Sabrina and I had looked over when we were preparing for her wedding.
An ache pierced my heart, leaving a dull pang in its wake.
“You really helped those two mutts escape, didn’t you?” She raged, stomping her feet. It seemed my concentration was failing, because I could hardly listen to a word she was saying.
But it didn’t stop the puzzle from clicking into place.
Eric and Sabrina?
Those were the two she was talking about wasn’t she? That mean…
A ripple coursed through my body, tingling down my spine and easing my heart. I gasped at the sensation.
“They’re alive,” I murmured low, that no one would hear. Slowly a smile grew on my lips, hopeful and elated. “Oh, yes.”
Felicia snapped again, her eyes narrowed on my smile like it was the worst thing in the world. Her fingernails lengthened into claws and she reached for me, I barely had time to dodge, but the chains stopped her, giving a loud clank as it hit her hand. The effects of the aconitum chains were instantaneous, and her claws receded. Annoyance flashed in her eyes, but she didn’t dare try to do that again.
She pulled her hand back, her tone dripping with sarcasm.
“You should be pleased with yourself. Ruining my wedding, right when I was about to have it all!”
