Chapter 127
Caleb’s POV
I let out a breath I didn’t know I was holding. It was early in the evening, and the entire Pack was muted. I glanced out the window, my body still filled with adrenaline coursing through it By now the entire Pack knew there was war on. The horizon, and everywhere was unmistakably quiet. The streets? Mostly empty, and thanks to Jacob’s and my orders, every corner had guards stood at attention, waiting, watching.
Today was the last day, I promised myself, that such a tense atmosphere would take over the pack in such a way. By this time tomorrow, we would have returned from battle,
I sat in my study, antsy as fuck. The weight of everything, seemingly the entire world, the fate of the pack, and more, rested on my tired shoulders.
When I had then called for Daria through the mind link, it had been out of desperation, of pain, of exhaustion.
And moments later, the Moon Goddess granted my wish.
Her voice rang softly in my head and shortly after, shaking off the shock, I welcomed the warming elation that followed.
‘Love, are you okay?’ I asked, holding back the swell of emotions but just barely. I longed to see her face, to hold her in my arms. My chest ached with a need I didn’t know I had until today
There was a considerable pause, a long one that I nearly thought she hadn’t responded to at all, and that hearing her voice had merely been a figment of my imagination.
But then her voice came through again, softer and more pained
‘Caleb, I miss you so much,’ she whispered, as if she was afraid someone would hear us.
My heart sped up.
‘I’m here, Daria,’ I told her. ‘We’re coming to get you. Just hold on a little longer for me, okay? I’ll come get you, I swear it.’
‘I will. How’s Eric? And Sabrina?’ She asked, shifting the topic smoothly. I noticed the mind link was getting weaker, her voice softer and more like she was far away.
Panic hit me like a truck.
‘They’re fine, Daria. Are you okay? Talk to me, love,’ I stood, gripping the edge of the desk. Something was wrong with her, I just knew it. “Tell me what’s wrong.’
She was silent for a while and I nearly feared I’d lost her again.
…I just… Come quickly, okay? I… I think I’m just exhausted. I…’ she seemed to say something but her voice suddenly became muffled, almost nonexistent….Felicia wants. She has it out for me. And she’s here now. I found out everything’
‘What?’ I demanded. ‘I can’t hear you, love!’
‘I said, I have no idea what Felicia wants.’ She truly sounded exhausted and weak.
I exhaled slowly, unable to contain the trepidation that enveloped me.
I swore to myself that I wouldn’t let this opportunity slip by. Jamal would die by my hands, and Felicia would face the consequences of her actions.
The day turned to night, a restless one. Then morning came. Before dawn broke, I was up. I had been unable to sleep properly, my heart heavy and my mind full of strategies, of ideas of what could happen.
Even an hour was too long for me to be apart from her, and it had been a day since the truth had been revealed.
And all to gather troops.
But it hadn’t been in vain.
I emerged from the bedroom. I was dressed in all black, my countenance cold and serious. When I reached the foyer I saw Jacob and Sabrina standing side by side. And Killian had just entered with Eric.
“…think that you should focus on getting some rest. She wouldn’t want you to exert yourself either,” Jacob still seemed intent on convincing his mate to stay behind. But she, dressed in athletic wear and looking ever formidable, crossed her arms.
“Im going, Jake. I won’t rest until she’s back and safe,” Sabrina insisted. “And I can hold my own against a couple of rogues. I’m strong enough. I didn’t train for nothing.”
I knew that there would be no convincing Sabrina otherwise. And surely, Jacob must know his mate very well. Just like mine, she was incredibly stubborn.”
I cleared my throat, announcing my arrival. Jacob immediately dropped the topic of Sabrina staying behind and instead focused his attention on me.
I asked my Beta, “Is everything ready?” And he nodded.
I aimed my blow at his flank, and he neatly dodged it, but he didn’t know the second blow was coming. With one swipe he stumbled, letting out a pained yelp.
“You dare to go against us! Gerald!” Aloha Townsend was seething. We had surrounded his men now, and they made no move against us anymore.
Even a quarter of my men was enough to deal with the might of the Ligand warriors, and their Alpha clearly knew it. He stood in front, his eyes full of restraint.
Alpha Gerald however, didn’t give up.
“You’re the foolish ones here! You and the rest of the Alphas who dare to stand and fight against the Red Vale Pack!” Alpha Gerald growled, his frustration showing. “You have become puppets of the Wisteria Pack, of Alpha Caleb! Do you expect me to let that slide?!”
I scoffed openly, causing everyone’s attention to become fixed on me. Standing tall, I stared down at his wolf coldly, my body trembling with rage.
“What did Jamal and the Red Vale Pack offer you, Gerald? To lend your support for those criminals, you must have been promised a lot. What?” I sneered openly, daring him to object. “Territory? Power? More men? Resources?! What convinced you to sell your fucking soul to their dark motives?!”
He was silent briefly only to burst into laughter. There was no glee in his eyes, only bitterness.
“You may claim I’ve sold my soul to dark motives, but how honorable are yours?! Your pack, more powerful than even a handful of the rest of ours, and YOU demand our sacrifice?! Do you have no shame?! Look, I don’t give a damn! I don’t care if Jamal destroys the Wisteria Pack! But do not bring the rest of us into your damn battles!”
Alpha Townsend snapped, “You’ve doomed your pack to hell, then. And I’ll be glad to send you there myself.”
Then he charged, and I stood out of the way, watching the Alpha of Dartmouth Pack batter Alpha Gerald to the ground. I knew Alpha Townsend had been toying with the Ligand Pack Alpha before; he was a softhearted man by nature, only killing if he had a reason to.
And Gerald had angered him enough to warrant his wrath.
I didn’t spare more than a glance towards the chaotic, bloody scene, and turned to the rest of our combined forces.
“Let’s go!”
To the Red Vale Pack.
Come what may, we wouldn’t fail!
