Chapter 22

Daria’s POV

His question brought a lot of emotions to the forefront.

The primary one was frustration.

I pushed him aside creating space between us, “What do you think?” I folded my arms across my chest and tried as much as I could to ignore the fast beating of my heart.

It was just a sign of the shock fading from my system, I told myself. Nothing more.

Caleb growled again, this time I could see his canines extend as though he were in a battleground.

My hackles rose and I stepped back unwittingly. He was terrifying like that, especially since I was the one he faced off against.

“He has no right to touch you,” he began while prowling towards me.

I could hardly hold back my laughter then. A cold mirthless laugh that bore all the pains of the past.

“Is this honestly the hill you choose to die on? My Goddess, Alpha Caleb,” I shook my head. “I expected more from you. You caused this. And now you think you have a right to say who I can and can’t be with.”

“Because you’re my mine….and I won’t let anyone touch what belongs to me,” he replied.

I shook my head in disbelief, “I don’t belong to anyone Alpha Caleb.” My voice firm. “As for being your mate?” I laughed, a painful and bitter one.

“When did you ever treat me that way? When have you ever looked at me as anything but a burden?” I asked him immediately.

He fell silent. His brows furrowed slightly as I smirked at him bitterly. “You don’t have an answer do you?”

“That…” he spoke. “That was in the past, daria.”

“But that isn’t an excuse for how you treated me back then. You think apologies can fix things? Think again Alpha Caleb. And don’t forget, your darling Felicia will be yours forever. I don’t need to get in between you two to cause trouble. I’ve had enough drama in my life already,” I said. Though my body trembled from the force of his glare aimed directly at me. I gritted my teeth and pushed through it.

My pain of the past bore the scars that made me promise myself to never look back. And I hadn’t until the day he asked for my help in healing Elder Gerome.

Perhaps I needed to rethink my involvement in his matters.

The tension in the silent room rose like a tidal wave threatening to drown me. I stood firm, waiting for Caleb’s next move.

He was many things, infuriatingly unpredictable was one of the ualities I thought made him even more charming. That was until I realized I could never win against him.

“No.”

His words threw me off for a solid minute.

“No?” I repeated in confusion, in amazement at his audacity.

Chapter 22

“No, I will not accept this,” Caleb’s resolute stubbornness made my anger rise.

Who the hell did he think he was to dictate such things for me?

“It doesn’t matter whether you accept it or not Caleb,” I emphased. “It’s over and done with between us”

The door opened with a small creak before anything more could be said between us. Caleb turned just as I looked over his looming form to see Mira, the traitorous personal maid of mine entering the room seemingly unaware of whatever was going on

When she saw Caleb she paled and froze on her steps. Then heraze flickered to me and back to him.

It was obvious she was interested in whatever was going on here.

“Alpha Caleb. It’s late and I do not entertain visits like this,” I spoke out loud to get both of their attention. “Please leave I have nothing else to say to you.”

Caleb despite himself still appeared quite upset. However he didn’t dispute my words and maintained his straight and toughened posture as he turned to leave.

“This isn’t over,” his words spoke of promise. As he stormed out his words left a shiver down my spine.

I had to be careful. Even if we were theoretically working together against the spies and their unknown master, I still held the desire to leave and never return to the Wisteria Pack.

I knew that Caleb’s words of promise- rather, his threats, would haunt my dreams tonight.

“Congratulations Elder Gerome.” I spoke assuredly while I took down notes on my small pad. “You are on the edge of swift recovery.”

The room was occupied not just by him and I but also by a silent guard that stood watch by the corner. Elder Gerome’s room had been given an extra set of guards by Caleb in order to prevent any foul play.

Whoever was trying to destroy him or the Wisteria Pack by causing chaos, would have no choice but to reveal himself soon. Already the maids identified were under surveillance, and so was Beta Draco and his cousin.

Caleb was a paranoid man and I had gotten used to his ruthlessness and desire for absolute loyalty from his men and even his lovers from the little I knew. He wasn’t the type to let traitors go.

“Thank you Luna.”

My pen stilled on the paper as Elder Gerome called my former le. A title I hated so much. A title that reminded me of the unbearable torture I underwent at the packs hands.

“Don’t call me that,” I replied without raising my head to look at the elderly man with wispy silver hair amongst the few

black strands.

“But that is what you are. Alpha Caleb knows it and so do you. You are the only one who’s ever been fit to be Luna and rule by his side,” Elder Gerome’s voice was much stronger than befor It reminded me of Jacob’s, and my lips pressed together tightly to form a thin line. “I only wish we could have realized it ooner.”

“Elder Gerome, please.” I stopped him from saying any more. It he wanted to bring up the past then I would gladly throw it in his face. “You do not regret a thing. You only feel entitled to my time and care just as you felt entitled to my servitude and submissiveness as Luna. Now I’m your healer. And nothing mor Your words of apology are nothing to me and so is this pack. I can just as easily choose to leave.”

“Then why don’t you? Why did you choose to return and heal ?” He asked me
