The entire pack was in a flurry of excitement so much I could feel it. It was the first blue moon in over two years and many saw it as a sign of good things to come.
Therefore the entire pack was treating it as an important occasion. Already the pack was being decorated and meals prepared for the nighttime celebrations.
Perhaps that was why I found it easy to drop work for a few hours and engage in sparring with my subordinates. None of them could lay a claw tipped finger on me but it was still enjoyable.
Then I felt it.
A warmth that built in my chest and increased as the minutes went on. Once I had the last warrior successfully pinned underneath my grasp I turned only to see someone through the window.
Daria. Her slender figure cut an impressive look through the grandness of the arched windows.
However I noticed a look of unease on her face that made me still. Then I saw him. Beta Draco.
I don’t know what made me act but I did. Immediately I saw my Beta, I grabbed my shirt and rushed out of the private training room. I took the stairs up two at a time while cursing in my head.
Leaving Daria unprotected was one of the things I dared not do today.
After thinking it over I had begun a private investigation into Beta Draco and his cousin Damien. Their activities so far had shown evidence that there was something afoot. Secret meetings and trips out of the pack that were unregulated gave me a sense of what might have been going on. I gave him too much free time while handling all the pack matters by myself.
Reaching the floor where Daria was I rounded the corner as I heard her soft voice, unreadable but firm.
“You’ll have to take it up with the Alpha himself if you have any problems. I have no interest in dealing with you or him. The pack matters has nothing to do with me.”
“I see. However-” Beta Draco’s voice sounded more persuasive than I’d ever heard.
I didn’t bother to give a chance to even finish that statement. I strode forward.
“Beta Draco, what a pleasure it is to see you finally since you returned from your trip.” I kept my tone light and pleasant. Cutting off his words and seeing me there in such bad timing must have stunned him because he blinked once and twice. I caught a flash of his expression before it shuttered and returned to the normal placid look he kept up.
It had been a slight twitch of the lips, curling downward. His eye betrayed his annoyance, and his jaw was so tense.
“Ah, Alpha…” he bowed or rather tilted his head in a faint mockery of a bow. My eyes narrowed at him.
On a normal day I wouldn’t have thought anything of Beta Drac and his odd behavior of keeping silent in nearly every interaction I had with him. But this time I could see it. The entitlement that showed in his posture. His glance at me appeared filipant and showed a lack of expectations.
Truth was, I knew what Beta Draco didn’t like about me. It was because I was the Alpha while none of his family members could even reach the heights of my achievements.
Despite being raised mostly by the Elders as I lost my parents at young age, I had still persevered. I had climbed to the top and beat down any contenders for the position of Alpha like swating a fly with ease.

Draco’s family had been one of the founding members of the pack. By other respects he was arguably similar to royalty. The only reason he became Beta was because of his family.
Smoothly I changed the topic to one more palatable.
“I presume you’ve come to hand me the report I expected after your trip.” I continued, moving forward. My hand wrapped around Daria’s upper arm and I tugged her backwards with a gentle pull. Smoothly stepping in front of her, I ignored her gasp and stood protectively.
My mentioning the trip again was intentional. He had, after all, not informed me about the trip before leaving. And I also knew that he had stopped by a pack we didn’t have allied ties to: he Sunburst Pack, which had gotten on my bad side after they had tried to capture some of our territory last winter.
It had only taken a little push and all of Beta Draco’s dealings came to light one by one. It had been a long night sorting through a lot. And we weren’t done yet. He had long discarded his duties and that alone was punishable. It was his duty to handle a fraction of the delegates that arrived days ago. Yet it was left to me.
“I see.” Beta Draco hummed before clasping his hands together. I don’t have a written report now, Alpha Caleb. But I will give you a verbal one.”
“Good. Then we should head to my study,” I gestured down the hallway in the direction of my study and he inclined his head in agreement before following me.
Leaving Daria behind I gestured wordlessly to a shadowed corner and a guard appeared seemingly out of nowhere and moved to carry out my silent orders. From now on Daria would have 24/7 protection whenever she was in the pack.
And I hoped to convince her to never leave.
The walk to the study was short and yet filled with tense silence. Rolling my shoulders back, I reminded myself to keep my guard up and watch him for any signs.
If he was working on his own or working with someone else then it was prudent to find out at once.
“Beta Draco,” I began as soon as we were in the study. I grabbed a bottle of whiskey from my small bar. Pouring two fingers into a crystal tumbler. I poured another on a different tumbler and handed it to him. He took it and I sensed the wariness in his posture as he sat and faced me.
I gulped down the entire whiskey in the crystal tumbler I held and dropped the cup with a low thud.
“Alpha Caleb” without warning Draco began to speak readily. “I am aware I should have informed you of the trip beforehand. It was an impromptu trip and I didn’t have the time Next time this will not happen. I swear by the goddess.
A sneer left my lips. Oh now he was ready to talk.
Yet every word he said to me was nothing but excuses.
“Beta Draco,” I raised my hand to stop anything else that would leave his lips. I was running out of fucking patience at this point. “You went to visit the Sunburst pack. And worse is that you tried to bargain with them in exchange for their alliance with our pack. What makes you think you can bypass my position as the Alpha to make such decisions as that?”
He was silent again. But I didn’t care. I was ready to tear down hi silly assumptions.
“Beta Draco. You heard me. What reasoning do you have?” I demanded. “Can you defend your points in front of the entire pack? You know exactly why we do not ally ourselves with the Sunburst pack. They are nothing but thieves disguised as a civil society.”
“Alpha Caleb,” Beta Draco suddenly let his voice be known. “If we are to not ally with the Sunburst pack then who would we depend on if we are to become overrun by rogues? The Dartmoth pack and Green Pack and the other allies of our Wisteria Pack are all dependent on us for survival. None of them will liftinger to help us if it ever comes down to it. Is it such a bad idea if we can guarantee mutual support?”
