Chapter 25

Caleb’s POV

My fingers gripped Felicia’s waist like it was a lifeline.

I could hardly take my eyes of Daria.

How dare he?

My eyes burned at his hands placement, it was on her waist. They were so close to each other and I felt a deep ache in my chest and my wolf groaned in jealousy.

“Alpha Caleb,” Felicia’s purrs did little to stir my imagination like it usually did. Suddenly it all felt wrong. her perfume became too cloying for my taste, her outfit over the top.

Everything that Felicia wasn’t, Daria was.

Despite the simplicity of how she dressed there was no denying the elegance that Daria carried herself with. A quiet sort that made eyes turn no matter where she went.

The warm lights surrounding the dance floor made her red hair glow and she looked so heavenly with that sapphire gown that clung to her body exposing all her curves.

Desire swept through my body as my eyes raked her body shamelessly. But Daria didn’t seem to notice me, instead her eyes were fixed on Raul and it made my gut burn with jealousy.

How could I have overlooked her all those years when she was in evocably mine? I was so foolish then but I wasn’t about to be the same now.

The sound of howling around the arena made me pause. My ear picked it up before anyone else could and I stopped and turned my head to listen.

The howling became louder, unfamiliar and threatening. My hackles rose and I let out a low growl as Felicia stared at me in confusion.

Something was wrong.

The air became tense and I lifted my nose to the air to sniff it, something strange was here or rather, something strange was approaching us.

It was then, practically seconds later, that everyone else began to notice the strange howling.

Tension rose and immediately murmurs broke out. The music stopped while everyone in the festival looked around. It wasn’t long before a loud alarm broke out.

A bell. The warning bell at the borders of our pack.

It was an attack.

Suddenly growls filled the air and it was clear that the chaos had begun. The murmurs grew louder and louder until I broke through with a firm and clear voice,

“Everyone,” I ordered. My voice rose above the din of murmurs and they ceased abruptly. “Head to the safe houses, we will deal with this intrusion.”

Nearly as soon as I had said that the mocking voice of an unkno

“If the Wisteria pack’s Alpha thinks that he can defend you then here isn’t any problem, but we will win.”

Anger surged through me as everyone scattered in different directions. The rogues were upon us, this wasn’t a time to waste with thinking. Instead I jumped right into action and began to fight.

The warriors divided themselves strategically. To my notice Jace signaled some warriors to defend the civilians and take them to safety. I focused on tearing the throats of every rogue in my path.

A once intricately decorated arena for partying became filled with the stench of blood and the sounds of howling and growls. My claws extended as I continued my attack, many warriors flanked me and we dove through.

It was not long before many of them were dead at my feet. But had tried to use an advantage only worked for so long, now that

any were trying to escape. The element of surprise they they were in my grasp I wouldn’t let them go.

A whistle broke through the tension. A signal that the enemies seemed to recognize instantly.

The rogues all suddenly shifted into wolves and charged at me. All other warriors were left out of their sights-I was now the primary target.

I knew that if they could take me down my pack would go down with me, but the moon goddess was on my side tonight. This was MY territory and terrain that I knew with my eyes closed.

I began to weave through the forest trees and rushed towards a destination in mind. There I could take the rest of them down with no problem, their howls and growls followed me as Ian with the wind tousling my hair.

My speed was relentless but so was theirs. Once I’d gotten close to my destination I turned and tripped a wire deliberately hidden there. This forest had been my playground since when I was little and just a young pup raised by the elders. I knew every trap hidden there by my patrol team and guards, these traps would give me an advantage that would overpower their numbers.

Soon many of the wolves howled in pain as tiny little arrows were fired out of nowhere at them. They stuck out of their body. Minor injuries for most but it was enough to slow them down.

Grinning with a predatory gaze, I shifted into my wolf form.

My clothes ripped as fur covered my skin and my claws grew longer. My eyes trained on the howling and whining wolves and then I attacked swiftly.

Each and every one of their throats was summarily ripped out. My claws and jaws were stained with blood. The taste of copper in my tongue only seemed to invigorate me and I raised my head to the glowing moon in the sky to let out an ear piercing howl that shook the forest.

Suddenly a scream made my head whip towards the direction it had come from. I recognized that scream.

Daria.

She was in trouble.

My heart pounded as I burst into a run with speed that rivaled the wolves from earlier. There was no time to waste. I needed

to save her.

With a need burning in my chest I tore through the darkness ang sighted Daria being held in place by three men. She struggled as much as she could and I saw the glint of a dagger in her hand, but it was no use. They were far stronger than her and larger in numbers.

Without warning I jumped into the fray and aimed a blow at one of the men. He flew off to the side before hitting a tree trunk and falling to the ground unconscious. The rest of the roges quickly tried to run I turned to chase after them but just then-

“Alpha Caleb!” One of the warriors rushed to me. Distracted and fueled by anger I watched the two rogues swiftly get out of sight.

They had escaped.

The instigating end to the battle filled me with more frustrations the warrior reported. “All parts of the border are secure Alpha. There were little casualties.”
