“I’m fine. Just a little dazed. I don’t see why I need to rest now when people are injured and are in need of help,” I countered Sabrina’s words easily.

This wasn’t the first time she had tried to reason with me. In fact as soon as I was escorted to the pack clinic she had hovered around me like a mother hen and insisted I rest. She had noticed my injuries against all my desires to keep it hidden.

“Well maybe you should consider yourself one of the patients in need of attending to this time,” Sabrina replied just as immediately as possible.

Our banter didn’t go unnoticed by Caleb who wore an odd expression on his face. Glancing away from him my fingers twitched as they laid on my thighs.

He had saved my life once again.

A flurry of emotions overwhelmed me briefly and I shut my eyes to count downwards from ten.

I didn’t want to think more about him, but somehow everything about him kept revolving in my head- his intoxicating scent, the image of his wolf shielding me, coming to save me, and now, the way he was staring at me.

I heaved a deep breath before raising my head to meet his gaze. His eyes lingered on me, heavy with something I couldn’t decipher, making it hard to breathe. Just as I was about to speak, a familiar voice called him. “Alpha Caleb.”

It was Jacob, as expected. But my brows rose as he was carried in by two warriors who carefully laid him on the bed next to mine. I looked over at him from my spot and tried to stand to reach out to him, curiosity and a need to do my duties as a healer taking over.

“Don’t even think about it,” Sabrina’s voice snapped me out of my reverie and I looked at her. She eyed me with a knowing look and I slowly put my hands up in surrender before she relaxed. Caleb meanwhile was speaking with his friend. Once they were done talking Sabrina approached Jacob holding the tray of antiseptic and other equipment needed for suturing wounds.

“Excuse me,” she said simply and began to do her job. Jacob stared stiffly at her and I noticed his eyes glance down at her more than once.

Rolling my eyes inwardly I spoke up, “She’s okay. Let her do her job.”

Both men glanced at me as I sighed heavily and began to survey the area. At least there weren’t as many people injured as I had expected. The attack had been so sudden and if not for Caleb’s quick thinking it may have turned into a bloodbath.

My mind wandered to Raul. He had joined in the fray of fighting but I hadn’t seen him yet. Where was he?

The edges of my vision blurred slightly and the pain on my leg became more constant and difficult to stand.

Maybe I needed some rest as Sabrina had insisted.

Sighing. I was about to lay my head down and do just that when a voice made me freeze.

“Alpha Caleb Were it not for your quick thinking we might have been overrun tonight. You have our thanks, on my behalt

I shifted around to see Caleb no longer speaking with Jacob Instead he was speaking to someone else. A man with grey hair. He wore robes that looked elegant and luxurious. His eyes were unreadable and his posture passive.

Yet everything inside me screamed at me to un

I recognized that voice.

My lips parted as Caleb continued to speak with the man.

“The investigation into how the rogues entered the pack is already underway, Elder Hale. You and the rest of the council have nothing to worry about,” Caleb looked every bit the soldier and strong representation of the Alpha of wisteria pack.

But he had no idea the man he was talking to was a snake. The very same one who I had overheard that fateful day.

It couldn’t be anyone else. The voice speaking to that older maid that day had to have been Elder Hale.

My brows furrowed as I tried to remember details of the Elder from my time as Luna. I hadn’t interacted with him much specifically, my relationship with the pack and the Elders among the council members was tenuous at best.

They never respected me and thus we never had much reason to interact as much. This meant that I had no idea who I was really dealing with.

Dread pooled in my belly as I watched Caleb walk off with Elder Hale.

I’d have to find a way to pass the message on to him somehow.

The sound of a throat clearing caught my attention and once again I turned to find Sabrina sitting stiffly by my side. She bore a look that spoke of complicated emotions. My brows furrowed and I glanced at the bed next to mine, Jacob must have left while I was deep in thought.

The bed beside me was now empty like before save for the rumpled sheets and the ward was now eerily quiet as most of the pack members had been discharged.

Slowly I stood, urgency clouding my mind. I had to return to the mansion and speak to Caleb before he got tricked by Elder

Hale.

“Let’s Go,” I said to Sabrina who nodded obediently. We left the pack clinic after being waved off with thanks by the Pack doctor.

Sabrina walked beside me and I leaned against her at some points to steady myself, but I noticed her quietude which was odd.

After a few more tense moments before we reached the Alpha’s mansion I finally had enough of it.

“Alright Sabrina. Spit it out. You’ve been too quiet,” I couldn’t help but let my concern show in my voice.

She sighed heavily and mumbled something under her breath.Unable to catch it, I asked her to repeat it one more time.

Then she said it through hissed teeth.

“Jacob’s my mate okay?”

The words stunned me. Jacob, Caleb’s friend and Elder Gerome’s grandson, was Sabrina’s mate?

My wordless confusion drove her to explain.

“Actually I just found out. And I’m sure he figured it out as soon as we met just now,” She explained with frustration in her voice. “I had always thought my mate was nowhere in the pack. But to find out he was right here all along…”

She trailed off, before adding in more anger than I had expected, “And worse he’s Alpha Caleb’s friend. I cannot accept it, he’s one of those that added to your pain Daria.”

My heart clenched in pain. She was making this decision because of me?

I reached for her hand and made her look at me. Her eyes were glossy and I knew she was on the verge of tears.” You shouldn’t do that. Don’t hurt yourself just because of me.”

“This isn’t just because of you,” she insisted. “If Alpha Caleb could treat you, an Alpha’s daughter like that in marriage, then what’s to stop his friend from treating me the same way? I’m just a maid, Daria, not from a noble family. It would be hell for me and I’m not going to put myself through that.”

I was speechless. She was right. I held no love for Jacob or the Wisteria Pack. But I krew the pain of losing my mate to someone else. The pain of being treated like dirt.
