In an instant, all the warm feelings I had about him disappeared was plunged back into that night when I lost my chi

“Daria, I…”

“I’m sick of this conversation, the only reason I came back despite everything done to me was because of my passion to heal people.”

“So just stop trying… stop trying to get back with me because it’s exhausting for both of us.” I snapped at him while trying to quell the dark feelings in my heart.

“I’m not stopping! There’s a reason the moon goddess helped m find you.”

“Stop being delusional. There’s no reason. It’s too late for any sort of reconciliation.” I responded, my voice firm, “It became too late when I lost everything because of you. When I lost my-

I tried so much to compose myself with tears threatening to fall couldn’t say it. I would never give him the satisfaction of knowing the reason that I left.

His brows knitted together in confusion.

“What do you mean?”

“Nothing,” I replied simply.

“That’s not true. What were you going to say-”

“It doesn’t matter Caleb. It’s all in the past. A dark bitter past that I have no intention of reliving.”

I turned around ready to leave when he suddenly spoke up again

“Daria. At least stay until the next full moon.”

I paused in my steps.

He continued quickly as if finding something to latch onto in his words.

“Please, stay until then. You deserve to enjoy the next festival for your efforts. I promise you won’t be troubled again.”

My lips curled up into a bitter smile and I didn’t say anything as walked away.

anymore.

Returning to my room, I saw a maid was waiting there with a bulle that looked like fabric.

“What is it?” 1 demanded and she bowed to me.

“The alpha sent these for you. If they aren’t to your liking, they can be adjusted or remade.” She laid them out on the bed and I suffered upon seeing what, I thought, was mere fabric univel

The dresses were more luxurious than the clothes even left in the wardrobe Too regal for my taste. I was just a healer and didn’t have to impress anyone.

Gritting my teeth. I looked away from the dresses and told the red coldly Return them. All of them have no need for

these things.”

She was going to speak until she saw the look on my face. She bowed her head then and nodded mutely.

Once the dresses were gone. I sighed heavily and picked up my medical journal to continue documenting my treatmen procedures for Elder Gerome.

The afternoon had yet to pass by the time I finished. I was about to rest when I heard a loud screech that made me rise and rush to open my door.

Flashes of the rogues attacking filled my mind and I wondered if we were under attack again.

Tense. I stepped out onto the seemingly empty hallway and then another loud voice echoed down to me.

“You wretched bitch.”

I turned around as soon as I heard the familiar ear-piercing screech of Felicia.

“My apologies Lady Felicia,” I recognized Sabrina’s melodic voice instantly. This time she sounded stiff and annoyed under the veneer of cool politeness. “It was a mistake.”

“You stupid maid. You ruined my dress, and you call it a mistake

I opened my mouth to call out, but before I could, Felicia raised her hand. My blood ran cold as I saw her slap Sabrina on the cheek with force.

I saw red and immediately rushed to stand in front of Sabrina as Felicia raised her hand again to strike. Without giving her any warning I struck her back.

Felicia’s scream was so loud I was sure the entire mansion would have heard it. She clutched her cheek like it was the most precious damn thing in the world.

You-” she choked on her words. “You hit me!”

“And I’ll do it again,” I snarled while taking a step forward. “If you dare lay a hand on her again you’ll get what else you deserve.”

But before I could say anymore, my hand was suddenly tugged back. Sabrina hurried away and pulled me back.

Felicia was still screaming by the time that we left.

Sabrina’s pace sped up to a jog, and she called out to me, “Come on, Daria!”

I don’t understand why, but the sound of her joyful voice made me smile, and all anger faded from my body. I relaxed and followed after her, we left the mansion and I began to chase after her like we were playing tag. The wind ran through my hair like an invisible spine tingling comb. And I felt a bit better.

Once we stopped at a clearing, she let out a whoop. Her hair looked disheveled a bit too, and I wiped the sweat off my brow

“You should have seen her face,” Sabrina began to laugh, and I thought of Felicia’s expression as I had slapped her. Suddenly. I couldn’t control the mirth that filled me. It was pretty damn funy

We began to laugh, and I laughed unul I was nearly out of breath The sun’s warm glow down on us in the forest made me feel isolated from the flawed world I laid on the grass with Saba and let out long heaving breaths

“What happened back there?” asked Sabrina curiously. She reped after a few moments had passed

The chirping of the birds played a part in the peaceful forest and hence as I listened to her words

“Honestly, I don’t know. At first, I was off on my own. I had done my chores.” She said carefully. “And I was about to go searching for you so we could hang out. I don’t have many friends, you know… but then she just kind of appeared. Maybe she was out for me deliberately. I don’t know. All I know is she tipped me, And I may have made a little mistake and stained her dress.”

Thinking of Felicia, I scowled.

“It must have been deliberate. She’s a scheming woman. She’s-she’s…”

“The worst,” she finished for me.

I agreed silently. My hand found hers and I squeezed it tightly. She squeezed back.

“I won’t let her hurt you,” I promised. “Even if she tries it, I’ll make sure she pays each time. You have my word Sabrina.”

“I know. You don’t have to worry Daria,” she replied to me softly If it comes down to it, I’ve told you already. I’d rather leave the pack with you than stay and endure it.”

My heart warmed once again, and I thanked the goddess silently It was Sabrina I owed a lot, because of her help, I’d been able to leave back then and make something of myself. And she had spoken up for me in front of Caleb, so many times.

She was a dear friend who I would never betray.

Once we were ready to return, we took the long way back. Perhaps it was in anticipation of troubles to come, or a desire to avoid certain people.

There didn’t seem to be anyone waiting for us as we slipped in past the guards while talking about the next moon festival in the Wisteria Pack. I had told Sabrina of my decision to stay in the pack until the next full moon, and she was excitedly planning every bit of it.

“And the food-” She sang, which made me groan in mock tiredness. “Oh come on Daria. You didn’t enjoy much of the last one. This time we’re going to make it an event. I tell you, you’ll love it.”
