Jacob tensed beside me and I could feel his mixed emotions as he stared intently in Sabrina who had her face down.
Felicia uncle. Elder Talen had interrupted us from an important meeting and I don’t know if I was angry or to know the reason was because of Felicia’s tantrums.
The elder interrupted my thoughts with his harsh words towards Daria. “What have you the right to lay your hands on her?” He spat. his finger pointed directly at her.
Immediately, an urge to protect her took over, and I stepped forward, “That’s enough.” Felicia looked at me expectantly with a smile on her face.
I turned to him, “Is that so, elder? I believe first we have to be objective in handling this. Emotions are not useful in this
situation.”
“I agree. And whatever offense that has been committed against you, Lady Felicia,” Jacob continued seemingly reading my intentions. “I believe your station to be too high to not let go. Don’t you think so?”
Felicia’s face turned pale then red and finally an ugly shade of puce. The elder too was blustering, looking from myself to Felicia with an odd expression.
“Alpha. Caleb, it’s important we teach offenders a lesson about respect. Especially an outsider like her.”
A growl slipped from my lips before I could help myself. An outsider? Who the hell was he calling an outsider?
“Elder. I hope you are not referring to the Luna that way,” I spoke.
“Former Luna, actually.” Daria cut in with firm sounding words. Her eyes were trained on the elder and didn’t even glance once my way. “And even if I am an outsider, it doesn’t matter. I defended someone in need, and that’s all that needs to be
said.”
“That isn’t all!” Felicia snarled at her. Her cheeks were still flushed, and she turned to me now. Her eyes were pleading and desperate. “Caleb, please. Protect my honor.”
I nearly hissed at her words. She knew she was putting me in a difficult spot, but I wasn’t going to fall for it. Not this time.
“Then instead of making a scene, we should be diplomatic about it,” Jacob suddenly jumped in again. His voice was calm and collected. I didn’t bother speaking and let him take the lead. “Heller Daria was the one to help us in our fight against the rogues. In fact, she handled a risky operation and nearly got herself killed for us. That and her treatment of Elder Gerome, my grandfather, demands a little mercy. Don’t you think so, Elder Talen?”
He parted his lips as if he wanted to say something but closed it thoroughly given Daria a safe defense.
I glanced at Felicia, she looked resigned but furious.
am certain he had nothing to say, not when Jacob had
When Elder Talen finally spoke again, it was with a warning in voice, “Your reasoning is admirably sound, Beta Jacob, Very well. We will leave this matter for now. But I hope you unde stand there are some lines we shouldn’t let anyone cross
ellect badly on our pack while she’s here” Alpha Caleb, please take the lead on this Healer Daria’s actions ustn’t
I smiled without any hint of joy in my eyes I was used to theatrom others, so I took this warning in stride.
“I understand Elder Talen Frederick!”

“Escort Elder and his family to their home.” I said in a light tone. Frederick bowed again in acknowledgment of my orde and led the lot of them away.
Felicia glanced back at me and then at Daria with a darkened expression as she was left trailing behind her family.
Letting out a sharp exhale, I muttered a curse word under my breath that none but Jacob heard.
“Thank you, Alpha Caleb,” I turned around at the sound of Daria’s voice. “And Beta, Jacob, for
your help.”
She sounded reluctant to thank us, but did it anyway with a Stoic tone. I nearly smiled at how fierce she looked, even though she was sure I didn’t mean any harm.
Baby steps, Caleb.
I smiled broadly, schooling my expression carefully into a welcoming way. I’d heard many times from my previous lovers that I appeared even more charming when I had that look on my face.
And to win Daria’s heart, I needed every advantage that I could get.
“No need to thank us,” I replied smoothly. “It’s part of our duties to you.”
“Exactly.” Jacob concurred. He was staring straight at his mate, who looked away uncomfortably.
