“That damned bitch,” were the words that left Sabrina’s mouth the moment we got to my bedroom. Her growls had been low and rumbling since she had met me at the front door. Her murderous eyes had burned through just about every spot on the carpet on the way here.

I closed my eyes and didn’t even bother to respond. I agreed. Bu I couldn’t voice out how I felt through the tangled web of

emotions.

“Damn her,” sabrina cursed with seething rage. She let out a yell and slammed her hand on the table.

I sat by the edge of the bed and clasped my hands.

“It’s alright,” I spoke quietly. “There’s no need to be so upset when it’s already happened. Goddess knows I should be upset right now.”

It all felt like a blur now. A terrible and numbing blur that could have come out of one of my nightmares.

My hand moved up to touch the cut on my cheek and I winced. Even though it had healed a little it was still very painful.

Had the whip been coated in wolfsbane or something?

Standing I reached to take my medicine bag and brought out an ointment. I raised the hand mirror to my face and applied the cream in a daze. The cut was red and angry on my skin. My thought was correct. I was lucky to not have been struck worse than this or I’d be likely sporting a wound on my face that would take weeks to heal.

It was when I was about to tug my top down to apply the ointment against my beck that I noticed. The leather jacket and it’s warmth. Caleb had left it with me.

Thinking of him made me let out a deep sigh and I sat back down on the bed. I removed the jacket and under Sabrina’s watchful gaze handed it to her.

“Please return this to Alpha Caleb for me. I’d rather not do it personally.”

She took it without resounding. She knew the reasons why and wasn’t about to argue with me.

However it didn’t calm me deep down. The unsettling sensation was like a frog hopping around in my gut. Unable to relax I decided to ask, “How was your day?”

Sabrina’s face instantly changed and shifted to a show of guilt. I was mildly surprised as she shrugged and pursed her lips.

“I got dismissed from my duties.”

My brows rose as I stared at her. Dismissed?

To most it wasn’t a good thing for a maid to be dismissed from eir duties. It meant that the maid had either left out of necessity or committed a crime. Neither were nice implications.

“Explain.” I told her in an order more or less. I didn’t need to was too long for the pleasant and unsurprising explanation.

“Actually,” She wrung her fingers together and appeared defensi “Beta Jacob decided to approach me when you were out. We talked and I don’t know really”

She looked flustered Her checks sported a reddish hue that was there before and she was studiously avoiding my gaze. Even without my sharp senses to detect her sped up heartbeat

“I see.” I broke the silence that ensued before. I didn’t know what specifically I felt to hear that. But I didn’t want to make her feel bad. My problems with Caleb and the pack had nothing to do with her bond with Jacob. “Congratulations Brina.”

“But we haven’t decided yet. I haven’t agreed to anything.” Sabrina wuickly began to assure me even as her face got even redder and resembled a ripened peach. “Beta Jacob promised that I wouldn’t have to marry him so quickly. He said he would wait until I was ready.”

A chuckle left my lips. If Bets Jacob had said that sincerely then he must truly like my best friend.

Thinking about how he had begged me to convince Sabrina before then I had an inkling he was being true to his heart this time.

A song pricked my heart but I ignored it as I moved to clasp my best friends hands. She stared at me with wide eyes as I squeezed her hands gently with mine.

“You have nothing to explain to me Brina. You’re perfectly fine. And I know Beta Jacob wouldn’t dare to treat you badly. Not when he knows I’m going to ruin his life if he does,” I added the last part with a dark smirk.

She grinned at me.

“I told him that I’m planning on leaving with you if I find out it isn’t worth it,” She confessed sheepishly.

I let out a giggle at how her face contorted into a mock horror.

“He got on his knees to beg me, Daria.”

“Good. If he hadn’t then I’d have disapproved entirely,” I replied simply.

Our eyes met.

We dissolved into a fit of giggles with absolutely no idea why. For some reason it made me happy to see Sabrina’s face light

and no longer as upset as it should have been.

I wasn’t used to making friends or keeping them. It was why I’d gotten deceived by Raul in the first place. But in Sabrina I truly knew I had found a friend for a lifetime.

The knock on the door startled us. It was nearly an hour since we had gotten to my bedroom. And when Sabrina called out for whoever it was to come in, the door swung open to reveal a maid holding a tray with two bowls of soup and a plate of pastries.

The scent of the pastries’ sweet and airy aromas wafted around the room. Then my stomach growled without thinking.

“Oh goddess,” I murmured unhelpfully while patting my stomach gently.

“Alpha Caleb and Beta Jacob send their regards, Healer Daria, Ms Sabrina,” the maid bowed and Sabrina looked shocked as she left without a second glance.

That’s the first time I’ve ever been bowed to before,” Sabrina’s ice was hushed and amazed. I rolled my eyes and reached to pull her towards the mouth watering lunch.

“You better get used to it as the mate of the Beta,” I quipped im tiently. I didn’t know I was so hungry before

But after polishing off the entire bowl of chicken, beef and tom soup I was sure that part of my anger had completely been because of my stomach

But I knew that she could do it. Sabrina wasn’t the type to be easily bossed around. Not like I had been back then.

The warmth of the late afternoon made my limbs heavy and my full stomach felt so comfortable. Relaxed and healing from the minor injuries I’d had, I drifted off into a peaceful sleep.
