Instead I nearly ran face first into Jacob at the foyer. He looked gim but his lighthearted expression returned as he saw me.
“Hey,” he greeted me and I nodded in response. “Where are you off to?”
“The pack clinic.” I kept the pleasantries and small talk short. We weren’t friends after all.
His eyes seemed to spark as soon as I mentioned the destination and he nodded slowly.
“Alright, I need to see Caleb. Catch you later,” Jacob seemed to be in a hurry as much as I was and I briefly had a stirring of curiosity in my veins and wanted to ask him. But I didn’t.
I wasn’t going to give into the urge. Turning away I left the mansion and moved quickly in the direction of the pack clinic. The air was heavy and I suspected rain might fall.
I passed by several members of the pack early this morning. The sun had risen but it was still quite chilly and a breeze ran it’s way through my hair as I sped my walking.
Many glanced at me. I knew that I had unwittingly become the center of attention. This time though I wasn’t going to apologize.
The times that whispers would ring out behind my back when I was Luna briefly surfaced in my mind but I shut that thought down as quickly as it came. Not now. I heard some murmurs as I slipped away and entered the pack clinic, but I wasn’t about to pay attention.
The pack doctor was speaking with an apprentice I recognized from before. His brows were knitted together in confusion and he held a folder in his hand. My curiosity was piqued and this time I listened and approached them.
“…autopsies cannot be done too quickly. Have the Beta come to see me by dinner time, we may be able to sort this out,” the pack doctor spoke in a low tone. But I was able to catch it and I had my surprise appropriately.
An autopsy?
Deaths in the pack weren’t abnormal outside of battles with rogues or other packs. But autopsies were rare. It was usually used when there was murder involved that wasn’t conclusive. Many families preferred to not have one done on their late
relatives.
“Doctor,” I greeted and they both turned to look at me. The apprentice bowed and took a step back while allowing the pack doctor to straighten up and address me.
“Healer Daria, Thank you for coming so early today on my request,” He said with reverence.
“It’s alright. If I may ask, what happened?” I gestured to the file.e handed it to me and I opened it.
The patient’s name was Sara Green. Pretty. The same age as I wa
“What’s the problem?” I asked with a raised brow. I didn’t get the point.
He let out a deep breath and gestured to the last line on her fold Recently written, the status has been changed. The word ALIVE had been struck out and beside it was written DEAD
“The Beta wishes for us to run an autopsy on her. She died early his morning from what we can tell. He wants results by this afternoon” the pack doctor linally said

That was why he looked worried.
Running an autopsy so quickly and in such a short time frame wasn’t always easy. It took precision to organize and handle The task that Jacob had given him was likely impossible to finish by noon.
“I had told him it was like asking for the full moon to arrive right this second. I told him he had to wait, but he insisted on it being done quickly. We don’t have murders like this in the pack he sounded exhausted and anxious all at once. I could understand and I nodded in commiseration.
“That short a time would be difficult if it was one person. I can help.” I offered and handed the folder back to him. It was like I’d handed him a precious gift by the way he reacted. His eyes lit up and he smiled in gratitude.
A slight irritation rose up in me and I couldn’t for the life of me understand why it just happened. Before he could say so much as a word I cut him off asking, “Where’s the body?”
He led the way and I followed after him. We walked as he talked about the state the body was found in. His words were as hurried as his steps and it took every bone in me to not shout at him to slow the hell down or at least have some patience.
I couldn’t deny it. He was excited and likely because he hadn’t gotten the chance to do an autopsy in years at least.
The way to the morgue was filled with the chattering of his apprentices. Two of them filed in after us and we ended up getting at least half of them in the morgue with us.
My work brain took over once I had my gloves on and began my work alongside the pack doctor. I moved slowly and methodically like I had done it a thousand times before. Autopsies weren’t my forte but I had put myself to study each part of medicine so deeply that it was ingrained in my head even if I was asleep.
We worked in silence with nary a breath. Only once in a while would I call out in a low voice for an equipment and it would be handed to me within seconds.
It put me in a meditative state a little. That was, until we heard the sounds of growls and yells faintly from outside.
I raised my head having heard it first. The words I had been saying to the pack doctor became forgotten and he noticed the sounds then too.
It was one of the apprentices who went outside and offered to find out what the problem was. But in less than a minute he returned with wide eyes full of anxiousness. I knew then that something was wrong.
“Come,” the order left my lips seamlessly like I was the one who was the apprentice’s master. I peeled off the gloves I had worn and tossed them into the trash without a second glance and rushed out to the ward. They followed behind me and even the pack doctor let me take the lead this time.
Once I arrived at the ward I had to stop for a few seconds to get hy bearings. The noise there was telling. But so was the unmistakable scent of mud, grime and blood.
Striding forward I grabbed another set of gloves and pulled the on. The people who had come in were clearly warriors and their uniforms looked similar to those of patrol guards. The injuries were unusual and only meant one thing.
“Damn rogues, one of them grunted with a growl. His arm was twisted in a direction that wasn’t normal and blood stains on his shirt told me his condition was severe. Many of them groane and looked pale from the blood loss.
A foreboding feeling bloomed in my chest while I worked methically. At some point Sabrina and some others had come in and we all set about getting the warriors stitched up Several them were cleared to be discharged tonight but a handful
still were severely injured.
By the time I was done with most of the work and wiping my brows the familiar musk of Caleb hit my nostrils and I inhaled sharply.
“Alpha Caleb the park doctor announced as if I hadn’t felt his sence already I stuftened
