“You seem a little distracted.” she said and I frowned slightly. Her words carried a meaning underneath the mild statement.

“I’m just a little tired is all.” I replied. I glanced back briefly at Caleb and found his gaze was directed at me this time.

A searing heat rushed through my face and I looked away.

“Daria.”

Sabrina reached out to touch my arm.

“I’m fine Brina. You don’t have to worry about me.” I sighed, but before I could speak again someone else did.

“Daria.” It was Caleb. He was much closer than before and had a look of grace seriousness on his face. “Can we talk?”

I found myself speechless and Sabrina instantly shifted her gaze between the two of us. There was a heavy atmosphere and an expression of understanding crossed her eyes as she nodded slowly and bowed to Caleb. It was an uncharacteristic subservience that I hadn’t seen from her towards him in a long time.

“Of course Alpha Caleb. I have to return home too,” She stated and gave my arm a gentle squeeze before stepping away.

I sighed inwardly as Caleb’s entire attention was focused on me. His eyes were broodingly handsome yet so intense that I couldn’t help my heart skipping a beat.

“What is it?” I asked him.

“The pack doctor has informed me you were the main one treating the warriors,” he started and gestured for us to walk outside. I followed as he slowed his usually long and quick strides to match mine. Eddie by side it felt like he regarded me with respect and as an equal unlike before. “So I suppose I should thank you.”

“You don’t have to thank me Alpha Caleb. I’m a guest here and it’s my duty to exercise my rights as a help.” I explained calmly.

He chuckled, an explicitly thrilling sound that made something shift inside me pleasantly.

“I know that you being here isn’t pleasing to you either. But your help has been nothing short of a blessing. Everyone’s grateful to you for your help and so am I. he continued.

It felt like he was saying something else while meaning another. Bly brows furrowed as I contemplated what I should say next. Whatever it was that was on his mind… it would eventually come out anyway.

We were now exiting the pack clinic. In my work I’d forgotten the time. Seeing the sun glow golden in the sky made me realize how long I’d been in there and like a signal my stomach growled.

Caleb paused and turned to look at me as I placed my hand over my face briefly to hide my embarrassment.

“Hungry I see,” he said. Despite his innocent sounding words I detected the amusement in his eyes and voice.

“In my defense I have been too busy. I forgot to have something before now,” I spluttered out while my cheeks continued to heat up.

“Alright. Let’s have lunch together then. I haven’t had anything to eat either.”

Caleb’s offer was loaded and I didn’t know if I wanted to spend another couple of hours with him again. Instead of accepting his offer I shook my head and resolutely looked away from him

“There’s a lot more work for you to do than to keep me company And I don’t think-“I cut myself off before I could ever off onto a more personal territory

But his eyes narrowed on me then. Even without saying anything I knew he could tell what I was trying to imply

That we couldn’t be in the same place together for long

You can’t avoid this forever,” he finally said before looking away I was mildly shocked by his blase reaction. I had half expected him to fly into a rage and insist that I couldn’t refuse high like many times before.

This was different.

What had happened to him?

I was stunned and nodded slowly before turning and walking away from him. He didn’t make a move to draw me back. Left to my own devices I decided to make a stop at the farmers market.

I hadn’t gone there in a while and needed to find some food. So there I went. The familiar paths blended together with my memories of the past. But this time, as the eyes of everyone turned to me over time while I browsed the food stalls, I didn’t feel like hiding from fear of judgement.

I eventually ended up purchasing some fried dough sticks that were coated in some sugary cinnamon powder, as well as some meat that was well seasoned and fried to delicious long crisps.

Turning to get a drink at the next stall I heard a small voice.

“Luna Daria.” the title made me stop in my tracks and I glanced over my shoulder. There was a woman who was tall and attractive. Her piercing eyes spoke of experience and her clothes seemed luxurious.
