My pace was steady as I worked, my hands unwavering and gaze lickering from one herb to another, one tool to another. It was a practiced case I was used to, a testament to how much I ha learnt over the years.
The Elder slept peacefully and I relished in the silence.
Until the door opened.
“Healer. How is he?” I turned around in slight surprise. My tense muscles relaxed a little, but only a little as I recognized the man before me to be one of Caleb’s closest friends.
He seemed to regard me with polite indifference, brows knitted in worry as he looked over my shoulder to the patient who was blissfully unaware.
“He’s fine. At the very least he’s resting a lot better now.” I replied
Elders like him were old and needed more care than usual. Because of his involvement in many pack activities it had been possible that stress was the trigger for this breakdown.
If he woke up and recovered fully there would be a chance of him being in this situation again.
Still I kept that thought to myself.
“I see. Thank you,” He said, taking a seat beside the elder.
I looked away. He was one of the people who had not helped me when I had been pushed aside for Caleb’s lover in the past. He hadn’t lifted a finger to defend me. I had no intention of being extra nice to him.
I could feel his gaze on me as I placed the tincture of essential oils in my wooden chest.
He heaved a deep breath before speaking up, “I am ever grateful for your help, Luna.”
LUNA.
My heart pricked and I grit my teeth at the flood of memories that pushed through my stoic reserved impression.
“Don’t call me that. That’s all in the past,” I shot back.
He looked at me and for a moment, I saw an expression that both angered me and satisfied me. Guilt.
For the first time someone actually seemed to understand just how much I had gone through in this pack. But I wasn’t moved.
“I’m sorry,” he bowed his head and a flicker of shame passed thugh his eyes.
If I were any weaker, I’d have apologized for my outburst so quickly. But it wasn’t the last and I was no longer that woman. Caleb had changed me. He had morphed me into a monster wh had lost too much to remain a pushover
My child’s life had been stolen from me. My heart along with it
“Your words mean nothing to me,” I finally spoke and each word was targeted to pull more of that guilt and shame from his body. I wanted him to drown in it.
Since Caleb wasn’t here and didn’t feel any shame in acting like othing had happened, his friend would be a barely suitable replacement for the time being.

“I know I don’t deserve your forgiveness. But you have always been Luna as far as Caleb is concerned. He has had no other woman considered for the role but you.”
The mention of Caleb made my stomach twist, I didn’t need to ear his name.
“Don’t mention him again. I have had enough of this conversation. I cut in before he could say any more.
“And as far as the position of Luna is concerned, he can screw himself. I don’t care what he wants”
Silence reigned in the aftermath of my words. I pursed my lips and turned away to leave the room entirely.
The hallway was quiet but my ears could pick up the sounds of bustling activities right outside. It must be another event at the Pack.
I remembered how Caleb, always made sure to entertain delegates from neighboring packs no matter how far or close, big or small, with the same level of fervor. He took his duties seriously. And that was one of the things I loved about him.
My hands clenched, and I began to walk down the hallway. The last memories blended into the present as each way I looked held nostalgia.
But that all changed suddenly when I turned the corner, colliding with someone who screamed out like a banshee. Her voice was just as grating as it was familiar and every bone and muscle in my body froze into a standstill.
Oh Goddess.
Of all the people I had to bump into, why did it have to be her?
“You damn bitch,” Felicia’s voice was poised like a physical knife about to stab me and bleed me dry. “You planned this didn’t you? You tried to attack me.”
I blinked, the absurdity of it all making me laugh bitterly. Did she think that my life revolves around her and Caleb? Did everyone think so?
“I suppose you never really had the sense to think outside your own life,” the words left my lips in a sarcastic tone before I could stop myself.
Her face turned pale first then I watched as it turned to a deep shade of red.
Satisfying.
