It was dinner time when I got to see Caleb again. I still had a lot of questions on my mind that made me restless. I wished to ask Caleb what exactly made the Elders of the pack so riled up that they would bring arguments to his door. I also longed to ask him about the intruder. I needed more information on the person who had been caught and to know if it matched the person who sent me that note.

But all that couldn’t be answered if I didn’t go to dinner.

I hesitated at the door leading into the more private dining room. Since Caleb wasn’t entertaining guests it turned out that he had ordered for dinner to be moved into the much smaller and intimate space.

It should have been a good thing seeing as I was hoping to softer Caleb enough to make my requests to see the prisoner on my own. I had even worn one of the many luxurious gowns he had outfitted my wardrobe with. It was a blue number, floor length gown with a fitted skirt and flared petal sleeves that framed my shoulders perfectly. I hated how much I liked it.

I had half expected someone else to join us at the table. But as I walked in after hyping myself up, I was speechless to see only Caleb seated at the smaller round dining table. The decorations weren’t any less intricate and luxurious though.

As soon as he raised his gaze to meet mine head in I nearly stopped in my tracks. Suddenly this felt less like a normal dinner and more like a date of some sort. I swallowed and tried to not let my mind go to the kiss that we had shared this afternoon. It was a mistake. At least that’s what I told myself.

“Alpha Caleb.” I greeted softly as he stood and suddenly pulled out a chair for me across from him. I didn’t bother rejecting even though I wanted to. I had to give in order to get what I wanted. And if it was my obligeance that he needed then he would get it.

“You look beautiful tonight,” he murmured with his breath so close to my ear. A shudder ran through me and I inhaled sharply at the warmth of his breath fanning my ear. Unwittingly felt warmth on my cheeks as well and I knew I was turning as red as a tomato.

It’s just dinner, Daria.

Just dinner…

Right.

I cleared my throat as he took his place across from mine and the maids placed the dishes laden with aromatic foods.

“Thank you for the compliment,” I stated in reply to his previous words that had set my heart racing. He smiled charmingly in a way he never had at me back when we were married. My heart clenched and I shifted uncomfortably. I had to take charge of the situation somehow. I kept my tone stoic and as unfected as I possibly could. “But it wasn’t needed at all.”

“Of course you’d say that,” he chuckled and shook his head. I waed for the moment to pass and I took a bite of the steak soaked in delicious chili. “Alright love. Out with it. What do you want to ask?”

Surprise ran through me and I patted my lips. But he got to it before I spoke.

“You didn’t come here dressed like that just for fun”

His offhand comment made me blink before I smiled sardonically

“At least you know that Alpha Caleb For your information I have a few questions and a rewiest of sorts.

“O” He raised a brow fur didn’t say any more. I nodded and to another bite of my meal. It was simply exquisite, moist and tender and spicy and just absolutely delicious.

Swallowing the morsel I spoke again, “I want to know what happened this afternoon with the Elders. It had to be about the rogues, didn’t it?”

“It wasn’t actually. It was more to do with your father.” Then he tied his head. “You don’t have to worry about it. It has nothing to do with you, however much they try.”

I longed to know more and I leaned forward.

“You shouldn’t keep me in the dark Alpha Caleb. I told you this before-”

“Even if it’s for your own protection?”

“Especially then,” I shot back in reply.

“Fine. Goddess knows I can’t control you anymore,” he muttered

My eyes narrowed threateningly at him.

“Apparently they believe you have something to do with the decision to end the alliance.” I was silent at that. He immediately jumped to add. “And it’s not so. You may have been a catalyst but I would have ended this alliance either way. Alpha Kingston has always been a fucking thorn in my neck.”

He said the last part in a low growl.

“I’ll believe that as long as you don’t keep anything else from me I muttered under my breath.

Meanwhile my mind whirled. So the elders were pointing finger at me.

That much was clear. And they had stormed to Caleb’s door to do… something.

Suspicions rose in me but I quashed them at once. It couldn’t be that there were more traitorous Elders in the pack could there?

I felt there was nothing more to say in the matter so I changed the subject entirely.

“Then I have a request I have to make,” I broke the silence again He raised his head to look at me. Our meals were finished and the maids were taking them away to replace them with bow of sweet custard dessert.

Until the last maid had left and we were alone I didn’t say a word

“Alright love. What is it you wish to ask?” He asked me once the door had shut.

“The person that was captured earlier today. I want to see him.”

“Absolutely fucking not,” came the immediate answer.

“That’s not negotiable. You can’t refuse-”

“Yes I fucking can Daria,” he stood abruptly and moved around the table towards me. I stood as well, feeling tiled up

We were barely inches apart.

“You care to tell me why you wish to put yourself in danger on again?” He demanded and I scoffed openly

Don’t tell me you’re worried about me I mittened in response was laughable

“And what if I am? He leaned in closer

His scent invaded my senses like nothing had ever felt before it was terrible Terrible how much the longing rose in

my throat and my gut couldn’t stop clenching in anticipation.

“You Shouldn’t be.” My voice was barely a whisper. I was pleading with myself to pull away. To give myself a reason to hate him at this moment. And honestly I did. I HATED him. But that was not the ONLY thing I felt.

I was hardly aware of the flickering of the candlelight or the souls of crickets outside the window, or even the maids that waited right outside at the door for us to finish our meals.

All I was aware of was him.

“You’re driving me crazy,” Caleb suddenly murmured. He breathed in and out deeply and I watched the bare skin of his neck as his chest heaved. I swallowed as he raised his hand to cu my cheek.
