“Send the injured to the pack clinic. Bring me the reports tomorrow. And, take more men to secure the borders tonight.”
As I spoke, my mind worked fast. Repairs on the eastern border gates would have to be carried out immediately. Facing an onslaught of attacks from rogues, it wasn’t a good thing to let things lie for long.
Demi shifted in my arms, and I refrained from showing any discomfort, as Daria approached me. I saw Sabrina was also at the front of my mansion, watching with a furrowed brow. Despite Demi being a long-time friend, I wasn’t about to let anyone misunderstand the situation. The fact alone that I had carried her all the way back to the pack left room for gossip.
“Caleb,” Daria greeted me, her voice full of warmth. But I could read the questions in her eyes. “How was the eastern border?” She asked.
“We managed to get there on time, thank the Goddess,” I replied. As I spoke I moved towards the front door. Sabrina bowed to me, murmuring, “Alpha Caleb, welcome back.” I nodded at her in response. Meanwhile Demi pressed her body against mine, murmuring a small greeting. Her voice was soft as she spoke. And the innocence in her eyes was clear as she looked at everyone. She was surely the center of attention now, and I was along with her.
Sabrina suddenly gave Demi a short glance, before turning to her best friend.
“I have to return home. I’ll visit tomorrow, okay?”
Daria smiled at Sabrina, waving her friend off. With one final bow to me, Sabrina turned and left, moving down the street with a guard and her maid flanking her.
We entered the mansion, and I saw Daria’s gaze turn from warm to unreadable as she glanced down at Demi again who was still in my arms. That alone set off alarm bells in my mind. I knew that I was already treading a thin line with her. I just got Daria back; I wasn’t about to lose her again to my actions.
Thinking of how this looked I resolved to myself, I would explain to her later. Turning to one of the guards I moved to set Demi down atop the couch. She whimpered a little and her hand clung to mine.
“Send for the pack doctor,” I ordered as I gently set Demi down to sit. Carefully I removed her hand from my arm and straightened, rubbing my arms. Demi had insisted that I carry her, not trusting any of the other guards and being unable to walk herself, I decided to humour her a little.
“Yes Alpha,” the guard bowed and rushed to do my bidding.
However, soon Demi whimpered again, and her eyes were filled with tears.
“It hurts, Caleb… Oh Goddess, I hope the doctor comes fast.”
I opened my mouth to calm her down but suddenly Daria spoke up from behind me

“I can look over her injuries if you want,” her voice was calm, yet I sensed an edge in them that was punctuated by the slight stabbing sensation in my chest.
Unable to refuse I gazed into my mate’s eyes and slowly nodded, letting her take the lead. She turned to a maid and said, “Get me my medicine box. It’s on my desk.”
Then she moved to my side and slowly bent down to reach for the ankle that looked slightly inflamed. The skin was red around the ankle and Demi trembled. Her fingers twitched and once more she reached for me. But this time I sidestepped her. It wouldn’t be a good look for me to hold another woman in the presence of my mate.
Glancing at Daria, she was staring at Demi’s fingers which she had just tried to use to touch me. Her eyes were filled with an unreadable, sharp emotion that I knew I would have to address this with her properly.
I was already deep in a hole with the Felicia situation. I didn’t want this to be another problem.
“How is it?” I asked Daria; making her turn towards me. Her expression cleared and she spoke, tone objective and professional.
“It’s just a small sprain. She should avoid walking on it for a while. With our constitution she will be fine by tomorrow.”
She dropped Demi’s foot gently.
“B-but it hurts so much,” Demi’s voice trembled, her face flushed now more than ever. “Are you sure this is really a small sprain? I feel so much pain. Maybe we should wait for the pack doctor.”
guarantee you,” Daria raised her brows. “That I am more than capable of determining these things. I am a Healer myself.”
“But the pack doctor would be more experienced in knowing the level of damage, right? No offense…” Demi insisted with a wary gaze.
Sensing things were becoming tense, I stepped in, placing my hand gently atop Daria’s shoulder. Her body relaxed a little.
“Daria is one of the most accomplished Healers in the region. There’s nothing for you to worry about,” I said. “And she is my mate. Out of everyone in this world, I trust her.”
For a second, I saw Demi’s eyes flash with an emotion, but before I could ascertain what it was she lowered her head, her dark straight hair falling over her pale, pretty face,
“Okay… If you say so. I’ll just rest a little then Healer. Thank you,” She murmured softly, sounding as if she was going to cry.
“That would be best,” Daria reached to open her medicine box and brought out a roll of cloth bandages, “I will secure it so you can be assured.”
Once all that was taken care of, I had a maid and a guard help her to a guest bedroom prepared for her. She constantly turned to glance at me, her doe-eyes making her appear incredibly pure and soft like a dove. At some point she mouthed, “Thank you’, and I nodded in response.

I turned and saw her brows were knitted; her lips pressed together. Reaching for her, I pulled her closer, my arms around her waist as I pressed a kiss to her forehead.
