Caleb turned to me reassuringly, though his smile didn’t reach his eyes- instead there was a stormy look in them.

“You don’t have to worry about it,” he said.

“I’m not worried. But what could make them summon you like this?” I wondered aloud.

“Well whatever it is, I will find out.” he straightened, looking ever the confident, inscrutable Alpha with an edge no other person in the pack had.

I nodded to myself, thinking that it likely had something to do with the rogues.

Knowing that I couldn’t do much to help the situation now, I relaxed against his hold and leaned up to press a soft kiss against his chin.

He didn’t respond outwardly, but his arms around me became tighter, and I caught sight of his Adams Apple bobbing.

Feeling his scent wash over me protectively, I realized that for the first time ever, I didn’t feel an empty voice in my chest anymore. That sensation of having something missing, of not being able to reach my destination… was completely gone.

“Youre tempting me again, love,” He murmured and his chest rumbled with his spoken words. There was a warning in them, but more than that there was warmth in his voice, tinged with an emotion that I couldn’t quite decipher, but it made my heart skip.

How was it that in such a short time I could go from forgiving him to being by his side again?

Was it the mate bond, or just the fact that I had never stopped loving him?

That thought kept wandering in and out of my focus throughout the rest of the day.

And when I woke up early the next morning, it was to a fuzzy feeling in my chest as I laid in bed with Caleb embracing me tightly.

I groaned softly, knowing that I had to be up before dawn. Another day of training was just what I needed to get stronger.

“I didn’t see you at dinner last night,” Eric stated, as we did a little light sparring. Light, in his own mind, at least, because while he sounded and looked just fine and leisurely trading blows with me, I was dying on the inside.

His question sent a slight jolt down my chest and I recalled how Caleb had insisted on having the evening to ourselves. I had obliged him, and one thing led to another…

Guilt made my stomach lurch a little. He was alone in the pack, with not even his mate Killian around him, and it was all for my sake.

“I’m sorry,” I said, panting as I dodged another blow and hit behind a nearby treetrunk briefly to gather my thoughts. “Caleb and I-”

He cut me off roughly, not even bothering to continue sparring, his hands clenched.

“You don’t have to explain yourself, Daria. You realize his mark is on your neck.”

Without thinking I swiftly raised my hand to cover the spot on my neck. It had been half-hidden by the shirt I wore, and I hoped he wouldn’t notice. How wrong I had been.

“So you two are together now,” Eric continued. I nodded, and he sighed, shaking his head.

“He’s changed, Eric,” my voice sounded a little pleading, knowing he was simply worried about me.

“I don’t think you should trust him,” he insisted still, and I pressed my lips together.

“I know you don’t like him, but he’s trying his best now. I didn’t want to admit it before… but Eric, I love him. I can’t bear it if I don’t give him a chance to prove himself.”

He didn’t say anything else but i did notice the discomfited expression he bore.

In an effort to change the subject, I charged at him, aiming a blow at his head. He dodged, without even looking. I smiled to myself, my heart pounding.

The training continued for another hour before we finally returned – exhausted and body limp – to the

mansion.

As soon as we entered, a guard handed me a note, and my brows furrowed.

“Alpha Caleb left this for you,” the guard explained, and my lips quirked up at the corners slightly. Eric scoffed and walked past, raising his hands.

I unfolded the small note to find a few words.

‘On my way to the meeting. Stay safe, love.

My fingers traced the elegant script he had written. The ink still smelled fresh. Had I just missed him?

Wondering how the meeting with the Elders would go, I returned to my bedroom to have a much needed bath.

Only after emerging from the steamy bathroom did i feel more relaxed. Instead of a shower, I had the maid draw up a bath. The hot water had soothed my sore muscles, and the scent of the floral shampoo and body wash trailed after me, lingering on my skin.

Sabrina would be coming for breakfast, so I dressed quickly in a deep blue wrap dress, styling my hair down

in waves. I put on a spritz of perfume before I exited the bedroom and headed towards the dining hall.

I wasn’t shocked to see Sabrina, but the presence of someone else did make me stop at the door briefly.

Demi, I remembered her name quickly.

Caleb’s friend.

My small smile faded even as Sabrina noticed me standing at the entrance of the hall and waved eagerly at me. The maids were already placing dishes on the table, a feast for us three.

“Morning,” I said, glancing briefly at Demi before sitting by my best friend’s side. Demi sat across from me but didn’t say anything in response.

‘So she was going to be like that, then, I thought to myself.

I recalled briefly the way that she had been yesterday when we first met. She had not so subtly tried to imply that my skills as a Healer weren’t worthy. If not for Caleb being there, I wasn’t so sure of how the situation would have turned out.

“How’s your leg?” I made sure to still ask, trying to be polite, while I poured myself a pitcher of juice, forgoing the steaming pots of coffee and tea.

“Fine. Where is Caleb?” she asked me without giving me a glance. My lips twitched, and I sighed inwardly.

Well, I had to pretend to not see what she was doing for now. It was clear she had an agenda in mind. But I hadn’t yet figured out what exactly.

Sabrina and I exchanged a small glance, and in my friend’s eyes i saw the annoyance in them, not aimed at me but at Demi herself. The purelooking girl wore a pastel pink dress, her movements small and delicate. But all I could concentrate on was how aloof she appeared. Untouchable.

Whatever she was after, it would take more than a few haughty behaviours to faze me. Not when I’d been targeted by someone like Felicia.

“He’s busy,” I finally responded.

“Okay,” she said, nodding. Then, without warning, she stood up from her seat, holding a plate filled with food. “I will excuse myself now, thank you.”

Her exit made me growl inexplicably. Somehow that little action of hers felt threatening. Felt like someone saying, ‘I don’t regard you at all’. And I LOATHED IT.

“Damn wench,” I heard Sabrina mutter by my side with venom. My anger dissipated and I whirled my head to chide my best friend.
