Caleb’s POV

I held the important folder which I had just retrieved from Callum the night before, as I walked the pathway leading to the meeting hall. It was a path not accessible to most pack members except during pack meetings, and only the council had permission to let anyone in.

Their own very sacred place.

Before I walked into the meeting hall, I could hear the murmur of voices inside the room.

“Do you think he will agree to such a thing?” I recognized one of the Elder’s voices to be that in Elder Talen’s faction. I scowled inwardly but didn’t let any emotion show, standing at the entrance quietly.

“For an investigation into the treaties he’s signed in the past five years? That may not be to his liking. But a lot has happened now,” another Elder spoke up, the voice louder than the previous.

“I for one, do not agree,” Elder Gerome’s voice was stern and unamused. “You believe the words of that fraud Talen simply because of his grand-niece’s relationship with Alpha Caleb in the past. Now you try to make it seem like Alpha Caleb is easily led by emotion and sentiment, when he has been dutiful to the pack at the cost of his own personal needs.”

The grumbling rose, and I frowned to myself.

“This is just a perfunctory audit, Gerome. You needn’t act so appalled.”

“It is a show of no confidence in the very Alpha that has made this pack as powerful as it is now. From a young age, Caleb has shown his loyalty lies with the pack and above all, with his duties as Alpha.” I could hear the solid conviction in Elder Gerome’s voice.

I didn’t bother waiting for any more words to be said.

With long, quick strides I entered the meeting hall. Instantly, all the murmurs stopped, and one could have heard a pin drop in the large room.

“Alpha Caleb,” Elder Gerome greeted and around him, other Elders murmured their greetings while rising to bow.

Glancing around me, I eyed the Elders who hadn’t bothered to bow and simply stood gazing down at me imperiously.

“Elders of the pack,” I greeted, keeping my tone polite despite the raging battle of will against my rising anger within me. “I received your summons. I believe no time should be wasted on small talk.”

In other words, get the fuck on with it already.

A fraction of the Elders must have noticed my cold attitude, because they didn’t bother with their usual hemming and hawing.

“Alpha Caleb,” an Elder began, and I stood atop the podium facing him. “The Council has noticed a

disturbing trend as of late, pointed out by several of our esteemed Elders. Your clashes with several members of the Council for one, due to your connection to the former Luna, Daria. Especially when it comes to certain members of the Council. And that is not acceptable.”

“You mean Elder Talen, I assume,” I chuckled a little, to the Elders’ growing confusion.

I was glad that I had prepared for that line of accusations. The investigation into Elder Talen’s household had finally yielded fruit the previous day, and part of the report was currently in my hands.

“Elder Talen is currently under investigation for several counts. I assume you must all be wondering where he has been the past couple of days. He is currently awaiting his sentencing,” I barely managed to get that out before someone let out a loud yell.

The Elder who had most defended Elder Talen in the past stood with a red face of rage. He banged on the desk, which echoed loudly in the hall.

“Preposterous! What has Elder Talen done to warrant such treatment?!” He then raised a hand to point at me, words still flying at me from his lips. “I demand to see the report.”

I raised a brow.

“I was just getting to that, Elder,” I replied without blinking. My gaze must have gotten to him and he paled a little and sat back down, looking away. “I believe you must all be questioning my abilities as Alpha. Well, when it comes to defending our pack from threats inside and out, I do not joke.” I raised the report.

Giving each of them a long look as I showed the report to them, I said, “This report proves that Elder Talen had not only been gathering information on me for the purpose of Blackmail and extortion, but also on every single member of the council here today. Down to your family history, your guards, your maids, and your children.”

I slammed the report down on the podium.

Everyone was silent now.

“That is only the first of his crimes we have seen. There have been rumors we caught of Elder Talen selling this information to the highest bidder. It doesn’t matter who buys it,” I growled. “He did it for the purpose of his own greed. And worse, some of you ended up helping him without knowing.”

“T-That-”

“I’m not DONE speaking,” I raised my voice for the first time. No one said a word after that. “If you deign to question my behavior in the past, despite the peace we have faced since my ascent as Alpha, then I have the right to question each and every one of you. This pack is my responsibility, and I will NOT tolerate anyone who has committed treason. Therefore, consider this a warning. Everyone who is involved with Elder Talen will be investigated, regardless of whether or not you like it.”

The meeting didn’t last long after that.

There was no talk of auditing my previous actions, or even a whisper of dissent again. Everyone looked uncomfortable, except for a fair few. Elder Cerome for one bad.

knew for sure would lead to a loud retelling at Jacob’s home that night.

Everyone of Elder Talen’s allies had all but fled, leading the spokesperson to end the meeting shortly after my impassioned speech.

Smirking to myself, I left the meeting hall and walked to the private meeting room even further away from peering eyes: the place where I had met Alpha Townsend secretly before.

Now this time I was meeting Eric Nolan.

We hadn’t had a chance to discuss what he had found yesterday, so this was very much needed.

As I entered the room, I saw that Jacob had gotten there as well.

Inviting him was a sure decision, after he had found out about Feicia’s pregnancy. After all, he was the only one I could trust to handle my matters discretely, even though he never failed to call me out.

“You’re late. I thought I’d have to wait all morning for you, Alpha Caleb,” Eric announced his presence that way. He stood by a pillar while Jacob was seated by the small table that was in the center of the room.

“What did you want to discuss?” I demanded without bothering to respond to his ribbing.

“This,” he reached out to hand me something in his hand. I grasped it.

A letter?

I turned over the envelope. It was unsealed, the wax broken.

That he had read it without my knowledge was another thing I didn’t like about the unruly Eric Nolan. It was impossible to control him even when we were on the same side.

“Where did you find it?” I asked, giving him a sharp glance.

“I intercepted it. Apparently, the Wisteria Pack has more eyes on it than I anticipated.” Eric shrugged. “Ive already caught the spy who had snuck this in. It was a woman disguised as a maid. Thank the Goddess she didn’t have any idea who I was before I caught her.”

Another maid?

I growled; it was worse than I had thought.

Unraveling the letter I raised my brows as I saw it only contained one single sentence.

‘Your stubborn insolence will not bode well for you, daughter, I swear it.’

It was obvious who it was from.

“Alpha Kingston is getting bold if he dares try to send this across my territory,” I remarked coldly, chuckling at

his bravado.

“He’s getting desperate,” Eric corrected, folding his arms. Glancing askance at him I let him continue, “I got

word from Killian that the Alpha of the Crimson Pack agrees to the alliance. He’ll return soon. And apparently,” he paused with a slight discomfort in his eyes. “News has already spread that the Red Vale Pack has broken ties with the Wisteria Pack. And the red Vale Pack is clearly gearing for a battle. Alpha Kingston is trying to use whatever means he can to get an advantage.”
