Chase Me Alpha (Daria and Caleb) novel Chapter 89

Chapter 89

Daria’s POV

“No, not that one.”

Sabrina heaved a huge sigh, slight frustration showing on her face briefly.

“Shall we try a different arrangement?” The florist asked me warily.

I nodded.

“Something less summery for the wedding. It’s going to be the end of summer by then. And I don’t think it’ll be feasible to expect these flowers to bloom by then,” I replied before pausing. “This would be fine for the engagement banquet though. Add it to the selection.”

“Uh…” The florist, a middle-aged looking woman with a colorful outfit turned to Sabrina who sat beside me.

“Do as she says,” Sabrina waved her off. “She’s more of an expert than I am.”

“Okay, madam.”

A while later, we saw the florist off, and I felt a little remorse, watching her exhausted figure stroll across the street before we returned inside.

\Was I being too demanding? This was the first time I’d ever gotten to help plan an event.

“No way,” Sabrina snickered as I asked the question out loud. “Honestly, Daria. I told you, if it weren’t for you, I would have given up on the planning altogether. I am happy to have you by my side really.”

Relaxing at her reassurance, I gestured for the maid to bring us a few snacks.

It was over an hour later when the sound of the voices coming in from the foyer made Sabrina and I stop talking. Caleb had returned clearly. But the sound of another familiar voice made Sabrina perk up. Jacob had apparently accompanied Caleb this time.

My mate’s scent filled my nostrils so quickly, and my heart skipped a beat. Standing up, I moved towards their direction to greet them. Sabrina followed close -ly behind.

“… And that is why we should- oh hey Daria.”

Jacob waved at me awkwardly as Caleb turned to meet my gaze.

Sabrina scoffed openly and folded her arms petulantly.

“You greet Daria before your own mate, now? Is that where we’re at, beta Jacob?”

Her use of his title made his brows raise and his lips parted as he chuckled and raised his hands in surrender.

“I’m sorry, baby,” He reached for her and she dodged with a step, pouting and tilting her head at him in mock

anger. “It won’t happen again, I promise.”

:

“It better not,” I added fuel to the fire by speaking, grinning wickedly.

Jacob turned to gape at me with a slight pained gaze.

“Really? I thought you were on my side, Lady Daria,” He said.

“That’s what you get for placing a bet on Caleb and I,” I shot back.

His face paled.

“A what?” Caleb’s voice was surprisingly close to me, and I shivered as his warm breath fanned my ear.

Swallowing I managed to banish the images and thoughts of what his touch did to me to respond.

“Oh, he didn’t tell you? Our best friends are nothing but a perfect pair of proper gossips,” I smirked as Jacob shrank back, groaning aloud.

“For fuck’s sake, it was ONE time,” he protested.

I couldn’t help it – the entire ruse fell and I laughed. Caleb’s voice as he laughed was just the perfect mix of rich baritone and smooth growls underneath it.

The moment passed with a warm feeling left behind.

“How did meeting the Elders go?” I asked, stepping towards Caleb.

“It was as expected,” He replied, sighing. “But for now, there’s nothing to worry about on that end. What we have to be more careful about is-”

A loud shriek cut through the rest of what he was about to say, and it was sharp enough to make me wince and then rushed footsteps followed. All of us snapped our heads to see a dark haired maiden run towards us.

“It can’t be! Jake, is that you?!”

Realizing it was Demi, I couldn’t help my lips twitch. I held my breath as Jacob stared open mouthed at Demi who was about to run into his arms.

Then, without a word, Sabrina stepped in front of her mate and blocked Demi completely.

Holding back a smirk I felt proud. Sabrina sported an unamused look on her face.

“I… see, Demi is the friend you were talking about, man,” Jacob sounded a little forced as he smiled. For the first time I noticed the smile didn’t quite reach his eyes as he looked at Demi.

Meanwhile, Demi’s eyes snapped towards Sabrina who looked calm and collected, clasping her hands together with Jacob. Demi’s gaze flashed with a sharp expression before it cleared. Then, like a mask, a soft, delicate smile was displayed on her lips, as she gazed from Caleb to Jacob.

“You two must have been busy,” she started, sounding pitiful. “I really missed the both of you. By the Goddess,

you have gotten much taller! I hear you’re the Beta now. Congratulations!” she shifted to stand by Caleb’s side, almost pressing her side against his.

My brows twitched and the little smile I had on my face before faded.

What the hell did she think she was trying to do?

“it’s been a while, Demi. Caleb mentioned what happened yesterday. It must have been terrifying,” Jacob assumed a more diplomatic role.

“Oh it was,” she shivered slightly, her face turning a little dark, then all of a sudden she blinked and her eyes became glossy, full of unshed tears.

Seeing that only made me more certain; something was up with this woman. She was acting way too much.

“It’s passed now,” Demi continued, sniffling a little and turning to Caleb with wide eyes resembling that of a doll. “I didn’t know when you had left. I would have gotten up earlier to see you off.”

Suddenly a red hot feeling swarmed my chest as she placed her hand gently on Caleb’s arm after those words. I growled, stepping forward and putting myself between Caleb and Demi.

“Perhaps you should maintain etiquette, Demi,” I said politely without any hint of warmth. Her eyes flickered from me to Caleb, and then she looked a little sad, flipping her hair.

“I’m sorry about that. I always end up thinking of the past. You know, I played with Caleb and Jacob when we were much younger. If not for my parents, I would have been here all this time.”

My eyes narrowed, and it was unmistakable the jab she was making at me.

But before I could respond to it, Jacob cleared his throat.

“Well, Daria is Caleb’s mate, and Sabrina is mine. So you can get along with them too during your stay. I’m sure you can tag along to their shopping and other adventures they get up to when we’re not around.”

His words were tinged with a lightness that never failed to improve the mood.

I smirked, exchanging a glance with Sabrina, but then Demi spoke up again.
