Caleb’s POV

Immediately after we saw Jacob and Sabrina off, no sooner had I shut the front door then I reached for Daria’s arm, pulling her close and giving her a long kiss.
Within seconds, our tongues were tangled together, a seamless interaction. The mate bond pulsed in my chest, like a secondary heartbeat in tandem with Daria’s pulse in my ears.
I flicked my tongue up to the roof of her mouth, drawing out a long breathy moan from her as I released her.
She was breathless and gazed up at me dazedly, as she linked her arms around my neck.
“Pervert,” she said, but her voice didn’t have any sharp edges. The sound of her breathlessness betrayed her true emotions, and limited the effect of her reproachful tone.
I raised one of my hands, cupping her chin gently, my thumb pressed against the fullness of her lips lightly.
“You enjoy it,” I teased back. She huffed in response and turned away, and I wrapped an arm around her waist, leading her towards the direction of my study.
“Hmmph,” She scoffed easily. “Like I can stop you from acting out, Caleb.”
Chuckling, I replied, “You’re the only one that can control me, love.”
And wasn’t that the truth. She fell silent after that, but one glance at her and I saw the smile on her face, her
cheeks red.
Enjoying her flustered state, I leaned in to inhale the scent I had missed on her hair, before kissing the outer tips of her ears.
“Next time, I won’t be able to hold back, love. I may be a pervert, but you can’t expect me to not indulge.”
With that I opened the door to my study and dragged her inside as she let out a “Hey!”.
I shut the door behind us and locked it. Daria raised a brow as I spoke, “Precaution. Walls have ears, love. This is the only place we can talk in here for now.”
She assumed a contemplative posture, folding her arms across her chest.
“What really happened with the Elders?” Daria started, as I had expected. I could feel the curiosity brimming in her since I had returned withJacob.
Sitting on the loveseat and leaning back against the cushions, I patted the other side of the sofa, giving her a beckoning look.
My mate understood easily and rolled her eyes a little. As soon as she sat down next to me I placed my hand on her thigh, answering her question.

Chapter 90
“The meeting went well. But it could have very well gone badly if I wasn’t prepared.”
Her brows furrowed and she looked at me askance.
Trying to organize my thoughts, I began my explanation.

“Apparently a certain faction of the Elders do not like the decisions I have been making. They were planning an ambush, to question every decision I had made recently.”
“That’s preposterous,” Daria raised her voice. “What was the reason behind that? What decisions?”
“Decisions about my choice of a partner, to be exact,” I growled, recalling the other Elder’s words. He had essentially shown his bias in front of everyone today.
It didn’t take more than a moment for Daria to deflate slightly.
“Me. It’s about me,” her voice lowered this time, to a small, barely-there whisper.
“Don’t.”
I tilted her chin and turned her to look into my eyes.
“Do not fucking blame yourself for anything,” I told her with heat. “If anything, they have to apologise to you. All of us owe you a huge fucking apology, Daria.”
“I…Caleb, I don’t want to be the reason behind your reputation being questioned,” She murmured, but relaxed against my side.
“Leave dealing with the Elders to me,” I felt like I’d have to remind her of this over and over again. “Focus on your training. On getting stronger. And we have more matters to deal with other than the Elders. Like your father for instance.”
“Alpha Kingston?” She was alert again. “What happened?”
I inhaled sharply – that had simply been an attempt to distract her. I had hoped to keep her out of most of the dealings regarding the Red Vale Pack.
I explained the note that had arrived, more like a summary. She didn’t need to know exactly what it contained, just that it was a threatening letter.
“I noticed Eric was a little distracted this morning,” She muttered under her breath. “And the letter… where is
it?”
“Destroyed,” I lied. It was actually kept for more forensic examination. If we could pinpoint how the letter made its way into the pack, it would greatly help in reducing our enemy count.
“Fine,” She sighed. “But don’t keep things from me like this again, okay? I’m not useless. I am a part of this.”
I apologized easily, assuring her with a kiss. Tugging her closer, we lost ourselves in the moment, ending up making out on the loveseat.

Evening turned to night and it was past midnight when I left the basement, after a quick check with my private guards.
Felicia insisted on seeing me more and more. Luckily, she and Elder Talen weren’t only not in the mansion, they also had no way of contacting each other.
Thinking about the next moves to make, I was utterly exhausted and had passed the stairwell when I heard a voice behind me.
“Caleb? Is that you?”
I froze and turned around to see Demi staring at me, her eyes tired, but still staring fixedly at me.
By the goddess, I thought, a little nervously. Had she seen me leave the basement?
“Demi, what are you doing awake?” I asked her, looking over her with a little bit of worry. Daria had removed the bandages from her foot earlier this evening, and it seemed she was already fully recovered. “You should go back to sleep.”
“I couldn’t rest easily. I don’t know…” she bit her bottom lip, her eyes wide and sinless. “Do I really have to leave this place, Caleb?”
I sighed a little; she was talking about that again.
“Demi, you’re not leaving the pack. We’re going to be around. But you can’t stay in the mansion.”
“It’s because of your mate, right?” her question made me frown slightly.
She hugged herself, and with the dim light, the contours of her body under the nightgown were barely visible.
Suddenly a strange sensation came over me. I took a step back, giving her a wide berth as I moved around her.
Demi continued softly, “I don’t know why, Caleb, but I really get the feeling that she doesn’t like me.”
“Daria is only doing her best. I am usually preoccupied with duties, She handles the house just fine,” I maintained my distance while speaking with her.
She stared at me, shock briefly coursing through her features.
“Really? B-but I still-”
I had enough. I wasn’t about to stand and let anyone insult Daria, not even if it was a former friend.
“Demi, there’s nothing more to say on this matter. Please go back to sleep,” I insisted.
She looked sad, her shoulders slumped and she turned numbly to walk away. I waited until she had gone to the end of the hallway, where her bedroom was. But she didn’t fail to turn around and give me one last,
