Chapter 91

Daria’s POV

The scene we rushed out to find was enough to make me furious.

Demi stood over a kneeling maid who had her hands clasped together and pleading. But she didn’t seem to

care.

Stepping forward to stand beside Caleb I saw Demi’s face suddenly shift and her eyes began to visibly tear up. She clutched her hand to her chest and sniffled, loudly.

“Caleb,” Her voice was wavering, shaky. “I was attacked by this maid. I got hurt. See?”

She reached her hand up to pull the strap of her nightgown down, exposing more of her creamy skin. I pushed past Caleb and grabbed her arm, preventing Caleb from seeing any more.

“Let me see,” I said, pulling Demi closer. She stiffened and I felt her resisting, biting her bottom lip. The look she gave me was utterly inscrutable.

Smirking inwardly I inspected the wound.

The spot looked inflamed, reddened and raised, with traces of scratch marks at the center, with blood clotted

over it.

It didn’t look too terrible, but it was certainly worse than the sprained ankle she had been trying to use as a.

“Please, Alpha, I… I didn’t do anything,” The maid began to cry and I turned to see the reddened face of the maid, tears streaming down her face.

“Then why did I wake up to find you in my bedroom?” Demi inquired.

“I… I was only doing what you asked! You said I should bring some more blankets and-”

“Your excuses are nothing but lies. You set out to harm me… I… I’m injured!” Demi burst into tears, covering her face with one hand.

I glanced at Caleb and saw his eyes darken.

But then I spoke up, releasing Demi’s shoulder.

“I understand you may be upset, Demi, but this maid isn’t a new staff member. I know her well, and she is one of the maids in charge of laundry duty for the entire house,” I kept my voice calm. “She has stayed in this household for too long to suddenly attack. Perhaps we need to question her and do our investigations before doling out heavy punishments.”

“That’s true,” Caleb agreed, his voice thick with sleep.

I felt angry on his behalf; while I had gone to bed early I was sure that Caleb hadn’t come in until late. So what right did Demi have to wake him up so suddenly?

And I was sure it wasn’t intentional.

Demi wasn’t a little girl. She wasn’t a fool. Something was up here.

“What do you mean? What other proof do you need? I’m hurt…”

I cut her off, “We can decide that after the investigation is over. Don’t you think that would be better?”

She glanced at Caleb, her eyes fixed on him as though I had not said anything. Scowling openly I turned to my mate as well. He rubbed his eyes lightly, his lips turned downward in displeasure.

“Daria is right,” Caleb easily agreed. “She’s in charge of the household, and what she says goes.” My heart skipped a beat at the last sentence. But he continued without a pause, “Demi, I understand you are upset. But trust that this matter will be handled accordingly.”
