Snorting at Demi’s ever chilly attitude towards me, I reached for the coffeepot and began to brew myself a super strong cup. Goddess knew I needed it to deal with her.
I ignored her while working, feeling her eyes heavy on my back.
Then, I heard her voice, “Why does it seem like you don’t like me?”
Her voice was soft like before, but I sensed she was fishing for something.
“I don’t hate you, Demi,” I said without turning back. I poured the creamer into my cup, watching steam rise
into the air.
“Then why do you not want me to stay?” She asked. “You were the one who told Caleb that I couldn’t stay right?”
I let out a short chuckle.
“You really know how to assume things, don’t you? By the way, whether I asked him to do so or not, it’s obvious that you can’t stay here. You’re not a member of this household. You are your own person, and you can afford to take care of yourself.”
I leveled a heavy look at her and she looked away. I saw the tension in her jaw, her eyes lowered to gaze at the ground. I was waiting for her to speak, like we were having a reasonable conversation instead of her trying to find ways to accuse and provoke me.
I was waiting for the mask to fall. When she didn’t speak for a long while I assumed she was done, and took a sip of my coffee.
Hmm… nice.
The decadent richness made my tongue and nostrils tingle.
I nearly missed when she spoke again.
“I see. You lied about not liking me then. I understand. It must be because you’re afraid I’ll steal Caleb from you-”
Her words made me clench the cup tighter.
“Don’t bring Caleb into this,” I cut her off, warning in my tone. After a few moments, she shrugged and kept mum. “I understand you pulled that trick last night to try and get him to let you stay, but it was unnecessary.”
“Trick?” She covered her mouth to stifle a giggle. Her eyes were full of amusement, but not just that. I growled inwardly. Mockery was clear in them.
Don’t lose your cool, Daria.

Thinking back to Felicia briefly for the second time that day, a small smirk spread across my lips.

“I’m a woman, Demi. Just like you. Don’t think that I don’t notice,” I kept my face impassive, letting my words speak for itself. “Of course, I don’t blame you for acting that way. Caleb is quite the catch. But he’s not yours to have. And your games to garner sympathy won’t work for long.”
“I didn’t do anything.”
“Hmm… okay, let’s pretend that’s true, Demi.”
I took another sip of coffee.
“If you don’t believe me, then that’s your problem,” she muttered, her eyes avoiding mine. “But you don’t even bother giving me a chance? You treat me like I don’t deserve to be listened to.”
“That’s your opinion, but the goddess knows things aren’t that simple. It comes down to one thing. I won’t let anyone slander any of my maids,” I said to her clearly, watching her face turn from pale to a shade of pink. “Not even if it’s you, who claims to be a friend of Caleb’s. And, Demi, don’t think I don’t know what you’re up
to.”
“W-What’s that supposed to mean?” she asked me, her tone taking on an edge now.
I didn’t respond to her, seeing her mask splinter and show her true emotions. Her gaze was dark, dangerously
I knew it. Not only that she lied, but that her personality of being innocent, guileless and pure was nothing more than a carefully constructed lie.
This was the first step to finding out what she was truly up to. Who was Demi really?
“Oh, nothing,” I said sunnily, smiling in the same innocent way she always did. “Simply saying that if you have any more problems with the maids, you should come to me first. Caleb has too much to do to handle frivolous domestic matters.”
Then, grasping the cup of coffee, I turned around and left the kitchen, feeling her gaze bore holes into my back.
My smirk didn’t leave my face until I reached my room. Then I began to make my plans.
An hour later, I reached the locked bedroom in the servants quarters. As soon as I walked in I heard snittling and muffled sobs.
The maid hadn’t yet noticed my arrival, and she was huddled in the corner, curled into a fetal position.
“Carla,” I called her name, which the head maid had provided me with merely minutes ago.
She stiffened and suddenly leapt up, wiping her tears with the hem of her long skirt, blinking rapidly.
“M-Madam,” her voice was hoarse as she bowed low. I watched her body shake with obvious fear.

“Have you had breakfast?” I asked her, seemingly out of the blue. She froze, her pale lips parting and closing like a fish once or twice before she slowly shook her head. “Then you wouldn’t mind joining me on an outing, would you?”
Perhaps it was the calmness in my voice, but hope shone in her eyes for the first time.
“Y-you’re not going to punish me?” She asked softly, not daring to step closer, her eyes flickering from me to the floor.
My heart clenched.
I couldn’t imagine how lonely she must have felt in the room, awaiting judgement.
“No, because you didn’t do anything wrong. Did you?” I asked, and immediately she shook her head repeatedly.
The story came out far too easily.
“I had only gone to her room to hand her more blankets, madam, I swear it. All of a sudden she starts screaming and yelling at me. She… she said I attacked her but… honest,” she fervently insisted, her hands tightly balled around the fabric of her skirt. “I don’t know what happened… I really didn’t do anything. I swear on my life and on the Goddess-”
“That’s enough,” I said, and she fell silent. “Get cleaned up quickly. And pack your things as well.”
