Chapter 94
Daria’s POV
“So that’s why you need me to take her in?” Sabrina’s question was asked while we ate breakfast.

The maid, Clara, had already been sent to help the rest of the maids at Jacob’s mansion with duties. It wasn’t as prestigious as her previous work at Caleb’s mansion, but it was a lot better than the alternative.
“Yeah.” I crossed my arms, leaning back with a soft breath and exhaled. “This is exhausting, dealing with her
all the time.”
“It’s only been a day,” she pointed out and I rolled my eyes, muttering under my breath, which made her giggle a little in response. “I get it. It’s a good thing I’m not the one dealing with her. I already told Jacob not to go near her. I don’t know what’s up with her but she’s set her sights on those two men of ours.”
Of course she did. It was so damn blatant – her attempts to catch Caleb’s attention, of acting so coy, of pushing blame onto me and trying to make me look like the bad guy.
I calmly took the anger I felt in my heart and stabbed the eggs and sausage, shoving the pieces in my mouth. The burst of flavor kept me distracted long enough for Sabrina to change the subject.
“Anyway, the engagement banquet is tomorrow night.” Her face lit up, joy on her face. “I’m only glad that it’s about to be over.”
“Brina!” I glared at her in mock horror. “Don’t tell me married life is already tiring you out.”
“It’s not that, Daria,” she laughed again and shook her head. “It’s just… I feel so much pressure to handle everything by myself. And I’m the Beta’s mate, and soon his wife, y’know?” She shrugged helplessly.
“It’s okay,” I comforted her, “You don’t have to do anything you don’t want to. And sure, you’ve got a lot to do. But you have support, Brina. Don’t ever forget that. We’re here for you. Jacob wouldn’t want you to be under pressure.”
And then I changed the subject towards a lighter topic.
After a while I left Sabrina’s home, taking the scenic route back to the mansion.
As I walked through the farmers market, the hustle and bustle of the pack members floating from stall to stall drowned out the many thoughts in my mind. I distracted myself even more by perusing various clothing stalls, idly caressing fabric and inquiring about the prices.
Once I’d made my purchase, I was about to turn and go the other way when I felt someone brush past me. My heart skipped instantly.
I could have sworn…
I parted my side, feeling for my coin purse that hung on my skirt.
It was gone.

Chapter 94
I whirled around in panic and witnessed the hooded stranger turning down a path.
“Hey!” I yelled and gave chase.

Whoever that was I couldn’t let them get away. I found myself running after the hooded to the back of the market and down an alleyway.
My heart beat furiously in my chest.
As he turned the corner, I swiftly followed only to grind to a half, nearly tripping over my feet.
The man wasn’t alone. Before me, stood not one, but three people.
And all of them were hooded, their faces covered.
I stared at them, my ears listening for anyone who might be around, anyone who could help.
This area of the markets was desolate.
I swore in my head, thinking to myself that I’d fallen into a trap.
“Who are you?” I demanded, unwilling to show fear.
The man who had stolen my coin purse stood in the middle of the other two, and he twirled the leather pouch in his hands, chuckling.
“Come and get it, if you can,” the taunt was obvious from his tone.
I grit my teeth and seethed as the coin purse was tossed aside, then one of them charged at me. I barely had time to duck, and my fight with the three assailants began.
I wasn’t foolish; my plan was to find a way to escape this trap and call for help. I wasn’t sure if they had a trick up their sleeves to undermine me.
Steadily I moved backwards, trying to make my way out of the alley without getting hit.
They had their movements coordinated. One would punch upwards and the other would try to kick at me at the same time. If not for my training with Eric, I wasn’t sure I could hold my own for long.
As I was about to exit the alleyway, suddenly something blocked my path, tall and imposing.
It was another of them, I realized too late as my body was pushed to the ground with force.
I cried out, kicking at the man who jumped back.
Faintly I was aware of my body shaking, suddenly weak against their blows. The more I fought the slower I became. I was losing.
A loud yell made the men pause.
“Pick on someone your own size,” It was Eric.

Warm relief flooded my body and I managed to shift myself to stand by his side.
The attackers were furious now, and they charged without care right at us.
Eric caught the blow of one of the men and twisted the hand, causing him to cry out.

My cousin’s skills were phenomenal, and all I could do was watch as he took over, fluidly moving from opponent to opponent, dodging and kicking and punching.
Even without him shifting to gain an advantage, there was no doubt he was going to win.
“Enough!” One of the attackers threw a dagger at Eric which he ducked and rolled away from.
In an instant they all broke into a run, fleeing. It was over.
“You okay?” I looked up into Eric’s concerned eyes and nodded, panting like I’d just finished a training
session.
“T-They got away,” my voice was shaky, but he didn’t falter, picking up my coin purse and handing it to me. “Thanks,” I murmured.
“You’re welcome,” he said. “And you don’t need to worry about the men escaping. I already informed the guards at the front to keep a look out for them. I was on their tail, and suddenly I lost a few of them. And then they came to you. It’s my fault.”
The way his lips turned downwards into a small pour, and his eyes glowing with self-deprecating anger, made me smile sadly. He really took his responsibility to me seriously.
“You shouldn’t blame yourself,” I told him, patting his arm. “You’re honestly one of the sharpest people I know. And I was able to fend them off a little. I’m safe.” Then I paused, before asking. “How did these men get in here?”
“I don’t know,” he growled. “But it’s worrying. I’ve been on high alert since I came in here. I’ve caught a lot of spies since then. But they somehow keep-”
He cut himself off, as if aware that I was listening.
“You don’t have to hide anything from me, Eric. I’m involved in this too.” I insisted.
“Yeah, but it doesn’t mean that I would bother you,” he bowed his head. “It’s my duty to protect you.”
“And it’s my responsibility to grow stronger.”
He sighed, unable to muster up a single rebuttal.
Then he slowly said, in a low voice, “The spies I take down somehow keep getting replaced. Like they’re always multiplying. I’ve suspected there’s a way they keep coming in but we haven’t discovered it yet.”
My heart sped up.
