By the time it was all over, it was already evening. Our bodies were exhausted. Pressed against Daria, I traced my fingernails gently over her pale skin. The marks I had left on her still lingered like a brand.

“Mmhh,” Daria softly moaned as I tenderly caressed her breast. I pressed my lips against the cook of her neck, while inhaling her absolutely decadent scent.

“You absolute asshole,” I heard her curse. “Don’t even think about another round. I’m already sore.”

I chuckled, pressing my nose further into her neck. If I could I would mark her again and again, until her entire body was littered with them. But knowing my mate well, she would likely punch me right now if I did that.

“Lovely,” I flicked my tongue over her collarbone, where my mark still stayed displayed on her skin.

“Im warning you, Caleb. Tomorrow’s an important day.” She said but didn’t push me away.

I let out another laugh, before releasing her, letting her cover herself with half of the sheet.

We had moved to my bedroom only after half of our clothes were off.

Leaning back against the pillows, I propped my head up to look at her. I could do that forever, I thought, mindlessly roving my eyes over the peaks of her breast, the sheets wrapped around her draped in such accidental elegance that only emphasized her beauty more.

Her hair was as disheveled as the rest of her, but there was nothing out of place.

She looked perfect.

I nearly missed what she was saying, as I was trying to push down the urge to pull her close and fuck her once again.

“How did the meeting with Aloha Townsend go?” She had asked after arranging the sheets over her body and lying down on her side to face me.

Remembering the day’s events, I once again was able to cease my lustful thoughts and move right onto retelling what had happened the rogues appearing, the report from Alpha Townsend.

“So there’s three of them,” Daria said after I was done. Her gaze was dark and contemplative.

“And one of them replaced Raul. Our focus now is to take care of Eres.” I explained, thinking of various strategies that we could take. I’d have to have a meeting with Jacob soon, if not tomorrow. I didn’t want to bother my friend on the day of his engagement banquet but it was unavoidable. The duty of Alpha and Beta was all-consuming, ever encompassing.

“And the other two? Is there no way to find out who they are? It’s a man and a woman right?” She sat up, holding the sheet tightly to her body as she did. “We can’t afford to let those other two go by.”

“Nor can we spread our warriors too thin,” I reminded her.

“We have allies,” She said, her eyes gleaming.

“But we have no idea where to start looking. The safest bet is to search for Eres. He is the key to figuring out the identities of the other two.”

She fell silent, and I could understand. The conflicting feelings were written all over her face. She worried her bottom lip, her cheeks flushed and brows knitted.

Before I could ask what she was thinking a knock on the door sounded.

Three short taps.

I knew who it was: none other than the head of my personal guards, Callum.

I quickly put on a robe and opened the door.

“What is it?” I moved closer while I asked, knowing of the situation that I was keeping under wraps even now.

Was it Felicia again? Acting out as always, I had expected another attempt to reach me from her.

If not for the fact that she was pregnant with my child I would have made sure she never got the chance to behave this way ever again.

“Alpha, it’s…” He lowered his voice a bit more. “Elder Talen wants to see you.”

Elder Talen? Hmm, that was new.

I frowned slightly and thought. It wouldn’t harm anyone for me to find out what he wanted. Perhaps he wanted to beg again in Felicia’s behalf. But I wasn’t going to be as merciful as before.

“Very well. I’ll be there,” I said, dismissing him with a wave.

“What is it?” Daria asked as I turned around and began to dress up properly, taking off the robe in favour of a T-shirt that cling to my skin.

“It’s… ah… a situation. Nothing serious but I have to see to it,” I half-explained, firmly glossing over the fact that I was deliberately keeping things vague. Daria must have noticed too because her eyes remained fixed on me. I leaned over and kissed her on the lips. A sweet distraction, but enough to remind me of the last two hours we had just spent together. “I’ll be back soon.”

“Alright,” she sighed and leaned back, before saying, “I have something to occupy myself with while you’re gone anyway.”

I raised a brow at her to which she waved me off, rolling her eyes.

“No need to ask. You’ll find out soon.”

Chuckling to myself I left the room, before meeting with Callum at the front of the hallway. We moved together, him keeping two steps behind me while I took the lead.

Only once we were in a safe spot in the darkness of the path leading to the safe house did I begin to think about what might happen with Elder Talen.

Elder Talen was, to my surprise, seated and waiting for me. I looked over him while I entered, leaving Callum standing guard at the door. There was no one else within a walking distance that I had to fear but it was still a precaution.

“Alpha Caleb,” Elder Talen’s voice was unmistakably hoarse, a stark difference form how it had always been before.

He had changed.

I pushed down the rising alarm as I noted his sunken eyes, his hands trembling nearly imperceptibly, the way his clothes hung off his body.

Something was wrong with him.

“Are you ill?” I couldn’t help but ask, keeping my distance and glaring at him. After everything I had discovered about his dealings and those I had YET to discover, I knew he was capable of anything. Even blackmail and guilting.

I wasn’t going to let my guard down.

Elder Talen took in a deep breath and I was nearly startled by how I could hear a strange rattling, raspy noise as he did so.

“Close. Im dying, Alpha Caleb. I lose no harm to you anymore. I have given up, and you should be happy,” He replied, his voice eerily calm.

“Dying,” I tensed. “What is that supposed to mean?”

“It means im no longer useful. Not since I was confined to this place.” He gazed at me. “Im sure you know that I have… done things. By now you would have found out. You may be one of the brightest Alphas I’ve ever met.”

“Your people are selling you out,” I replied easily, not caring that he knew about my investigation on him. “One by one. And now you’re going to be left to face the consequences of your actions of treason, among others.”

“Hehe,” he laughed, breaking off into a cough. I frowned as he shook with each cough.

Was he really dying?
