I yawned a little, rubbing my eyes as I stood from the bed. I could feel the echoes of Caleb’s touches from the entire afternoon we had spent together. Feeling warm and safe, I finally ventured out into the hallway. It was barely past 7pm, and I was not only hungry, but waiting for someone.

“Madam,” The maid appeared from seemingly out of nowhere. Only I wasn’t surprised at all. She was one of Sabrina’s bodyguards – Jacob had insisted on his mate not having male bodyguards and had picked three of the best female bodyguards for her. Part of the reason I had gone to see my best friend this morning wasn’t just to save Clara, but to get someone that could work to my benefit.

“Come,” I gestured for her to follow me. We went to my bedroom and only once it was safely locked did I bother to turn around and ask, “What have you found out?”

The woman’s eyes were unreadable, but her posture was straight, so different from a normal maid’s. If not for her delicate looking appearance, I wouldn’t have expected her to keep up the act of being a simple maid.

“I have tracked Demi’s whereabouts for the past day as you have asked. She had sent a few letters secretly, but I was unable to intercept them. Her belongings don’t show anything suspicious, but she is more watchful than I had expected.

I listened, nodding to myself slowly while regarding my bedroom.

I had been too distracted by the fact that that bitch had entered my bedroom to properly look over it. Tracing my hand atop the desk I began to rummage about, checking the corners for any hints. I picked up my medical journal, and suddenly something fell out and landed on the floor

Looking down I saw it was a white envelope. The scent that emanated from it made my nose wrinkle. It felt familiar, yet not. I bent down to pick it up, murmuring, “Would you say she is simply misunderstood or does she have ulterior motives?”

The warrior – her name was Fallon – paused before responding clearly behind me.

“She definitely isn’t a simple woman. I fear she has much to hide, madam. I need some time to see what exactly she is up to.”

Raising the white envelope to my face I sniffed cautiously, only for a feeling of nausea to hit me like a train. Coughing lightly I covered my nose and shook the envelope. Traces of a green powder fell out, sprinkling the desk which my hand hovered over.

I knew what this was.

Dread pooled in my gut, but I silenced it, shaking my head. She was definitely here to plant something. And I was going to become a pawn in her game if I hadn’t been careful.

Too bad she wasn’t dealing with a pushover.

“You can leave,” I told Fallon after a while. “Make sure no one sees you lurking about. Like I said before, keep yourself undercover until I say so. The next time you see her with a letter, try to intercept it. It is imperative

I hadn’t told Caleb about this before – I wanted to have all my ducks in a row before I did anything.

“Yes madam,” She bowed and left, her footsteps barely a whisper in the quiet house.

Gazing down at the green dust on my desk I scoffed lightly and cleared it off my desk. I hid the white envelope and took my time going for a shower to clear my head. It did wonders. I had my maid bring some dinner to my bedroom – a simple affair of tomato chicken soup topped with cheese, some bread and nice wine. I was careful to check for poison in the food and wine before I even took a bite. At this point, knowing that Demi was capable of anything was enough to make me cautious.

She was a snake, the most dangerous type of viperous woman as far as i was concerned.

Glad to have trusted my instincts in the beginning, I went to bed, waiting for the storm to arrive as I was sure it would.

Minutes turned slowly to hours and I had just begun to drift off to sleep when I heard a loud crash from somewhere in the mansion.

I jerked up, my dream suddenly evaporating into thin air. Instead my heart beat fast like I had just run for miles. Rising to my feet I rushed out the door, hearing Caleb’s loud growl.

“Get the fuck out!” He was saying, snarling like a wild animal. Even though I knew it was my mate, that tone was murderous and dark as they came, and I shivered a little, nearly afraid of going to see what was wrong. However I didn’t need to enter Caleb’s bedroom, as the door suddenly burst open and a woman’s loud sobbing filled the air. I watched as Caleb walked out, his eyes blazing with a fiery fervour. He was half-naked, his muscles rippling in the warm light emanating from the chandeliers on the high ceiling. My breath caught and rage surged through me as I saw a pink mark on his chest. A bite mark. One I hadn’t put there.

What the hell!

I rushed over as he pulled a delicate, fragile looking Demi out of the bedroom.

His grip was so tight I nearly thought he would rip her arm off. My eyes widened like saucers as I saw the state of her. Her hair was disheveled, her lips pink, and her clothes disheveled. Her eyes sported a faint dazedness to them and her cheeks were flushed as she stared at Caleb, tears streaming down her face.

“P-Please-” Demi tried to speak in that normal pitiful, high pitched small voice she put on.

But Caleb wasn’t having it.

“You have no right to beg!” he growled, his fangs showing, extended like he was meeting an enemy in battle. It was then I saw just how close he was to shifting. His hands flexed, the fingernails turning sharper and longer before my eyes.

I stepped forward and placed my hand on his bare shoulder immediately. His muscles instantly tensed in a millisecond and he snapped to glare at me. It lasted for only a second before reason came to his gaze and he blinked slowly, before he blurted out, “Love, it’s not what you think.”

“I know,” I assured calmly, although I was holding back a flurry of words I could hurl at Demi then and there. I was trying to deescalate first before I would push Demi to a corner. “You don’t have to explain.”
