Then Daria delivered a kick at Demi’s side, causing her to cry out. Her screams echoed down the hall and I was sure that if no one in the mansion hadn’t woken up by now it was a ficking miracle.

I wasn’t surprised that Daria was furious. I never expected this level of anger from her though.

I barely spared a glance at Demi’s shaking, pleading form. If not for the fact that I had been able to wake up quickly and push her away…

I shuddered.

I had returned very late, barely an hour ago, from Elder Talen’s place.

I had seen someone lying on the bed and assumed, in my distracted state, that it was my mate: that had been my mistake.

I practically was out like a light as my head hit the pillows. But even then, how had I not noticed?

Demi’s scent was far different from Daria’s, and they couldn’t even be compared.

So how..?

“But it’s true,” Demi raised her voice again, still shaky. But there was a light in her eyes that I couldn’t deny. “You caused this! I didn’t even know what was happening.”

“How is that possible?” I asked, cutting her off. Her weak excuses were no match for me.

“I… I’m sure I was drugged,” Demi said, which shocked me to my core.

“Drugged?” My eyes narrowed at her. Was this a trick?

Then it hit me, a realization that came out of nowhere. I had noticed a strange scent when I entered my room – that was similar to burnt firewood and petrichor. It was there, masking everything else…

“It might be possible,” I turned to regard Daria who looked even more fierce. Her blue eyes bored a hole into

“It might be. But no one sent her to your bed, did they?”

“It was you! You did!” Demi yelled, pointing at Daria again. “I know I only ate whatever the maids gave me! I was exhausted and so I fell asleep. Then…. then….” her eyes were red rimmed and she covered her face, which were already streaked with tears. “I can prove it! I swear I can prove it if you just let me, Caleb! I want my honor to be defended!”

I swallowed before turning to glance at Daria. As we exchanged a look, I found myself wondering if Demi was

‘Don’t worry,’ I could have sworn I heard Daria’s voice in my head. ‘I am not so foolish. Let her test me.’

Fine, I thought. Then I said to Demi, “Prove it. You only have one chance.”

My words carried a tone of daring, and of warning.

Within minutes she had led us to Daria’s bedroom.

She trembled as she cowered from Daria’s imposing figure behind me, and pointed at a corner where her journal and medicine box lay.

“She must have done something to me. You can check. I’m sure you’ll find something,” Demi sounded so sure that I raised my brows.

Giving the orders to the two guards that accompanied us, we began the search.

Daria didn’t move, her eyes following Demi like a predator eyeing prey.

There was a game going on, one I had no idea about but would soon find out.

“Alpha!” One of the guards called out, before raising something in his hand. The scent immediately filled the air so damn sharp I had to cover my nose. It stung a little but was immediately familiar.

That same burnt firewood scent, along with petrichor. It was heavier now, and all led back to the envelope that the guard held. He held it out and I picked it up.

“There!” Demi trembled, pointing to Daria with sad eyes. “You must have drugged me. I recognize this scent. I smelt it in the room before…”

“Did you?” Daria’s words were cutting, amused. She folded her arms across her chest and glared down at Demi. “I can take a look at whatever this is, although from the scent I can tell. It’s an aphrodisiac, and has hallucinogenic properties. Even a grown warrior in his prime couldn’t resist the pull.”

I growled; so that was what this was.

“This envelope has been found in your room,” Demi began, taking a step forward, gaining more confidence as she stood face to face with my mate. “You drugged me. Do you deny it?”

“I do. Because you drugged yourself, Demi. Like a little snake, you think you can hold me responsible. But I’m not a fool,” she retorted.

“Enough,” I raised my hand to stop any more insults thrown. Then I turned to Daria. “Do you have a reason why this is in your room?”

I asked, not with doubt of her character and intentions, but with a certainty that my mate had truly anticipated this. There was no other reason for how calm she was.

“It’s easy. She placed it there. Today, when she entered my room pretending to search for her mother’s necklace. But let me ask you, Demi,” she sneered. “Did you ever have a necklace? I have never seen one on

“But let’s assume you did lose it. And let’s assume you were drugged. How could I have gotten this drug? It’s impossible.”

“You lie!” Demi yelled.
