Chapter 33 Divorce With Nothing?
Around noon, Ruby texted her.
It’s done.
Charlotte looked at the photo and smiled.

She really wanted to know what expression Matthew would wear tonight when he saw
that outpatient report.
Lillian and Everly didn’t come back until evening.
So Mila felt safe enough to bring food straight to Charlotte’s room.
Charlotte hadn’t even been hungry.
This so-called confinement was nothing more than her giving herself some peace and
quiet.
She spent the whole day

After she finished, she sent it to Nathan.
Nathan only replied with two words.
“Received.”
Charlotte had just cleared the chat history when the bedroom door was pushed open
without even a knock.
Matthew walked in, seeming to carry a faint scent of alcohol.
When he got closer, the smell got stronger, and Charlotte couldn’t help frowning.
Matthew sat down at the edge of the bed and loosened his collar.
“Charlie.”
Charlotte didn’t answer. She just looked at him.
For the past few days, this man had been acting strangely-almost eerie.
He might as well go back to treating her like she was invisible, like before.

Matthew’s hand touched her cheek, his eyes holding an emotion she couldn’t quite
name.
“In the future… try not to make Grandma angry so often.”
So Lillian must’ve said something to him.
“Today at noon, Grandma came to my company,” Matthew said. “She brought up the two
of us.”
Charlotte asked calmly, “And?”
Matthew said, “Grandma thinks there’s no need for our marriage to continue.”
Charlotte stayed calm. “Then what did you say?”
Matthew’s smile was hard to read. “Guess.”
Charlotte said, “I can’t guess.”
Matthew pinched her cheek like he was issuing an order.
“Guess. I want to see if, as my wife, you can read my mind.”
Charlotte had the urged to curse.
Out loud, she said, “If Grandma insists you divorce me, I think you will.”
Matthew narrowed his eyes. “You’re that sure?”
Charlotte answered lightly, acting sensible and considerate.
“Grandma is the head of the family. Even you have moments when you can’t do what you want. I understand, so I don’t want to make it hard for you.”
“If you want to divorce me, I’ll agree.”
Matthew asked, “And then leave with nothing?”
Heh.
So they really had decided she should divorce with nothing.
Charlotte kept her face smooth. “As long as you say the word.”
The corner of Matthew’s mouth lifted into a gentle smile.

“How did I never know you were this generous and considerate?”
Charlotte replied, “Because you’ve never seriously looked at me.”
Matthew reached for Charlotte’s hand.
Her slender, beautiful fingers seemed to make him reluctant to let go.
“So,” he said, “I’m planning to look at you properly from now on.”
Charlotte’s heart jolted.
“What do you mean?”
A trace of disgust flashed across Matthew’s face.

“Grandma may be the head of the family, but she can’t control my private life. As long as
I don’t want it, she won’t dare force me. After all…”
“The grandson she loved most is already dead.”
A cold, crawling chill spread over Charlotte.
Tonight’s Matthew felt dark-so dark it was frightening.
“Charlie.” Matthew toyed with her fingers. “Grandma has always favored John. Favored
him so much that… if John and I liked the same thing at the same time, she’d always
make me give it to John.”
Charlotte almost blurted out, Including when you both liked the Jones family’s daughter?
“So the thing I hate most is giving in.”
“And I’m getting more and more sick of her telling me what to do-like I have to do
whatever she says!”
“Matt.” Seeing his emotions heat up, Charlotte could only soften her voice. “You’ve had
too much to drink. Get some rest.”
Matthew acted like he hadn’t heard her. “I’m not divorcing you. From now on, I want to
live well with you. So no matter what nasty things Grandma says, just endure it. There’s
no need to clash with her.”
After all that, it was just him telling her to endure.

Not a single word about standing up for her.
Only now did Charlotte realize it.

Matthew seemed to hold a lot of dissatisfaction toward Lillian.
And after years of swallowing it down, that dissatisfaction had grown sharper and
stronger.
Charlotte quietly pulled her hand back and hid it under the blanket, rubbing it hard.
“Go rest,” she said. “Stop overthinking.”
But Matthew stared at her and asked, “Charlie, if one day I do something wrong, would
you forgive me?”
One day?
Hadn’t you already done something wrong?
And not just once.
From the very beginning, Matthew had been lying to her. Those vows at the wedding
had all been bullshit.
He married her on impulse-out of convenience.
His body might have been with her, but the woman in his heart was Isabella.
No wonder, for three years, her husband’s kindness to this sister-in-law of his had even
crossed into blatant favoritism.
Blindly loving someone really could lower her IQ.
Charlotte felt like a complete idiot.
She’d actually believed Matthew treated Isabella well because their families were close,
because he saw Isabella like his real little sister.
Right now, Charlotte felt exhausted to the bone.
Knowing everything, yet having to pretend she knew nothing.
