Chapter 34 You’ll Only Ever Be His Mistress
Matthew stared at the words “about two days,” and his face darkened.
He tossed out a single sentence. “Get some rest early.”
Then he stood up and left.

Charlotte had zero interest in what he was going to do. She locked the door from the
inside.
And in that moment, she realized something.
Matthew had changed.
He had actually said something like, “Let’s live properly together.” It was unbelievable.
Three years of marriage, and not one single day had he ever looked like a man who
wanted to build a life with her.
Charlotte’s existence had

And now he suddenly had that kind of thought. To her, that wasn’t a good thing.
Charlotte started to wonder if she’d been acting too convincingly lately-so convincing
that Matthew had started to see her differently.
Meanwhile, Matthew went straight to Isabella’s room.
Isabella was breastfeeding the baby.
The moment Matthew saw it, he averted his eyes and turned his back.
Isabella laughed sweetly as she coaxed the baby while feeding.
“Baby, look who’s here. Your ‘dad’ came to see you.”
Matthew’s brows knitted together.
After the feeding, the nanny carried the baby away.
Isabella tidied her clothes.
The provocative scene was gone, but the full swell of her chest still made it hard for a
man to resist.

Isabella’s favorite thing about herself was that proud figure.
Curves in all the right places.

“Matt, you don’t look so good.”
Matthew’s voice dropped low. “What day exactly did Joseph have the allergy attack?”
Isabella’s heart jolted. “Didn’t the doctor say yesterday?”
Matthew’s tone sharpened. “Was that the doctor talking-or you?”
Isabella clenched the blanket. The sudden interrogation left her with no better excuse.
“…”
“Bella.” Matthew sighed. “Why did you do this? Was it because of that apartment?”
Isabella bit her lip, eyes reddening.
“It wasn’t for the place. It was for…”
Matthew glanced at her wronged, pitiful look and felt inexplicably irritated.
This shift was strange.
In the past, the moment Isabella showed even a hint of grievance, he would soften.
He cared so much about her before.
So why, now, was he suddenly feeling disgust?
“Matt, if I tell you the truth, will you ignore me?”
Matthew didn’t answer.
Isabella pouted, miserable. “The truth is, I was scared. I was scared you’d start ignoring
me and the baby.”
“So… so I acted on impulse. When you and Charlie were handling the transfer paperw ork, I deliberately had Nat tell you the baby was sick.”
“Because I wanted to see if you’d worry. If you’d care.”
As she spoke, tears began to fall.

“Matt, I don’t even know what’s wrong with me. After giving birth to Joseph, I’ve only felt
more and more insecure.”
Matthew walked over and sat on the edge of the bed, forcing down the pressure in his
chest.
“Grandma and Mom treat you like their own daughter. They take great care of you and
Joseph. How could you still not feel secure?”
“No!” Isabella suddenly grabbed his hand. “But what I care about more is your attitude
toward me, Matt.”
Matthew’s gaze swept indifferently over her pale fingers.
They were pretty, sure.
But they were nothing compared to that woman’s.
Even this touch-this texture-didn’t compare to how soft and comfortable that woman
felt.
Matthew froze for a beat, then immediately shoved away the comparison and the thoug
hts.
Why was he thinking about that woman again?
The one he truly liked was Isabella.
“Matt, I never wanted to break you and Charlie apart. I just want you not to neglect me.”
“I’m really afraid you’re only being good to me because I gave birth to Joseph, and you
have no choice.”
Matthew looked into those watery eyes filled with tears. He was still restless, but gave
in in the end.
“Alright. Stop crying.” His hand wiped away her tears.
“These past two days, I’ve been too busy, so I haven’t spent much time with you and the baby. From now on, I’ll pay more attention. I’ll try to make more time to be with you
two.”
“And don’t overthink it. It’s not because you gave birth to Joseph that I’m nice to you. It’s because you’re Isabella, because…”

Isabella didn’t hear what she truly wanted to hear, and disappointment flickered across
her face.
“What you said… is it all real?”
Matthew spoke gently. “Silly girl. When have I ever lied to you?”
Isabella threw herself into his arms.
“Matt, hearing you say that, I can finally relax.”
Matthew patted her back, soothing her. “No more crying. It’ll hurt your eyes.”
Isabella acted spoiled in his arms. “I don’t want to cry either. I can swallow any
grievance, I can take it… but I don’t know why-I just don’t want to take the grievances you give me, Matt.”
“Matt… did you spoil me too much?”
The next day, Charlotte stepped out of her room and saw Isabella sitting on the living
room sofa.
Seriously, this woman hadn’t been calm for even a day while recovering.
Charlotte had no intention of dealing with her.
“Charlie.”
Isabella stopped her.
Charlotte turned to look at her. “What is it?”
Isabella stood up, her face full of apology.
“I’m sorry. Joseph’s real condition-I hid it from Matt. Grandma and Mom don’t know, so…
don’t blame them.”
Charlotte felt sick to her stomach. She really wanted to rip off the ugly mask on
Isabella’s face.
But she couldn’t.

“Oh, right, Charlie.” Isabella called after her. “Did Matt tell you? My parents will be
coming over today. We’ll have dinner here tonight.”
